“Great View, Terribly Expensive”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 August 2006

The Esperanza Restaurant and Inn sits perched atop a hill overlooking the rural outpost of Bluff Point on the western branch of Keuka Lake. This Greek revival mansion has seen many reincarnations over the course of its 168 year history, serving as everything from a winery to an orphanage and passing through too many different private owners to count. By the time I was a kid in the 1970’s, the mansion was abandoned and had fallen into serious disrepair. Looming atop a steep driveway, the old building had the scary aura of a haunted house, and had become a late night party hangout for local teens, who broke into the building and scrawled graffiti all over the crumbling walls. Local gossip says that famous Brazilian artist Romero Britto actually submitted the highest offer for the estate when it went up for sale a few years back, but the eccentric painter and sculptor lost out to more influential Rochester developer David Wegman. Wegman built a cheap looking new motel in the mansion parking lot, which stands markedly apart from the stunning architecture of the original mansion. I toured the mansion after it first re-opened several years back, and was not impressed by the ersatz décor. You picked up a candlestick and saw the fifty-cent “Big Lots” price sticker still on the bottom. Cheap pictures on the walls looked like they came from the same Big Lots bargain bin.

My husband and I ate dinner at the Esperanza restaurant on a Friday night in August. We opted to eat in the fine dining section, and were immediately seated at a corner table upon our arrival. The room featured a fireplace and a hutch full of china tea cups. Deep casement windows alongside our table overlooked the valley and lake below. I ordered a glass of local wine and we were swiftly presented with a basket of warm rolls accompanied by softened butter. For starters, I ordered the basil, tomato and mozzarella salad. The menu boasted that this salad contained vine-ripened tomatoes. Since August is the month of ripe tomatoes - especially in this rural area bursting with Mennonite farm stands – I expected nothing less. To my disappointment, thin, off-pink slices of tomato arrived, looking like something that might accompany a fast food hamburger. The dish was topped off by rubbery mozzarella cheese served cold and drizzled with a grainy mustard seed dressing. My husband made a better choice with a crock of silky lobster shrimp bisque. Sadly, throughout the meal we were tormented by fruit flies. Our constant swatting at these little pests presented a serious distraction to our enjoyment of the meal. Organic veal arrived with spinach like growing moss piled atop two medallions of meat. For the accompanying presentation, matchstick-thin potato sticks were piled over braised leeks and potatoes that swam in a wine reduction sauce of pan juices. The crusty chunks of veal were soft and delicious. Too full for desert, I ordered coffee, which was served in a small white ceramic cup and tasted very much like instant. Dinner for two, with two glasses of wine came to $109. At these prices, no wonder the only locals I saw were the waitresses. We couldn’t leave without walking out onto the veranda and taking in the spectacular view of the western branch of Keuka Lake. This is the one thing the Esperanza offers which no one else can: the most breath-taking view you will find anywhere in the Finger Lakes.

I stayed here last week. I agree with some of the previous ratings -- the rooms are so-so, at least in the "cottages" which are basically a motel separate from the mansion. Biggest problem I had was the room was musty smelling and the patio door leading to the parking lot didn't seem to afford much privacy. They definitely need better curtains so you don't feel as though you are sleeping with the cars.

The restaurant was OK, but if you have dietary restrictions or want something a bit different, you probably won't get it. The kitchen was not very accommodating.

The biggest issue was that they must have a septic tank problem. The grounds are breathtaking, but when the wind blows, whew! You can even smell it on the dining patio. A real ambiance killer.

Pricy, accommodations aren't that great. Food was just OK. You could certainly get better elsewhere, but you can't beat the view.

Don't stay here! We were visiting as a gift from a friend of my husband's for our 25th anniversary, and the front desk knew all about it.

