“our family reunion was a disaster”
Reviewed 1 January 2014

we held a family reunion there on christmas day, two of our family stayed overnight, we had a dinner booked, we were told a sitting at 2.30 pm was advailable, with a mulled wine reception @2.00pm, as we entered the reception area @ 1.50pm we were asked to pay up front, we were called to dinner downstairs at 2.40pm, no mulled wine reception, and no complaint from us, we were lead downstairs to the banqueting hall, where we were seated the windows were wet and dirty, with the carpet making a squishey sound when it was walked upon, which was rather full, the majority of the acents were either english or dublin, @ 4.00pm we asked could the six kids have some rools as they were hungery, also they were getting uneasy, at 4.00 our starter arrived, some had voul a vons, the pastry held some sauce with a poached egg on top, all the starters were cold, when the main course arrived it was also cold and not appitising, for tea there was no spoons on our table or the nearby ones, no table had salt or pepper, it was 5.40pm when we left the hall this will tell of how long it took for us to be served, i ordered a drink, the waiter returned and told me that i would have to pay then i would get served, the room aw very cold, the service was so slow, the food was cold and unappatising, ther was no wine on the table let alone a jug of juice, no christmas decorations to be seen only a solatiry tree on the bandstand, ocasionaly a transistor would blare out a christmas tune the cold was well cold, i had to wear a heavy cardigan to stay warm, a family friend was married there yesterday, everything was thankfully perfect, as members of the brides family presented themselves at the hotel a few days prior to the wedding to speak with management. .

Dear BillyMc49,
Thank you for taking the time to write your review and give us your honest opinion. We as a team are disappointed that your Christmas day reunion did not go as planned and we take all comments on board and act on them where possible.
Firstly, when it comes to Christmas day payment, it is required before the day and we were happy to make allowances for your group to pay on the day. In regards to the leak, unfortunately the storm that swept across the country was the cause of this, we did our very best to repair the damage caused but unfortunately this was out of our hands and could have happened anywhere and we did get it fixed immediately on St. Stephens once a maintenance man was available. We do apologize for this but unfortunately we are powerless to control freak issues that are caused by bad weather. If a guest had a complaint regarding food and we were made aware of this at your meal, we would have rectified it immediately, there is very little that we can do on this now only apologize. The Vol au Vent you mentioned was described on the menu as a ‘Bouchee of Wild Mushroom and Poached Egg, Parsley Hollandaise’ so the egg was mentioned in the description, maybe we should have chosen a more traditional option but because it was Christmas Day we felt things should be that bit more extravagant. In relation to the service issues we are genuinely very sorry, unfortunately as it was a restaurant sitting, some tables were very late arriving which lead to issues with other table times which we tried our very best to manage.
There was decorations going down to the ballroom, we also had a tree, garland and many lanterns and white winter trees and chair covers so it is unfair to say there wasn’t any decorations, it just wasn’t to your liking. It is also unfair to bring a wedding couple into your review and for the record this couple or their family did not present themselves to management no more than any couple who are planning their wedding day as they were always confident in the fact that their wedding would run smoothly.
BillyMc49, we are sorry that your Christmas Day reunion did not go as planned; we are treating your comments as a way forward for us to learn from issues that arose and which we will not repeat again.
Kind Regards
The Management Team

Myself and my partner booked one of the lodges on a Grab One deal, so got it for a fantastic price for the weekend. We are really into the outdoors and hill-walking and the Glen of Aherlow was perfect for this, with fabulous views from the lodge, especially the huge master bedroom balcony. There was an open fire, turf & firelighters supplied when we asked at reception, the kitchen was exceptional, everything you could possibly need. The decor was warm and welcoming, lovely wooden dining table and chairs and wooden floor. All of the three bedrooms were ensuite, with a bath in the ensuite of the master bedroom also. There was storage heating which you had to pay for, which cost us €13 on departure. I would highly recommend this for a get-away-from-it-all break, and I think I will try the actual hotel itself next time, which was very old-world with a massive open fire in the bar. Lovely.

We got a good offer on a night at Aherlow House Hotel including breakfast and dinner. We were warmly welcomed to this hotel by the very helpful and friendly staff on reception. Our room was nice and warm, quiet with a nice clean bathroom. The rooms are a little dated but everything you need is provided for a restful stay.

After a long drive to the hotel we had a light lunch in the bar. The fire was burning on a damp day which was very welcome. The hotel also has an amazing patio are with wonderful views weather permitting. They do nice soup and sandwich deals which we enjoyed.

Dinner was very good served in the restaurant. I tried the steak and my husband had the fish dish. Both very nice. Wine was fairly priced.

After a good nights sleep we enjoyed a really nice cooked breakfast served to the table. The menu states the names of the local producers for their Rashers, Sausages and Pudding. I could really taste the quality of the produce. I really enjoyed their cooked breakfast. On offer also was some fruit and juice etc.

Its a lovely place to get away from it all and go walking, I noticed lots of walking paths well sign posted. All in all we enjoyed our stay.

We stayed here with our parents so that they could mind our 3 month old while we attended a wedding nearby. It was really well setup for anyone travelling with kids - full kitchen, dishwasher, washing machine, loads of space and a cot.

The only negative I would have is that the decor and furniture are starting to look as if they have seen better days, they all seem to have taken some abuse over the years.

The view from the balcony of our bedroom was spectacular and the house was well heated despite the cold weather.

This really is a lovely remote spot to visit and I only wish we had had more time to explore the area.

Got very good value on a deal for two nights at this hotel .The location is quite remote and is ideal if you want to "disappear" for a few days .There are lots of walks in the area but we had bad weather which meant we were confined to the hotel which is small with only the bar area to chill out in .It got crowded at meal times which meant moving back to the room for peace and quiet. We eat in the bar rather than the restaurant as we found the restaurant a little unwelcoming and very dark in the evening .The bar food was reasonable and the young guy in the bar was excellent .Most of the staff were welcoming, the receptionists seem to disappear behind the desk and did not readily acknowledge you when you came in or went past.
Our room was on the first floor looking into the glen but partially obscured by trees growing directly outside the window.Make sure to ask for a glen facing room as the other rooms on the first floor face into a block wall with only some view of the forest. Second floor is better but there are no lifts so you would have problems with heavy cases
Rooms are a good size and comfortable but as with a few areas of this hotel they are in need of refurbishment, window blinds not working or missing, bathroom fittings tired and in need of replacement, carpets lifting at the seams, seats in the bar with shiny worn coverings and tables stained .
Having umbrellas available for guests who do want to go walk in the rain would be a good addition.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second floor facing the Glen rather than the first floor facing into the forest and the...
