“Three lovely days”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2012

We have just returned from our fifth visit to this little gem of a country house Hotel set above the Tamar valley. We received the usual very warm welcome from the owners and their friendly, professional staff..Our Garden room was so very comfortable and clean. The large modern bathroom, just lovely with lots of hot water. The panoramic views from our balcony down across Cornwall with mine stacks in the far distance were beautiful. Our room faced west so on the clear evenings the sunsets were spectacular.
We stayed three nights and each evening the food was varied and very delicious. We are looking forward to spending our third Christmas at the Horn of Plenty!

An overnight stay which was everything we hoped for. A warm and friendly welcome and an unexpected upgrade to a lovely room with views over the Tamar valley. Spotlessly clean bathroom and superbly comfortable beds. The food is excellent as are the staff. Wish we could go more often and for longer.
From the information in the room, it apears that beauty treatments and massage etc could be organised.

There is no pool or fitness centre.

Having spent a busy few days touring around Devon we were really looking forward to our night at The Horn Of Plenty for some rest and relaxation. Checking the reviews and the hotel website before booking, we were given the impression of a luxurious stay with fine food and I’m pleased to say our experience was everything we hoped it would be and more.

We stayed in a garden room which was beautifully appointed with extremely comfortable Queen sized bed and all the trappings and trimmings you could hope for; comprehensive selection of drinks, fresh milk, minibar, flatscreen tv along with luxurious bathroom with twin basin, bath with shower over. The best part of the room were the patio doors opening onto a small balcony which overlooked the beautiful hills and rolling countryside. We had beautiful weather during our stay and it was lovely and relaxing looking out at the view whilst having a pot of tea and eating our complimentary cupcakes.

After a restful afternoon we wandered around to the dining room for our early dinner reservation. Our meal was totally delicious, the presentation only equalled by the quality and taste of the food, perfectly balanced and matched throughout. We were served canapés to start, a delectable assortment of homemade breads, then starters and an amuse bouche. All the food was of the highest standard, particularly the main course of Lamb with aubergine puree, small sweetbread croquettes and beautifully layered potatoes, absolutely delicious. Mustn’t forget dessert which we managed to fit in just!

Equally important to the quality of accommodation and food are the fabulous people who work at The Horn of Plenty, from making my initial enquiry through the whole stay they were friendly welcoming and made our stay so much more enjoyable and relaxing. Nothing seemed like it would be too much trouble.

Given the chance we would be back next weekend, unfortunately we live a little too far away but I have no doubt we will be making plans to come again in the not so distant future.

An amazing location, building and views that cannot fail to disappoint! The welcome was rather unwelcoming after a long journey, however...We checked with the hotel when we booked that they are family friendly as our children are fairly young (5&6) and were reassured children are welcome. Yet, when we arrived, it seemed a surprise to them and we were told children under 8 are not allowed in the dining room. We had to remind them that this was made clear and checked on when we booked and they conceded they would be allowed to eat. The service in the restaurant was charming and personal and the food was absolutely superb - the kids enjoyed their fine dining experience, behaved themselves and ate everything! The rooms are tastefully decorated and the beds supremely comfortable. Unfortunately, our experience was less than satisfactory as the water was just about lukewarm (so we had top the bath up by boiling the kettle several times) and our sleep was disturbed by an alarm clock ringing for 45 minutes at 1am in the locked, unused bedroom next door. Breakfast was fabulous - one of the best we have eaten. Overall worth a visit for the location and the talent in the kitchen but brace yourself for shabby service front of house. Clearly an expensive retreat so we weren't left with a warm feeling when we mentioned the problems encountered in our rooms and got a swift " Sorry about that - there's not a lot I can do about it in retrospect".

Room Tip: Make sure the water from the bath/shower tap is hot before you unpack and settle in if booked into r...

We recently had lunch here after being recommended the restaurant. The views are really lovely from the dining room but we were rushed straight to our table when we were told we would get canapes in the library first. We were then presented with the Charity Lunch Menu on a dirty printed out sheet of paper. No mention of this lunch menu when we booked. When we enquired how much of our bill went to charity we were told "none" but were asked to make a donation usng envelopes on the table. A little bizarre we thought.

Anyway, onto the food. I ordered risotto which was bland but also had a film of skin on top as it it had been sitting under lights. A word to the chef ..... since when was risotto supposed to have so much bite to it it was verging on underdone?? My husband had the terrine, again quite bland. Main course was sea bream which was nice but an extremely small portion. We also were never asked if we wanted another drink after our aperitif.

Only other point to make is that we were the youngest there by at least 30 years. Perhaps the norm for during the week but a little surprising all the same.

However, for the food' I'm afraid we won't be returning.

Enjoyed the charity lunch with a large group, they coped well with us. Portions not very big though, men would be hungry.
