“Don't Believe the Negative Reviews!”
Reviewed 24 January 2014

I can honestly say that I am appalled by the negative reviews people have given The Elephant House.

IF YOU EXPECT A SPOTLESS, STERILE HOTEL STAY AWAY FROM SOUTH AFRICA, its as simple as that. Yes, due to the house being open, it isn't spotless. We, however thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Elephant House and will definitely be going back! I would also recommend it to anyone who isn't too spoilt to recognize local charm when it is staring them in the face.

Due to the season, we were the only guests in the hotel, and were thoroughly spoilt by Charlene and the cooks. We had a wonderful time and were extremely sad to go.

The rooms we had were HUGE, with a living-room, bedroom and bathroom, and lots of thoughtful extras such as mosquito repellent, a flashlight, a large pile of different glossy magazines and extra blankets.

They also have a wonderful local charity, where you can donate clothing or buy cute handcrafted items. We were even given a bottle of their own wine as a goodbye gift.

The food was BRILLIANT. So is the location, right near the borders of the beautiful Addo Elephant National Park.

ADDED BONUS: We left early the next day and found that our car had been washed!
Complements to the staff!

We stayed at The Elephant house for 1 night in the stable cottage.
The cottage are quitte big, same as the bed and bathroom. Very nice decorated.
All was clean and the service was good, staff where also friendly.
Breakfast is also good.

The hotel lays near Addo Elephant Park (10 min drive).

They could improve the infrastructure (would like to have a path to the cottage, instead dragging the suitcase over the grass) and I think the activities are very expensive.
They offer a guided tour for 750 rand p.p. while we had booked it with the park for 280 rand p.p.

The Elephant house is a wonderful little hotel on the outskirts of Addo Elephant Park. The original farm house is beautifully decorated with numerous different spots to sit and enjoy the surroundings, two swimming pools, tranquil gardens, and some of the friendliest hotel staff around. The dinner we had was very good, and breakfast across at the wine bar was wonderful too. There are some little chalets across the road which would be great for families - and another large swimming pool there too.

All in all a very enjoyable two night stay.

Room Tip: If you are staying in the farmhouse, ask for a room that is furthest away from the main road.

We really enjoyed this hotel, it has a delightful atmosphere with a country house feel. The rooms are wonderful, there are lots of super sitting rooms and the swimming pool areas are excellent. The main man Clive is terrific and very helpful - he even lent me his golf clubs to play 9 holes at Kirkwood! We were generally made to feel very welcome and enjoyed our stay enormously. They run trips to the Elephant Park & an afternoon valley tour - both good. They can book other tours for you too.
If I had a criticism it is that the relaxed atmosphere also spreads to the service, but that's ok if you're relaxing and not in a hurry. We would have benefited from a better briefing on arrival, as they do have a system & it would be good if it was explained to guests up front.

The Elephant House is not to be missed if you are visiting Addo. Set amongst lush gardens the rooms are beautifully appointed, spacious and each one unique. The hotel has loads of comfortable sitting areas which you can escape to to curl up with a book or sip a G&T! Owners Anne and Smokey have ensured the personal touch is still felt at every turn. If you want to escape, see herds of elephants in the nearby park and just enjoy - - then this is the place for you!

P.S We also went on the river canoeing adventure - also highly recommend this!

The Elephant House has the romantic atmosphere of a 'hunting lodge' from a bygone era. The original building have thatched roofs, covered 'colonial' verandahs, and plush couches, Persian rugs and black and white photographs of earlier days. The perfect setting for a Gin and Tonic at the end of 'hard' day relaxing and ideal accommodation for a wonderfully relaxing stay or extended holiday.

We were lucky enough to be upgraded from one of the 'new' cottages to one of the original cottages that forms part of the main building(s). Our cottage was simply furnished in keeping with the overall decor, had a large master bedroom and a smaller room for our small person. There was a large bath and both an indoor and an outdoor shower. There were two large swimming pools and a third one nestled in near our family cottage! There is a set menu for dinner (three course), which we were able to have early to fit in with our small person. The food is top-notch and the wine list more than adequate. The breakfast spread is also in keeping with the same high standard. The staff are all friendly and 'Clive' the live-in owner is about and more than happy to have a chat. There is free WiFi.
