“Beautiful Location, Overpriced”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2014

We just returned from a few nights at San Juan de la Isla. While the grounds are lovely, and the staff was friendly, we found all aspects of the hotel to be overpriced. Also note that the hotel is very isolated--if you want to see Ometepe, make sure you rent a motor bike or arrange for some other form of transportation. Otherwise, you will be eating the hotel's food, which was expensive and not that great (there are no other restaurants nearby), and paying very high fees for excursions.

We loved everything about it. The staff was amazing. It all started with the lovely Daphne who answered every ridiculous question I threw at her before our arrival. She was always so quick to answer and really got me excited about our adventure to Ometepe. And her hospitality didn't stop there. I received a great welcome from her on arrival and she continued to check on us throughout our stay. Love that girl! We did opt for the cabin and it was worth every penny. Adorable accommodations right on the beach with the most amazing breeze that never seemed to cease. The cabin was exceptionally clean, well designed and comfortable. You really couldn't ask for a better bathroom. We lived on our spacious balcony overlooking the lake. Complete heaven. It is a bit of a trek from the main road but we had an amazing time walking or biking the beach into the next town for lunch every day. We had 4 amazing days at the San Juan de la isla and it wasn't enough. Thanks to Douglas for driving us around, Juan for being an excellent server of Ernesto's delicious food and to Karolina for being there when we needed her. I'm pretty sure my boyfriend would want to thank Ephraim for the hike up the volcano. Even if it did almost kill him. He definitely appreciated his experience and wouldn't have made it without him. And of course a big thanks to Cesar for bringing all these wonderful people together. Tom and Cara will be back and hopefully soon.

This is a beautiful spot on Ometepe. Room was small but nice, I would recommend the cabins. Beach is fabulous and you can walk to Ojo de Agua. The food was pricey but delicious, and the services was great. We only had one night but wished we could stay longer.

We spent two nights at the Finca San Juan de la Isla on beautiful Ometepe Island. It is definitely remote and has a more rustic feel compared the places we stayed in Granada and San Juan del Sur, but we loved our time there.

The room was not our favorite part of the experience. It was average but still a little camp-y compared to what we are used to (You could hear the people in the room next door, bedding wasn't that nice, etc). But it was clean, had a decent shower, had an A/C unit in the room, and was adequate considering the other benefits of being at the Finca. We loved the hammocks and rocking chairs outside on the porch.

Our favorite part was the view of the lake and the sounds of nature, along with the amazing food. We sat outside on the porch and were served some of the freshest, most delicious chicken and fish we had during our time in Nicaragua. We also loved the tostones so much that my husband asked Ernesto to teach us how to make them. Despite the language barrier, we had a great time and this was one of our best memories of the trip. Ernesto even made us an early breakfast and sack lunches for the morning we were going to hike Concepcion Volcano. One morning after breakfast, he brought out a special treat of "guacamole" Nica-style which we are still drooling over and hope to try to re-create at home. He is a great cook! All of the staff members were extremely kind and helpful.

It was incredibly relaxing sitting outside over a delicious dinner, reading in a hammock, drinking coffee with the sounds of the lake and birds, being surrounded by the tropical island farm environment, and just being away from the busy-ness of life. We are definitely glad we went to Ometepe and would recommend staying at the Finca for a unique experience.

I stayed at Finca San Juan de la Isla for two nights with four friends I met with while traveling. A driver met us at the port and drove us to the finca, which is about 30 minutes from the main town. The last 10 minutes you are driving through banana plantations, and you instantly know that you are heading somewhere pretty cool and off the beaten path.

First off, this stay was AMAZING because of Cesar (the owner) and his beautiful wife Maria. They also have the cutest dog - Toby! Cesar stayed up late with us just talking about life and sharing stories about his family. He even let me and two friends jump into the back of his pick up as he headed into town - we flew down backroads with the wind in our faces and it was, by far, one the most memorable experiences of my time in Nica. And Maria was so sweet and so kind, we loved having her around. So, hands down, Cesar became a fast friend and we felt like we were graciously welcomed into his home, the finca. (And, imagine our surprise when we ran into Cesar and Maria at a restaurant in San Juan del Sur -- big hugs all around!!!). I miss both of them.

I wish I could remember the rest of the staffs' names, as they were all just as wonderful, from the waiters to the guards to Louis, the rancher. If you take the time to talk to them and work on your Spanish, they have all kinds of stories and are happy to get to know you.

The place is isolated, but that's the allure of it, and it was fitting before heading onto the craziness that is SJdS. The rooms were clean and just what we needed. The beach was perfect, even for midnight swims. We rode horses up (the best thing - after you ride them, Louis unsaddles the horses and they go free; they literally roam the finca and are well loved and cared for), went kayaking to two little islands, and spent most nights sitting around the dinner table sharing Toñas. I'm already wishing I could go back... I can't say enough about this place.

P.S. HI CESAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 April 2014

We also stayed at the finca in mid-April 2014 while Cesar was away on vacation. We had a very positive experience, so I offer this review from our perspective. First, this hotel is much like Ometepe itself - a quiet, rural paradise. It is indeed remote, but that was the allure for us. We had just come from San Juan del Sur so this was a great respite. You are not going to easily walk to any other restaurants or sites from the hotel. Still, we took daily excursions all over the island - they were easy to book and came with a guide/transportation.

The hotel itself does feel like you are staying on a farm or ranch but it was much nicer than I expected. We had our own cabin (Chippewa 2). Everything in it was high quality. The ac worked great. We loved our little porch with rocking chairs and a hammock. Our kids (11 and 13) loved swimming in the incredibly warm waters of the lake (right in front of the hotel). The food was some of the best we had in all of Nicaragua. Much of it sourced right from the farm. When our kids asked for coconut water, a guy from the kitchen took a machete out to a tree and got them two FRESH coconuts!

While we did not experience 5 star hotel service, it was just fine for us. They have you sign up for a dinner time so they can spread things out. This is a small place where the owner (in this case his daughter and her husband) do a lot of the work. They checked us in and showed us our cabin. Later they made my drinks at the bar. Still later they took our dinner orders and served the food. Was it perfect service? No, but they were working their butts off and went out of their way to accommodate all of our requests, so I was really pulling for them. And it is Ometepe after all - have another drink, watch the sunset, listen to the waves, and relax.

We felt safe. After dinner it was very dark and we let our kids run off trying to catch fire flies. We never had any concern whatsoever for safety. I would, however, suggest bringing a flashlight. There is not a lot of lighting and it was helpful to have a flashlight to walk back to our cabin.

All in all, if you want some rural elegance that fits in beautifully with the feel of the island, we would highly recommend this place. If you are looking for more hustle and bustle, then I suggest staying up the road in Santo Domingo.
