My stay at this wonderful B&B was extremely pleasant and will not soon be forgotten. Walter and Erwin quickly made me feel right at home in their lovely abode, and I am very grateful to them for their hospitality and kindness. An excellent choice if you are looking for accommodation in the Appenzell region.
Rooms featured modern yet cozy décor, bed and linens were comfortable, and the entire establishment was immaculate. Bathroom and shower were down a short set of stairs from my room. Views from either side of the house are quite lovely, with soft green hills dotted with farmhouses undulating in all directions. There is also a very nice patio, perfect for relaxing after a long hike, and a garden house with a massive screen, catering to the soccer viewing needs of locals and tourists alike.
Erwin and Walter also run a small restaurant, with Hörnli (pasta) being the specialty. I had an incredibly tasty salad, followed by pasta in a fig sauce, which was uniquely sweet, but very delicious (there are also more traditional pasta options). The restaurant itself was delightful, and given the ambiance and excellent food, is understandably quite popular with the locals. After the sun went down, a number of candles were lit, and guests were treated to a brief (lasting a minute or so) but lovely Alphorn concert. It was an extremely pleasant way to pass an evening.
Breakfast featured an array of fresh breads, jams, juice, cheese, salami, and coffee—substantial and delicious.
I should also mention that Erwin and Walter were kind enough to pick me up in the center of Trogen (after my hike from Stein that morning) and bring me to the guesthouse, and they even washed a couple of clothing items for me that had suffered during the hike. They were also happy to provide recommendations and directions for hiking.
Easy-going and friendly hosts, stylish and cozy rooms, expertly crafted meals, and the beautiful Appenzell scenery all made for a very memorable stay. Highly recommended.
