We had a meal on quite a busy Sunday evening. All staff were friendly and welcoming...the food was excellent....we both had fish and would totally recommend eating here. We particularly liked how a bottle of tap water came to the table immediately without having to ask or being offered expensive mineral water!

Hesitated to write this: we stayed last summer for one night and after a good night's sleep, nice room, etc. we had a disastrous breakfast. Had to wait over an hour before we got anything to eat. The place was horribly understaffed, and I felt really sorry for the poor waitress who got the brunt of it because clearly it wasn't her fault. At this room price the management should just pay for more staff - it's a really simple solution. BUT - the most disappointing thing was that I wrote a careful review directly to the management, rather than putting something up first on TripAdvisor, and never heard a peep back from them. Clearly they weren't at all concerned that we left frustrated, annoyed and feeling that this was vastly over-priced for what it is.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the estuary are surprisingly noisy in the morning as it's on quite a busy road...

We are mystified by this review. The main complaint (apart from the breakfast delay on a very busy Sunday morning for which we apologise) is that we failed to respond to an earlier ‘review’ dated August 4th 2013. Yet that review was largely positive and posted on a third party site (a booking engine) rather than directly to us. We respond promptly to any comment sent to us directly, but we feel no obligation to reply to those posted on third party sites (including those on TA). It is also beyond us why this customer would produce a review six months after the first that partly contradicts the original! Here is the first review:
‘ Our room was lovely, clean, well decorated, comfortable with a really pretty view of the river and a great king-sized bed. The service was generally very willing and helpful and the facilities were good. Easy parking. At his request my husband was served his dinner in double quick time because he had an appointment elsewhere. However there was not enough staff on at breakfast to cover the number of guests - the waitress was great but horribly overloaded. It might have helped if we could have ordered and booked a time for breakfast the night before? Not sure. As it was, we waited 55 minutes for our food. The food was very good when it came but by that time I was stressed. A shame to spoil what was otherwise an excellent stay, and a false economy on the part of the management not to provide enough staff, given that this is quite a highly-priced b&b in the area. ' We leave it to TA readers to decide whether these comments invite a response on our part.

Love this restaurant, it ticks every box and never fails to impress. The food, wine list, staff and prices are fantastic. Can't wait to go again. Seared prawns to start then Sutton Hoo chicken was simply fantasic.

I had eaten in the restaurant before which is a little cramped but the food is truly excellent. This trip was to celebrate a friends birthday so a crowd of us had a lovely meal and stayed the night. We had a premier room which had a view over the water. The room was very pleasantly decorated and was clean and well appointed. We were shown to our room and shown how to use the television, all about the welcome tray etc which was a nice touch. My only slight (and it is minor) negatives would be that there was a full length mirror and the mirror in the bathroom steamed up and with no fan it took a while to demist.

Our evening meal was delicious as was breakfast. The staff were very pleasant, helpful and I felt went the extra mile to make us all have a very enjoyable evening and stay. I would highly recommend this hotel and restaurant for a relaxing weekend or even for business as it has free wifi.

The village of Mistley is very charming and this gastropub-with-rooms fits right in. My parents and I stayed for 3 nights over the Xmas period. Although they weren’t serving food for much of that time, the few meals we had there were very good. My only complaint would be that the bowls at breakfast were far too small to fit more than about 3 cornflakes in them. They also permit dogs in the bar which may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Also, as this is a pub, there is no sitting room other than the bar so you may be confined to your room if not out and about. The staff were very friendly and helpful and were particularly kind about letting me use their fridge to put some food in (to cover the meals they weren’t providing).
We stayed in Rooms 1 and 7. Both were clean and of a decent size with large bathrooms (with REN toiletries). There is also a nice tea and coffee tray in each room. It’s worth noting that an estuary view is never going to be amazing as the large building opposite is between the Mistley Thorn and the Quay.
We found Mistley Thorn on i-escape and I’m not sure it’s quite up to their usual standard. I say this primarily because it doesn’t feel like the management have actually stayed in each of the rooms with full suitcases, for a couple of days etc. There are about 5 hangers in the wardrobes and virtually nowhere else to put clothes; no chests of drawers or shelves, so my parents had to live out of a suitcase for 3 days, which you don’t expect at these prices. Room 7 is in the eaves and the floor is very uneven (it’s a lovely old building) so it won’t be suitable for everyone. Also because the bedside table was on uneven floor several things like glasses of water kept sliding off.

Excellent places to eat within a 20 minute drive include The Pier, Harwich and Le Talbooth, Dedham. There’s also a lovely 20 minute stroll into Manningtree.

Needed to stay here at very short notice, very friendly, comfortable, great service and food. Welcoming and warm, kept right on the service all the time and Dannielle was a star. When we left two items behind, she posted them back straight away. Interesting little village, and as a result its a hotel to be measured against.

Room Tip: Only saw one room, but Hotel throughout was a good standard. Nice bar, restraunt and no reason not t...

We go have been to the Thorn on numerous occasions to eat and generally love the food and ambience of the place. However, our visit with 4 other friends on Saturday was marred by the terrible service. After being seated we had to wait over 10 minutes for a drinks order to be taken. It was another 25 minutes before we were offered a menu to look at. Food when it arrived was very good, although a couple of the starters were barely warm. When this was mentioned to the waitress, the response was it is very busy. At the end of the evening when we had the bill, we patiently waited for 15 minutes for someone to take the money before having to ask a waitress to take the payment. On one final note, we noticed that in general visitors were not given a warm greeting or indeed a goodbye by anyone in the waiting team. In fact everyone leaving the restaurant did so without being acknowledged, or a goodbye & thanks for visiting said to them. We will visit again but it is these little touches that can make all the difference to an evening out.
