While visiting Pensacola in June we decided to take a drove out to Fort Pickens.
It’s a very nice drive along the coastline.

I highly recommend a visit if your in the area. Lots of history and the old fort is fascinating to explore.

Great for kids and adults. There is a visitor center and you can pick up a brochure and take the self guided tour. Well worth your time.

On our panhandle road trip, staying in Pensacola proper allowed us to roam the shops and restaurants of the older restored parts of the city after a day at the beach. In the morning we drove out to Fort Pickens and watched the Blue Angles practice overhead. Very exciting. On the way back we stopped at several beaches within the park. These were among the best beaches we saw along the entire panhandle. Clean, white sand and clear turquoise water, the beaches are nearly deserted. We hated to leave, but had to continue on. The next time we will allow several days for this area.

One note: Fort Pickens is a national park; and, if you are 62 or older, you can purchase a lifetime pass for $10.00 that gets you and everyone in your vehicle into any national park for free. Its a good deal.

The campground is the best I've seen in a long time. Everyone is very friendly. very family oriented. The fort was awesome and the beaches were beautiful. If you plan on tent camping, make sure you grab a spot with shade, some are full sun due to hurricane Ivan, a lot of trees have been damaged. In April there were no bugs and the breeze was constant. Great family fun!

We came in the off season. After the 'office' closed we probably had the place to ourselves. All we heard was the wind. There seem to be miles of tunnels in which to get lost and open areas that were once occupied by prisoners. When some weather started coming in the place got kinda spooky. Climb the ramparts where the cannons are and watch for lightning.

When you get to the gate to pay be sure and ask what time the next Ranger tour starts. Go on a Ranger tour, this makes the experience five times more enjoyable! As you enter the park you’ll drive past some of the battery locations. You’ll be tempted to stop, but keep driving to the visitor center and get all the self-guided information and brochures first. Hopefully you only have a little time to kill before the next Ranger tour. Some tips, bring binoculars for even better viewing when you go on top of the fort during your tour (Fort Barrancas across the bay, the old site of Fort McRee, etc). One tip I haven’t seen on any reviews for when you tour any of the historic forts along the gulf, bring a small flashlight. You won’t use it a lot, but there are times you can use it to view a dark passageway or dark room better. Kids will have a blast using it to explore some of these dark, mysterious areas. If you are going for casual sightseeing two or three hours is probably plenty of time. If you are like me and love history you could spend an entire day here easily, especially with all the battery sites to see. For just $4 you can get a simple, but nice book on Fort Pickens at the visitor center. This is a great investment if you love history and want to get even more out of your visit. If you want, check out my reviews on Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines.
