“A good place to stay near the Addo park but dinner too expensive.”
Reviewed 21 January 2013

We spent 2 nights at Chrislin. The place, the rooms, the pool, the garden were very nice and quite. We had dinner at the Chrislin restaurant. We were suprised by the price for a 3 course-dinner (starter = a salad, dessert= a pudding): R220 p.p.; that is about 50% over average price. Even Franschhoek restaurants were not so expensive.

We're pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us, but are sorry to read that you thought that our dinner was too expensive. We most certainly value your opinion and regard it highly.

We've always felt that we offer good value for money, considering that all our food is prepared daily on site by our skilled chef and served passionately by all our staff. We always only use the freshest, and best of ingredients in all our preparation. Our main course is usually a braai with 3 different meats, or fillet steak or a venison buffet, and a variety of vegetables, all of which one would pay at least about R130 in a restaurant, and in addition we serve a starter, which is always accompanied with homemade bread and to finish it off, a homemade desert, the value of both together being about R90.

Guests are also not obliged to eat at our lodge as there are other restaurants in the area which are highlighted at check in, we just want to give our guests the opportunity to experience an authentic South African meal, in a beautiful setting, with the convenience of not having to drive and an opportunity to sample some of our high quality South African Wines. The fact that we do most often serve meals to only a small group of people provides our guests with a
more exclusive experience, but it is costly for us for us to offer this and therefore, we can't charge much less than what we do. But fortunately, thus far, the feedback from the majority of our guests have been very happy with the quality of our meal and the price that they paid.

We had a beautiful weekend at the lodge and very enjoyed the 2 trips with Crisscross Adventures: the kayaktrip and the gamedrive with Chen. He was the best guide we experienced in all SA. Till next time.

This is a very beautifull venue, very close to Addo Elephant Parc. The staff is extremly friendly and helpfull. The cook and kitchen staff are lovely and cook the most fabulous food. Special requests are no problem at all. We like the little huts which are private and spacious. We do however recommand to plaster the thatched roof since a lot of bugs are falling out of it and some ended up in our bed! Another recommandation we have is to put up insect screens in the windows so the rooms can be ventilated night and day without having uninvited guests (bugs, insects, muskito's etc).

Thank you for your review and kind words. We're pleased that you enjoyed your stay at our lodge, but we're sorry to hear that you had a problem with insects in your room. Unfortunately, this is Africa and we're located on an eco friendly farm. This means that we don't spray our trees with insecticides, and this is why we have such amazing birdlife, because they live on the insects, which live on the trees. We do however do whatever we can to minimize the insects in the rooms, by checking the rooms for them daily. In high summer they can be slightly more difficult to control, but fortunately any insects found in your room are completely harmless. We wouldn't want to plaster the ceiling as this would take away the authenticity of the mud hut, but we do think that the insect screnes as you suggested are a good idea and we will definitely look into that further. We have noticed that the biggest complaint we receive generally is about insects, and at looking at the reviews on many other safari type lodges in South Africa, it's often the chief complaint too, so we believe that it's a common problem when out in the bush. It would be great not to have insects around, but that would dramatically affect out whole eco-system and then Africa wouldn't be Africa. So we'd like people to understand that insects are a part of life in Africa, and even though they are sometimes an irritation, very rarely are they dangerous. But saying that, we will continue to try everything in our power to keep them out of guest rooms.

We spent two nights at the Lodge and loved it. The rooms were extremely comfortable and clean, food was excellent, plenty of it.We went on 2 safaris, one with a guide from the Addo Park and one from Crisscross, both were good but the Crisscross guide from the Lodge was superb, knowledgeable and had an excellent sense of humour. The whole place is welcoming, relaxing child friendly and just brilliant. When we get some money together, we will return!!

Wow. I have officially just joined TripAdvisor to be able to write a review of Chrislin. My mom and I just returned to Cape Town from Addo and are missing Chrislin and the crew there already.

I am currently sailing around the world and my mom flew out to meet me in South Africa for the holidays . . . and Chrislin MADE our trip!!! We stayed there for 3 nights and could have stayed at least another 3!

The Pickles family that runs the lodge have to be some of the nicest people we have ever met. Since it was just my mom and I travelling, they invited us to eat dinners with them and made us just feel like part of the family.

Sneezewoods is the dining venue on the property run my Lin's daughter-in-law, Margaret, and the food is JUST spectacular!!! We looked forward to returning each evening for the great atmosphere and delicious dinners that you could enjoy over wine for hours!!!

The traditional huts they have built on the property are absolutely beautiful! My mom and I have been staying in 5 star resorts for her entire vacation and although Chrislin is does not have all the luxury of a 5 star resort, it was by far our favorite experience yet! The huts are a beautiful one-of-a-kind experience and it is that personal touch that every traveller is looking for. (Although I would try and reserve a hut with air-con during the summer months, it made a HUGE difference, especially for my mom). However, there is a lovely pool and outdoor shower with lounge area that you can cool down in the heat of the day if need be.

Since my mom and I are last minute planners and hadn't reserved a rental car, we had to travel by plane to Port Elizabeth and Chrislin arranged all of our transfers from there on out. They even have Crisscross Adventures supported out of Chrislin that is the best way to explore Addo National Park and the surrounding area. *** Trust me, we went with Crisscross guides as well as guides from Addo National Park and there was NO comparison. The Crisscross guides are THE BEST! So passionate and really give you a personal experience. Chrislin can arrange all the tours with them. They make everything SO easy!!!!

South Africa is a long journey from California but my mom and I have already said we are coming back to Chrislin without a doubt!!! It is honestly worth flying to Port Elizabeth for!!!!!

Room Tip: I would recommend asking for one of the "superior" huts with air-con. If that is not avail...

I stayed here with friends for a wedding that was at the venue. We stayed two nights. It is such a lovely spot, very quiet. The staff were fantastic, the overall feel was very relaxed. The room was well set up and had plenty of space. The food on the Friday night was great and good value. It's a short drive from Addo which is an added bonus. What a fun wedding at a perfect location!
