Olympic Lights Bed and Breakfast
Reviewed 9 July 2009

My girlfriend and I recently had the pleasure of staying at Olympic Lights. We stayed in the Ra Room for the first night and the Heart Room the following night. Both were excellent. We were looking for someplace peaceful outside of downtown Friday Harbor and Olympic Lights certainly fit the bill. Set in the countryside, with amazing mountain and ocean views from the kitchen and backyard, it proved to be such a relaxing atmosphere. Christian and Lea's hospitality far surpassed our expectations. They served a lovely breakfast each morning, complimented by great conversations with the other guests, a few of whom had stayed there a number of times. Christian was eager to provide suggestions for dining, hiking, and sightseeing and helpful in avoiding tourist traps. We enjoyed whale watching from Lime Kiln Park, visits to the local vineyard, trips to American Camp, Roche Harbor, and the Lavender Farm. We even had the pleasure of watching the town celebrate its 100th year at the 4th of July Parade, topped off with a performance by Christian and Lea's Marimba Band. It was easy to see why they've been able to run a successful B&B for the last 23 years. We will certainly be back at some point.

I finally had a moment to write to say we thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Christian and Lea. She makes wonderful breakfasts and catered to our food allergy, including making special options for us. Christian was a great host and provided perfect directions, multiple maps, and excellent tips for what to do and where to eat. I would highly recommend this place for anyone going to the San Juan islands or anywhere near Seattle for that matter!

This was our second stay at Olympic Lights and it won't be our last. When we stay on San Juan Island, there is no other place we would rather stay. The large yellow farmhouse reminds me very much of my grandmother's house when I was a kid, from the big porch to the big country kitchen to the grounds bursting with flowers, birds, garden art, and places to rest. Our room, the Garden Room, is the one we choose to stay in because it is on the first floor right off the kitchen and the easiest to access. It is clean and comfortable. Olympic Lights is a place where you can kick back and relax, sit for a spell on the porch and read or watch the birds flit in and among the trees and bird feeders, or just close your eyes and rest. Breakfasts are eaten around a large table right in the kitchen. Breakfasts are very good and filling, from a fruit smoothie and dish of fresh fruit to an egg dish and baked goods. Lea's cornmeal biscuits are delicious! We never left hungry.

Lea and Christian are the hosts and are two of the nicest, warmest people imaginable. Half the fun of staying at the inn is having the opportunity to visit with them. They are very knowledgeable about the island and can direct you to good restaurants, shops, and points of interest around the island. Lea recommended The Place for dinner one night and it turned out to be our favorite meal of the trip. She also directed us to a hike up Mt. Young at English Camp which culminated in breathtaking views of the islands and the Sound. We would never have known about that hike otherwise. I happened to take a picture of an owl perched on a traffic sign on the island, and when I showed it to Lea, she immediately grabbed several bird guides from her parlor bookshelves in an effort to identify the owl (it was a barred owl). This is typical of the interest Lea and Christian show in their guests.

Olympic Lights is located off of Cattle Point Road, which is a good location for us, as we like to spend a lot of time at American Camp and South Beach just down the road where we spend our time hiking, beachcombing, and photographing animals--foxes, rabbits, deer, eagles, otters all abound in this area.

We would highly recommend Olympic Lights to anyone seeking a quiet, cozy, beautiful retreat on one of the northwest's most beautiful islands. You can't go wrong.

A first clue to the stay that awaits you is the single-track gravel lane and canopied tunnel of trees you turn right into from Cattlepoint Road just before American Camp. The canopy gives way to open sky, scattered housing and--off in the distance--a yellow clapboard farm house. Once through the gate you discover red outbuildings, darting finches and hummingbirds, and beautiful gardens tucked among trees or facing the glorious Olympic Peninsula. Rooms are bright and airy; views are breathtaking; beds have crisp sheets and cosy comforters; and bouquets of flowers perfume the air. Breakfasts are served with just laid eggs and fresh baked pastries and juice smoothies. Add to the mix hosts Lea and Christian--some of the kindest people I have ever met--and you'll find yourself planning your next trip back before this one ends.

My husband and I stumbled upon this GEM of a b and b while looking for a place to stay on San Juan for our first trip to the islands, and boy did we luck out. We can hardly wait for breakfast every morning, what with the fresh eggs from the resident hens or the scones and muffins that are made fresh daily. Christian and Leah are wonderful hosts, you feel like you are staying with friends/parents when with them. This is a must vacation for us every year and will only stay with Olympic Lights, go and stay for yourself you will be glad that you did. You will feel rejuvenated and never want to leave.

This was our tenth visit to Olympic Lights. Why do we keep coming back? Maybe it is the beautiful setting in an historic farmhouse amidst gardens and fields with views of distant mountains. Maybe it is the comfortable rooms that help us to get a good night's sleep. Maybe it is the comfortable living room with a fire in winter. Maybe it is the warm welcome from the hosts, who offer every guest helpful advice about what to see on this interesting island. Maybe it is the South Beach, one of the Northwest's best, that is a five-minute drive, or twenty-minute walk, away. Maybe it is the delicious breakfasts made from fresh ingredients -- the eggs are from a henhouse on the property. Maybe it is all of these, which taken together, make for some of the happiest times in our lives.

We spent three weekends at the Olympic Lights between June and October of this year. After our first visit we knew that we had to be back soon!

Christian and Leah have turned an old farmhouse into a magical place of beauty, peace and serenity. The Olympic Lights is located near the bluffs and one evening we could hear orcas breath in the waters nearby when we came back from dinner.

The rooms are cozy, very clean and furnished with love for detail. Christian and Leah are such wonderful hosts and the breakfast simply amazig: Leah’s variations of egg dishes with home-baked scones, accompanied by Christian’s creative compositions of freshly squeezed fruit juices.

We will definitely be back!!!
