“Perfect Paradise at Palmazul”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 January 2011

My husband and I spent a week at Palmazul and loved it! The room was very comfortable, great linens, roomy, and an ocean view off our balcony that was to die for. All the public areas are open to the outdoors, as the weather here is perfect all the time, and no bugs, just a gentle breeze. The pool, the bar, the restaurant with an accommodating chef, the beach, were all you could want, we'll be back next year!

Just returned from a two-week stint in Ecuador. We stayed three nights at Palmazul and could not be happier.

Our room (15) was small, but very clean nicely appointed, and it had a great view from the third-floor balcony.

The pool was terrific. The poolside beds were a great place to relax, and the beach was beautiful and clean.

What really shines at Palmazul is their staff. They catered to our every need, and even prepared a special dinner for two that was a completely unexpected surprise.

Thanks, Palmazul!

From the moment we arrived at Palmazul, we were treated like royalty by the attentive staff. We were greeted with a fresh juice and a cool cloth to clean off the dust from the scenic 50 minute ride to San Clemente from Manta.

The view from our room was spectacular. The bed was comfortable and the sound of the waves breaking just behind the hotel was too wonderful to close the balcony doors, however, leaving the doors open made for a warm night's sleep!

The swimming pool was clean and refreshing any time of the day or night.

The food? Well, there is just one word for it...YUMMY!! Every dish we tried was very delicious (and we tried nearly every one!). In particular, we enjoyed the Ceviche Camaron and Pescalo al Limon and Atun and...oh my, we liked it ALL! It was obvious that the chefs have been trained in the culinary arts because the presentation of each dish was very appealing.

Lourdes, the director, was very helpful (she speaks fluent English!) and the staff was very patient assisting us with our Spanish. I recommend taking an English-Spanish dictionary.

The beach, to the north, was beautiful and the people of San Clemente were very welcoming. At low tide, one can walk for a couple of miles to the north and there are no crowds, in fact, you will run into very few people at all, except for the young men playing soccer on the sand.

Highly recommended!

This was my eight or ninth time I spent a long weekend in Palmazul and as always I enjoyed it a lot! Besides having renovated and relocated the spa and built and installed the flashiest/nicest bar in Ecuador, we really appreciated their new French chef exquisite menus, a class above the standard coastal food found on the coast.

The reason why we have chosen Palmazul so often is the combination of long empty beaches, a great pool often filled with children which is super for a families, great sleeping in their very comfortable beds listening to the waves of the ocean and a friendly service which makes you feel part of a family. Personnally I enjoy the long runs/bike ride on the beach and an occasional climb to the mountain located 1km inland from the hotel which is some great excercise.

It is not a party animal scene - it is familyoriented or romantic get away.
San Clemente is a nice and safe coastal village with surprisingly many foreigners.

it is almost impossible to find something of this standard in Ecuador today so I would highly recommend it.

Three gringos on an Ecuador adventure! We had a wonderful stay at the Palmazul Hotel resort in San Clemente. The weather was a perfect 70F at night and up to 85F during the day, mostly sunny with cool ocean breeze... no rain. We found the hotel manager and assistant as well as the rest of the staff would go out of there way to help us with local information, taxis, directions, translations, phone calls, etc. The hotel is like an oasis on the Pacific coast located in a small fishing village about 45 km north of Manta... quiet, remote and tranquil. Guess you might call it a boutique hotel. Not the usual massive, all inclusive, impersonal, chain resort, but one with that gives a 'we care about you' feeling. Just what we wanted. One evening the hotel chef created this chicken pasta thing for us that was simply delicious. If you don't see it on the menu, just ask him to innovate and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Twice we had fresh local lobsters... wow! and the shrimp are so BIG there. We were also pleased that there was a gringo cheeseburger and fries on the menu and actually tasted authentic. The hotel rooms are all ocean view, spacious, comfortable and tastefully furnished, not air conditioned which for this time of year wasn't a concern for us. They do have portable units for use if requested I'm told. The mosquitoes can be annoying (if they like you) and the nets in the rooms help while sleeping. Screens on the doors could help I think. The bartender was great at whipping up pina coladas, and other tropical drinks with fresh coconut, pineapple and passion fruit. We made several day trips, one to Crucita (30 min) for shopping and hang gliding, Canoa (2 hrs) for horse back riding on the beach and to Porto Viejo (1 hr) for a mall shopping trip. The best was the horseback riding and doing beach hammock time while downing a few cervazas or tequilas at the hotel. If you like Italian food, there is Graziani's authentic Italia restaurant for pizza and pasta just one block from the hotel. Meier's bar and grill (run by a German expat) is about one km from the hotel and is very reasonable for local seafood and traditional meals. I feel the value at Palmazul was very good with the package discount we received. We heard that they would be doing some upgrades to the hotel this year so it should be even better for our next visit. All in all it was a fun and pleasurable tropical adventure for us.

The plan was to stay the last 3 days of our honeymoon in this hotel. Arriving in the hotel did not mean a warm welcome. It took them 40 minutes to have our first drink ready. Making a proper cocktail was very hard. The fingerfood was horribly fried, fatty stuff. The bar was not used for days and dirty glasses were standing on it. They present their restaurant as being a high class fusion cooking place. Well, the only thing they could serve were shrimps, every time cooked in the same way. A lot of dishes were not available. They have an open kitchen which they better can close immediatelly as you see the cook walking around eating from a big bowl of rice.
Furthermore, the tenniscourt could not be used as it was full of contruction materials. In the gym there are 2 devices of which 1 is totally broke. And their 'Spa' (which they present like that on their website etc) is just 1 room with 2 beds on it.
The rooms are a little bit 'kitchy' and some maintenance is needed.
The location is great, right at the beach but the quality and service of this hotel is bad.
We left after one night.
On top of all we both heavy stomoach problems 1 days after we left and it took almost a week. I would not be surprised if this was caused by the food...
