I will admit I am perplexed by the very good reviews from other guests at Figtree. I do not consider myself a “snobby” traveler, but if proper heat and hot water cannot be provided, then this lodge should be charging backpack/camping rates – not 4-star pricing. This is a late review from a cold winter trip in July.
We spent one night in early July and the problems with the hot water AND the heater made this a really an unpleasant stay. We arrived after a very long day and found a freezing room with a small gas-tank-supplied heater in the room. The person who showed us to our room could not get the heater started and promised to send someone to fix it right away. Help did arrive shortly and they got it going. The room was still freezing and we thought a hot bath might warm us up before dinner, but after filling the tub about two inches deep – the water was cold. Even a lukewarm bath might have been ok if the room were not so cold. AND the bathroom is huge, all tile without even a bathmat. We called about the hot water and they sent someone to look at it, and luckily as they arrived the gas heater made a very loud SWOOSH and flames were burning on the front of the heater, not warming the panels as it should. We shut off the heater, gave up on the bath, and figured we’d go to dinner where there was at least a fire. The heater and hot water problems were going to be worked on while we ate.
The main lodge has no heating at all. Two fires burning and all the guests were gathered around one of the two fires. Dinner was very good, and the service was excellent. We were informed the heater was repaired and working, and we stayed by the fire in the dining area hoping/expecting that when we returned to our room it would be toasty warm. Finally back to our room to find – nothing. The heater was not on. We got it going but within five minutes it flamed up again. At this point we gave up as having a questionable gas tank heater is not particularly safe. We tried the hot water and got the same – two minutes tops and it changed to cold. We finally just gave up at 9pm and got in bed to read and warm up.
Breakfast was very good, but no fires in the fireplaces, so I ate in several layers and a jacket. Back to our freezing cold room and my speedy husband got in a 60-second hot shower. I foolishly risked the same but 2 minutes later ran out of hot water. My husband used leftover warm tea water to rinse the soap out of my hair. Our daughter couldn’t bath at all.
We were not offered any refund or discount (as mentioned in the July 2nd review. (Although my husband complained after we returned home and I believe we got a refund for our dinner.) The hot water / heater problems are not a one-off as another guest in mid June has written about the problem also. If you want to enjoy the view, go up for lunch one day OR wait until summer when the lack of amenities will not be as big a problem. While I thought the staff was hugely helpful and very nice – the winter accommodations are just equivalent to fancy camping. For the price we paid I was hugely disappointed and will not be back, nor recommend to anyone else.
