“Interesting place of worship”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2014

It is a complex consisting of multiple buildings. The core is the heavily ornamented church. The premises contain a wide court, a cafe, holy water spring and parking ground. It is a popular place for tourists accessible without paying an entrance fee. If you visit Mantamados town you can add few more kilometers to your route and visit this one, as well. I felt that majority of the visitors found Taxiarchis Church interesting.

“A Beautiful, Remote, Greek Orthodox Church honoring the Archangels”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 June 2014

After landing in Mytilene on Lesbos, we went on an excursion to the countryside. Our first stop was a Greek Orthodox Church dedicated to the "Taxiarches", the archangels Michael and Gabriel who are apparently very important figures in the Greek Orthodox religion. This is a remarkably ornate and beautiful church with some unusual features. Three sides of the church each have 5 rows of small circular windows, in the sequence 5,6,7,6,5. These are colored so that seen on the inside the sunlight creates wonderful colored circles of light. In addition there are several magnificent cut glass or crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling over the congregants, as well as smaller ones. The interior walls are done in blue and gold, and contain colorful icons common to Greek Orthodox churches and which create an ornate and beautiful interior. There is a tall structure in the courtyard topped by a four sided clock which perhaps is a baptistery and bell tower. It is a work of art in its own right.

There is a small village nearby which might be called Taxiarches, although I am not sure of that.
