I stayed here for two nights in January whilst I was working in Sawston. The first thing that occured to me on my arrival was that they could do with a bell or something in the pub to summon the proprietor. The reason for this thought was that when I arrived at approximatley 5.20pm the pub was open but I was the only person present in it for over twenty minutes. At least it gave me to study the menus, warm myself by the fire and read the papers. I had just descided that the only thing I could do was ring the place to see if anyone elsewhere in the building answerred when two members of staff arrived to open up the kitchen to start preparing the evening meals and were able to summon the proprietor from upstairs.
Hinxton is a lovely village, delightful to walk around and the pub is a fine old building which has been tastefully modernised inside in keeping with building. The bar area and restaurant are very comfortable and nicely furnished. The food is good and service very good.
The rooms are in a seperate block in the garden. They are nice enough but not significantly better than a Premier Inn room yet I paid nearly double the price. This, along with the cost of the food is where things start to look a bit disappointing.
According to their publicity material, the Red Lion has won several awards for their food and quality of their 'luxury' accommodation. My view is that whilst it is above average if, having read the publicity material, you are expecting a great welcome, luxurious accommodation and outstanding food you will be dissapointed. It is nice enough and I would stay here again but it is very expensive for what you get.

This is a typical English pub with real ales, log fires & friendly service. The rooms are very modern, clean & functional with king size beds and our 2 rooms had a connecting door which the staff opened for us & was very useful for our family of 4. The rooms are detached from the pub, located in the garden area at the rear which, in the summer. would be lovely. There is even a dovecote in the garden complete with a family of white doves & a few pigeons.
An evening meal can be had in the pub bar or the separate restuarant. The menu seems to be divided between traditional pub grub & nouveau cuisine (you know, artistic design on a plate). Our party had both types & found the new cuisine was delicious although the portions rather small. So if you have a big appetite, I suggest you go for the pub grub but if you want to try new tastes go for the other menu. I liked the idea that you had the choice.
Overall, a very enjoyable stay & I must say the staff were extremely friendly & helpful.

The Red Lion is a wonderful pub. The staff are friendly and attentive and the food is delicious. We were amazed when the chef cooked an additional dish for a vegetarian member of our party and then created two different gluten free suffles for the coeliacs to enjoy. Altogether the experience of dining at the Red Lion is unforgettable.

Sunday lunch here was very disappointing.
4 of us met here and our food did not come up to expectations.
2 roasts offered - the only option was 'rare' meat, one of our party opted for this and was presented with a plate of food suitable for a child, 2 small slices of meat, 3 tiny roast potatoes (overcooked and hard) and some scraps of vegetables. There was great debate from the waitress as to whether there would be a Yorkshire pudding available to accompany this (at 1.15p.m)! The fishcake was 90% salmon (perhaps because it is so cheap?) and appeared to have been made by a child - it looked messy. The other 2 main courses were fine (chicken & mushroom pie) but again the roast potatoes and vegetables lacked panache.
The fruit crumble offered as a desert was, again, similar to a child's portion, served in a creme brulee sized little pot, disappointing!
Bearing in mind that the meals in this pub/restaurant are well above other pub/restaurant prices, we shall not be back.

The hotel seems to be resting on its laurels as the food I had was distinctly average. The evening meal was not helped by an over reliance on balsamic reduction on everything and mushrooms which had not been properly washed and were gritty. Breakfast was grey undercooked bacon. Not a great success and the rooms were functional, clean and institutional. A nice enough pub for a beer but not mush space for drinking.

This pub does everything it says on the tin and more!
After a long drive and with a busy day to follwo i wanted a nice quite environment to catch up on the email traffic, then 'chill' ( as my younger friends say)!! I couldn't have picked a better location.
Spotless accomodation, great food, friendly and attentive staff. Stay there!!

Although the Red Lion wasn`t that close to our final destination - The Chilli Festival at Stevenage - we booked as we had enjoyed ourselves so much on our first visit. If anything our second visit was even better - lovely, warm welcome and fantastic room. The room had everything from a heating system you could override to 'proper' coffee. And the food - exciting, tasty, memorable. They do indeed go that extra mile.

Room Tip: They are all excellent.
