“A home away from home”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

This is a charming little hotel by the beautiful Fjærland fjord, one of the arms of the Sognefjord.

The owner Bård is enthusiastic and welcoming, and gathers the guests interested before dinner for a little history lesson about Fjærland. He has created his own beer, which is wonderful to enjoy while sitting at the terrace overlooking the fjord, watching porpoises swimming by, if you are lucky. The food is very good value for money, with a focus on local ingredients, it is proper home cooked food.

The walls in our room were covered with bookshelves, with a nice mix of literature. We loved the room, it was not large, but charming and a good place to sleep.

I really recommend this place.

Room Tip: The library room, if you need a twin room, and do not have too much or very large luggage.

In truth this hotel isn't up to much. The rooms are small with spartan furnishings. The dining room and lounge are equally austere, being filled with the kind if furniture you'd expect to see in a second hand store - though there is a piano and a 1970s music centre along with some classic vinyl from the same era (including lots of Pink Floyd) to help you while away the dark winter evenings. But at the end of the day, Fjaerland is amazingly beautiful and well worth a visit. And there are only two places to stay and I think this may well be the best option. I'm sure the Hotel Mundal has nicer rooms and grander communal areas. I'm sure it has a more extenive breakfast buffet. But it doesn't have the lovely deck overlooking the fjord that the Fjordstue has. And what a spot it is. Totally awesome. Forget booking a room with fjord view as I'll bet you won't use it. Like us I'm sure all your down time will be spent on the deck soaking up the views. Oh and the friendly owner makes his own beer too. And it's pretty good, though Kr 125 for a 750ml bottle means it isn't cheap but hey this is Norway after all! Three stars for the hotel. Five for the location.

We were only able to stay one night here - we found it comfortable and peaceful. There are splendid views of the fjord and glacier and Bard the proprietor is very welcoming and a mine of information. There is no TV or WiFi (hooray!) but there's a fine selection of books and vinyl records (including most of the Pink Floyd albums!). The rooms are simply furnished but perfectly comfortable and spotlessly clean. We had a very enjoyable evening meal (washed down with a bottle of Bard's excellent beer) and the breakfast was fine. We would certainly go back for a longer stay if we had the chance.

We were on our slow way to Trondheim right at the beginning of the tourist season and this hotel was in the right place and open - and we were really pleased we chose it. True enough, the rooms are not 2013 "international" standard, but somehow the recent renovations seem to have brought them to "new" technical standard for their last major upgrade, and everything was neat, clean, tasteful and working. We slept well in a really comfortable bed and awoke to fantastic views both up and down the fjord. Good choice for breakfast, including local produce.

The lounge also offers great views up, across and down the fjord. Again, it's not modern - but it is "updated to its period", comfortable, clean and interesting. A definite bias to those who can remember back a few decades - or are open minded enough to be interested in how things were. Naturally enough, the close proximity to the "book town" has ensured a wide range of books of all kinds to browse.

We were lucky to be able to spend a lot of time talking to the owner, Bård, who was a mine of information and stories. Amongst several other specialities Bård has started brewing his own beer, which I would absolutely recommend. The addition of (hand picked!) juniper gives a slight taste which is really nice. A beer which you can almost drink like a wine.

To the reviewer that thought the curtains were too thin I can only say "read the instructions" - there were lightproof roller blinds behind the decorative curtains.

If we ever stay in Fjærland again it will certainly be here.

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at this family-run hotel. We had thought to only stay a night but we ended up staying three nights.

The surroundings are beautiful, and there are mountains, glaciers and cute villages to explore in the vicinity. We had a small room on the top floor with cozy built-in beds. The beds weren't the most comfortable and the woom was pretty basic but the overall atmosphere of the hotel compensated for that. As one reviewer pointed out, those of you who love big rooms, king size beds and all possible comforts - this is not the place for you. If you are like us and you value personal contact, familiarity, and a home-away-from-home feeling, you have come to the right place. The common areas have wifi and are furnished in a charmingly eclectic way. We were lucky with the weather and could relax with a drink after strenuous hikes on the fjord-side deck.

While Fjaerland has two hotels (a lot for such a tiny place), we decided to eat 'at home' every night. Our hosts were very accomodating (I'm a vegetarian and that was no issue) and the food was good.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to those of you who appreciate a personal and friendly place.

The views of the Fjord and mountains from the rooms and common areas is amazing. The hotel is not to big, more like a bed and breakfast, very cozy. Room was very clean and comfortable (corner room with views to the Fjord), no WiFi on the rooms only on common areas (I believe this is intentional, as the owner probably wants you to come down and enjoy the hotel from all areas and share some time with your fellow travelers). The owner is very friendly and will welcome you warmly. Breakfast was OK, with few items but all good. The best part was the freshly-baked bread (use the big cups for tea and the small cups for coffee!)
Definitively a place to relax and recharge after a visit to one of the glaciers or hiking in the area.

Room Tip: The corner room had great views!
