“Great location and comfortable rooms”
Reviewed 21 July 2014

I stayed at this hotel for one night on Saturday 19th July '14. Easy parking and made very welcome by the friendly staff. Both checking in and out staff on hand to assist. 2nd floor room very comfortable and quiet so I slept very well. Everything like new with comfy bed and spotless bathroom. Big plasma tv but didnt make much use of this as was attending a local event. Tea/coffee provided in room and was free wifi. Highly recommended and good value.

First impressions were good , but it seems as if the duty receptionist is 'the general assistant' , responsible for multi tasking at breakfast , and bar duty in the afternoon . Great if the place is quiet ( and it was) , but not so good if clients are secondary to the owners relaxed working hours .
It must be said that the rooms are great , we had a first floor bedroom that was spot on for amenities and comfort ( one comment could be the bathroom shower screen swung open allowing water onto the floor) but it was great value with dinner included on the first night of two stayed. The attic rooms seemed to have very low beams .
The restaurant is beautifully converted with several eating areas , and an open plan kitchen with a separate pizza kitchen for peak nights ; the menu was well balanced and the service was attentive and friendly - for the quality it deserved to have been busier .
Breakfast was a let - down ; the food was moderate , and the two staff seemed to be trying to cook , serve , and check guests out .
We had to search for cutlery and crockery to change our table from a 2 to a 4 ( we were a party of 4 so this should have been predicted) , and the request for Kippers on day 1 was met with' the manager hasn't bought any ' . We suggested to the waitress that we would like Kippers for day 2 and that this supply issue could be easily overcome within 24 hours? Regrettably this was not to be , and it seemed as if no-one communicated or bothered to ensure the full menu was available .
Overall I think we would return , but it is the small things that make the difference .

Room Tip: attic rooms had very low beams

We booked the Royal Oak as our base for a retirement do at Chester races mainly because it was the only hotel remaining, however, it turned out to be a fortunate yet fantastic choice. We arrived just before midday and greeted by the hotel manager who made our party of 5 feel most welcome. We had an excellent 2 course lunch for under £10. The rooms were very clean and spacious with all the facilities you'd expect but presented extremely well. Having got suited and booted we weren't able to book a taxi into the races to meet the rest of our party in time. No pun intended but the manager certainly went the extra mile by driving us there. Needless to say we had a great day out and was again greeted by friendly understanding staff as we nursed our sore heads in the morning. You dont find these kind of hotels very often. Alright it's tucked away 7 miles out of Chester, but if its a clean friendly hotel to use as a base to see Cheshire and North Wales at a reasonable price you'll struggle to find anywhere better. Many thanks for having us

We booked this as a one night get away, then off to do some fly fishing near Marton Heath.

Upon our arrival we had to wait a little longer than expected at the reception to be booked in. The manager looked a little surprised, then in my opinion slightly annoyed when I asked to see the room first, as we always do at hotels we visit.
Our way of thinking is; why pay for something you have never seen? The Hotel might be rated highly, but we have been had over with that one before, and it's for us to decide. The room was £89.00, which was booked via the hotel although it was showing the same price on booking.com.

Anyhow, I (male) checked the room ( The Ashton Room 2nd floor) which was clean and immaculate, though I think I had a touch of tunnel vision. It was only when we both went up to see the room it was pointed out to me by (fem) that the beams in the room were low, so a lot of Ducking a Diving was done, especially on the right hand side of the bed. However it was spotless with a nice spacious shower area. There is also no lifts In the hotel if you are unable to get up and down stairs easily.

We decided to eat in the hotel and got a table quite quickly, and the food was excellent, although slightly pricey, as was the wine, but the service was prompt and very friendly.

After we ate we stayed in the hotel bar and had drinks for the rest of the night on the chairs near the TV, where we also had cheese and Biscuits. Although if the restaurant is full you will find there isn't a lot of places to just have a drink, unless like in our case we were found a place in the a booth which wasn't being used, or you can use the chairs near the TV if they are free, which we did when they did became free.

The bed was a little to firm for our liking, but the sheets ect were crisp and clean and the TV worked. There was also a kettle in the room

The breakfast was Ok, a tad disappointing, we have had better, sorry to say.
The beans were a little tasteless, and the black pudding was dry, and the bacon over cooked, we were given two slices of toast between us, And we were never asked if we wanted any more.

The hotel was an ends to a mean for us, and was a pleasant stay. We probably won't go back there, for no other reason than it's in the middle of nowhere 7 miles ish away from Chester, but that's not the hotels fault, lol.

There are a few reviews on here about poor breakfast, which surprises me, given the restaurants high quality food and service. We would have liked to give the hotel a Good, which is between average and very good.

Room Tip: We were in Ashton Room. Beware of the beams

We stopped here for one night whilst in the area and were highly pleased with our choice. Very friendly staff, lovely food on the evening( and great beer garden!), comfortable room, and decent breakfast choices. Easy to find and car parking available. Pleasant weekend away.

Stayed for one night in a standard room. Rooms were very nice and the staff were lovely. Glad we made reservations for dinner as it got very busy in the evening. Food was great, breakfast could have been better but overall it was a nice getaway. Was ideally located between Chester and Delemere forest making it a nice weekend stop over. Would definitely go back.

We stayed three nights over the late May Bank Holiday - we were attending the Chester Folk Festival in the village. Our room was excellent (the ensuite had both a bath and a separate, large shower cubicle). Plenty of choice for breakfast; kippers were VG. Good evening menu - they have a proper pizza oven, too. Staff friendly and professional.
