This is a great base on the isla. Simone and Robert are excellent hosts and go out of their way to help. For example, they helped us arrange a tour of the volcano, rent motorcycles for exploring, lined up a cab for the mainland (we were headed to San Juan del Sur next) and made sure we knew the ferry times. Both speak English and can recommend good, reliable guides.

The location is great -- just a few hundred feet up the road from the ferry landing. There are several restaurants and bars within blocks. Also, Simone makes some awesome chocolate cake and great banana smoothies. Breakfasts are also good (and she´ll get up early to make you breakfast before you take off on the volcano climb).

The rooms are large, airy and very white. Simone said she was still working on decorations. I see a lot of potential. Take a look at the floors, though. Spotless!

The person who mentioned the heat was correct. Just prepare yourself for some warm nights -- not unlike many other places in Nicaragua. The hot showers were wonderful after having taken so many cold showers. We really don´t like to feel isolated (seems like you could feel that way at many of the other hotels on the island as the roads are so bad and cabs so expensive), so the American Hotel was great for us!

We were about to leave Omotepe after an awful night at Villa Paraiso and only called here whilst waiting for the feey because we saw a sign for 'chocolate cake'. Decided to give Omotepe another go as owners were so helpful (helped us hire cycles, horses, suggested destinations), rooms super spotless and constant piping hot water. We had a spacious 2 double bed room for oursleves and 2 teenage kids. it doesn't look much from the outside, but persevere. Also the Italian owner is a fantiastic cook - as vegetararians we really enjoyed her lunches.

We had a fantastic time staying at this hotel. Simone and Robert run all aspects of the hotel and are excellent hosts. The hotel is very clean and comfortable and the food is great. In addition to having a fantastic time we now consider Simone and Robert friends. Check out the link below to see my full review and video of the room and interview with the owner Simone

We chose this hostel based on the great trip advisor reviews! I admit that Simone and her husband were great hosts, helping with food, and answering of questions on the island, their service could not have been better and we appreciated this!!! However, given the much higher price compared to other hostels in the region, were not thrilled with the room quality (just one big white room), the price, and also the fact that even with a fan in the room, the rooms were really hot when sleeping. We barely slept the 3 nights there given the hotness of the room (despite that the outside was much cooler than the stuffy room). Also beware that roosters in the area will keep you up all night!

We stayed at The American Cafe & Hotel in Nov and had a very nice experience. The owners, Bob & Simone, are hospitable and knowledgable. The rooms were simple, clean, and came with much appreciated hot water. Simone is a great cook and even packed us sack lunches for hiking. The price is a bit higher than some other local establishments but we had a great experience and would highly recommend The American Cafe over the others.
