“A Hidden Tipperary Gem”
Reviewed 24 September 2013 via mobile

We stayed here for a wedding and the food and scenery were beautiful. The sheets on the bed were crisp-clean and the staff were very hospitable and friendly. A lovely getaway just minutes from Tipperary Town.

The main thing in the hotels favour is its location. There are wonderful views of the Glen of Aherlow and it is a great base for doing the large number of lovely walks in the area. But it's views and locations are the only 5 star aspect of this hotel. Our bedroom would be three stars, bathroom 2 stars, public areas we would rate 4 stars, dining staff 4 stars, bar staff 1 star.
We stayed for two nights B&B, dinner one night, and to be fair we did find it good value. The hotel could do with an upgrade, particularly the bathroom. It was quite shabby.
The staff we found a mixed bag. Our dining room staff were helpful, efficient, and very attentive and friendly. The reception staff were good. But the bar staff were terrible, long waits for service at the bar from the mostly young staff who seemed more interested in mingling and chatting with the locals - of whom there were many due to a barbecue and live band on the Sunday evening.
The breakfasts were good - lots of choice for a Continental breakfast and the offer of a Full Irish as well. The breakfast set us up nicely for the day. The dinner was nice - nothing special but still good.
If we were to visit Aherlow again we would probably stay here again - the location is perfect. It might be worth checking out the lodges as these looked new and had great views as well.

Room Tip: Ask for a mountain view room.

Firstly the view from the room we stayed in was facing a wall. The pathway between our window & the wall was covered in cigarette buts which was unsightly and disgusting. In the bathroom there was no soap to wash our hands (which is basic in even a budget hotel) and there was very little toilet paper. There were only 4 channels working on the TV.We were attending a wedding and the service in the bar was terrible. In the function room there was often only one person working. All the bar staff seemed to be teenagers and looked like they didnt have a clue as to what they were doing. And that included the main bar. I know of a couple of people who were overcharged. I think that this was done through sheer lack of experience All in all a very poor experience and was extremely poor value for money.

We got a good deal for 2 nights bed and breakfast and were looking forward to seeing this part of Tipperary but unfortunately we were let down by some factors. The fact that the hotel is old didn't bother us but basic things such as no towels in the room on arrival and a very small amount of toilet paper is just poor housekeeping. There were weddings on both days which will teach me to check before booking in future as the noise levels during the night were excessive but understandable. However I won't be booking another hotel with weddings on! Some of the glasses in the bar were stained with lipstick and the bar girl to her credit offered me a new drink but that level of hygiene again is unacceptable. W decided to treat ourselves and eat in the restaurant on the second night even though it was quite expensive for a la carte. Had the scallops which were very overcooked and there was shell in my crab ...extremely off putting for €12. The lamb was done three ways, one cold and another one so fatty it had hardly any meat and all for the pleasure of €24!!!! My partners sea bass was also so overcooked as to practically be rubber. The potatoes looked like they had been left out all day and were dried up and lumpy not unlike myself by the time the meal was over!! However the staff are friendly and the setting although isolated is beautiful which may be a factor in why the food is so poor as there is nowhere else to go.

Room Tip: We asked for a quiet room but it was anything but so not sure what tip to give!!

If I can re-iterate Enols review below. First impressions, no sign above reception entrance, old flooring at same, black/yellow tape to warn of step, finally, handle on door broken.........

We'd booked the afternoon tea, it should NOT have been served in bar on a bare wooden table, plus had to prompt very pleasant waitresses a number of times to get all thats listed. The afternoon tea itself was not truly as advertised, where was the clotted cream?!

Inside was pleasant enough but not up-dated recently, rooms clean and tidy - loose the 1980's CRT TV.....its not Craggy island! Little sound insulation in rooms, but quiet normally so good nights sleep had in decent bed.

Breakfast was acceptable, again, not ready in time, much prompting required to ensure all done and provided as expected.

All in all a pretty unmemorable experience, willing and nice staff let down by lack of training and poor leadership by those above them.

This was a voucher offer for two nights, if I had to pay in full they'd get a two points, as half price 3 points

We got a deal for 2 nights B&B at this hotel through one of the deal websites. From the photos on the deal website, and their own, it looked fabulous, so my expectations were high, but unfortunately not met.
The location and entrance of the hotel are beautiful, but the reception area is tired and in need of redecoration, as was our room and en suite. Cleanliness cannot be faulted, the common areas, rooms and bathroom were very clean, but generally, the whole place looked like it was a luxurious venue in the 70-80's, but not enough has been done to keep up the standard since then.
The staff seemed lovely, check in was professional and friendly, but the service level in the bar was poor; no-one came to us to offer menus or take our order.
The bar food was very well presented so you can see efforts are being made, but the quality of the food itself wasn't very good, my partner said his dish was tasteless and mine was swimming in too much sauce. The kitchen got our order wrong, which was taken off the bill when we paid, which was more than fair.
The sleep quality is good at night, but the next morning everything could be heard from surrounding rooms; hairdryers, people moving around their rooms, switches being turned on & off, doors opening & closing etc, which doesn't make for an enjoyable ly-in.
We didn't avail of breakfast because it finishes at 10am, a bit early in comparison to other hotels we stayed in.
The last straw for me was when I went to have a shower at about 11.30am and the water was cold, from the shower head and the taps. I resorted to boiling the little kettle for making tea & coffee to wash at the sink, because it would have been quicker than calling for maintenance to fix it.
This is probably a good base for exploring the area if you're not too fussy, but is not nearly as luxurious or plush as it looks from it's website.

Room Tip: The lodges are newer, so may be better?

Stayed in 3 bedroom lodge with my family on a 3 day break. It was very well equipped and the view from the upstairs window was amazing. It was really peaceful and we were able to bring our dog too and he loved the freedom and walks. The food in the hotel was very good with generous portions. The staff were very pleasant and we would definitely go back. My only complaint was the carpet in the hall was very grubby so it didn't make a good first impression when you walk in but we still had a lovely time.