We had an Inn room #120, not in the Mansion, and it was perhaps the worst room we ever had. It was advertised as "lake view" but we had a ground floor room which had a parking lot view. The lake is some distance away, and not visible from the very small front patio. You enter thru the small patio the width of a park bench, (and that is all that separates you from the parking lot), thru a french door. The door didnt even have sheers over it, so you have absolutely NO privacy. You feel as though you are sitting in the middle of the parking lot. Most rooms elsewhere are configured with an entrance door and the patio doors at the opposite end, but not here.

The room also had a connecting door to the next room which didnt lock, and didnt even latch! When I tried to get our door to stay shut, the door on the opposite side popped right open! We tried to block it with a chair, but it was no use. The patio front door does not have an inside latch either, but it did lock from the outside. The room also smelled musty and somewhat like smoke.

The furnishings consisted of a king bed, a very small (and dirty) loveseat which didnt serve any purpose, a small TV, a nightstand, and a cheap round table with one chair. There were no environmental controls. It did have a window-unit a/c mounted thru one wall.

The walls are paper thin. Next door, someone's cell phone kept ringing incessantly (and I mean that the phone was ringing pretty much continuously) and I kept checking to be sure it wasn't our phone, thats how loud it sounded in our room.

After about 30 minutes of trying to decide if we should stay, my husband and I checked out. We felt unsafe as the door wouldnt latch, and overall the room felt cheap and unclean (big dirt marks on the walls, no closet doors, etc.).

Maybe the mansion rooms are nicer, but I would steer clear of the Inn! Stay at Glenora instead.

We would like to thank Kathy Marchanese and all the staff at Esperanza for a terrific job on our daughter's wedding May 27.

After over a year of planning the day was spectacular. You kept telling us that you could do almost anything making us feel this was your only event for the month. Your attention to detail made the reception flawless.

I teach professional project management and Kathy could be a case study in how to successfully manage a project. She knows how to plan, pay attention to details, and then make execution look easy while delighting the customer.

Several of our guests commented about how special the reception was, including a person who had his own catering business for several years.

A sincere thank you again to all the staff who were most responsive to any request or offer to provide that extra help.

My husband Bob and I can't thank the staff at The Esperanza Mansion enough. Kathy, Norm and Theresa and their staffs did an outstanding job for our Daughter Maria's and new Son Inl Law Andrew's wedding, this past weekend, Mother's Day, Saturday, May 13th. The facility is absolutely gorgeous, the grounds impeccable, the service outstanding...we were on a Magical Carpet ride all weekend long...all of our families and friends had the time of their lives...
it was an experience that we will never forget.
The food was exceptional - Cook Carlos and his staff outdid themselves.
We give the Esperanza a million A+'s.....Thank you, Kathy for always being there for any of my questions...

After researching and visiting many restaurants in Central New York we paid a visit to the Esperanza Mansion in Bluff Point New York. As we drove up the driveway we had no idea what to expect. We had seen the beautiful pictures on their web site and as we all know pictures are but part of the story. We entered the mansion by way of the parking lot and we noticed stately antique Rolls Royce parked in the back and thought wow this is neat .

We were immediately greeted by a smiling young woman whose beaming face made us feel very welcome. We then met the Events manager Kathy. She showed us around and explained the service and showed us all our options in a very business like manner providing us with clear concise options. This made the decision and easy one based on what we heard and what we tasted we had found the place.

The reception went off like clockwork the staff was wonderful going beyond the call to duty. The food was served quickly and without a notice all were served in what seemed like no time at all. The meals were as first class as the service. All of this combines with a breath taking setting which made this even the wedding by which all future weddings will be judged by 190 who attended.

I am not an easy person to impress but all at The Esperanza Mansion have not only impressed my wife and me but all of the guests who attend my daughters wedding.
We do plan in the future to return to the comfort and the hospitality of the Esperanza Mansion. Heck we need to, we felt like we had been treated more l there like friends than clients.

This is a world class facility with a world class chef I would heartily recommend it to all who choose to venture to this beautiful corner of the world
