“Wish we had stayed longer!”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

My husband and I stayed for my birthday in August 2014 for a bit of quiet time. I had looked around with a view to getting married here in the past and have always wanted to stay since- and we were glad we did! We were escorted straight to our room when we arrived. Our room had been upgraded which was unexpected in peak season. It was in the newly built section, but upstairs as requested (17 i think) very spacious, comfortable large bed and a great bathroom (tub for 2!). It was perfectly quiet for sleeping. We ate in the restaurant which was fantastic, fine dining portions being great leaving us comfortable full. We enjoyed the complimentary nibbles. Good wine list and our waitress was very knowledgable on Whisky, being able to recommend to my husband. Attentive but not intrusive staff. We also had a cream tea with freshly baked scones (plenty of conserve and cream). Breakfast was great too, I always like to have fruit and its very annoying when it is firm and tastless but the offerings at the HOP were perfect! The setting is so tranquil and beautiful and the hotel and staff so classy without being stuffy and snobby and we cannot wait to visit again.

My wife and I spent two nights at the Horn of Plenty on our way back from the South Coast.

We stayed in a newly built block with an excellent room with a large balcony overlooking the Tamar Valley.

The staff were very helpful in every respect and the dining was of the highest standard and the Tasting Menu recommended.

We will definitely return and we look forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: A valley view the suite in the new extension was excellent in every respect. Everyone cannot have...

It was a visit for a delicious birthday celebration cream tea. Very comfortable in the lounge. Very good tea and scones beautifully presented. Staff very attentive. I have been for lunch on several occasions and would certainly recommend a visit. It would be worth booking.

We were combining this with a falconry experience, run from the hotel by Tom Buncle. We stayed the night before on a Sunday deal: excellent value. Our room was in the outbuilding but had a small balcony with 2 chairs, perfect for relaxing after the journey. Facilities in the room were good: tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and a spacious bathroom. Personally I'd have swapped one of the two wash basins for a proper shower cubicle rather than one over the bath. Our one gripe was with the bed. This can't have been more than 5 years old but was far too soft. We are not overweight but our pelvises sank below the level of our feet...really bad for backs! So we removed the mattresses and slept comfortably on the divan base but this is not ideal obviously.
The dinner was very good. The starter especially was one of the best I've experienced. Perfectly cooked veal sweetbreads with small pieces of lobster, accompanied by a lobster bisque: such a good match. Several good wines were available by the glass.
Breakfast was also well above average with eggs benedict, scrambled egg and smoked salmon or smoked haddock, all on offer as well as the usual full English, all locally sourced. (Apart from French yogurt!)
Overall a very good experience. We shall probably stay again but only if we can be assured of a firmer bed!

Room Tip: Ask about the beds if you have a bad back.

I had arranged to go to Tavistock (we live in Barnet) and because of the distance (and traffic) thought we would go on a Saturday, stay over and return on the Sunday. My wife chose the Horn of Plenty based on the restaurant reviews. We had one of the new rooms and were absolutely delighted with it and because of the reviews we were keen to eat in the restaurant, we chose the lamb and the beef and this was superb. After dinner we sat on the terrace in the warm evening overlooking the Tamar valley, polishing off the rest of our wine. The staff were charming, the hotel was lovely, it's great value for money and we will certainly visit again.

The Horn of Plenty is our "special occasion" restaurant, and over the years we have celebrated birthdays, exam results, family visits, and anniversaries, and never come away disappointed. The food is always excellent, the staff friendly and welcoming.
Because we are fairly local, we had never stayed, but decided that our anniversary was a perfect excuse to sample a night in one of the new garden rooms.
Boy, was it worth it!
Our room was luxury personified. It was beautifully and tastefully appointed, with a bed so large the two sides were in different postcodes. The view through the full width bi-fold doors, over the decking balcony, and across the valley, looked amazing in the evening sun, and made the champagne taste even better.
The bathroom was also fantastic, with the best shower I have ever had.
Dinner was, as always, excellent, and we can't wait for another excuse to eat there again!

After researching wedding venues in the South West we came across the Horn of Plenty & knew instantly this is where we wanted to hold our reception! From our first meeting with Julie I had no fear it was going to be amazing & the day certainly was! From the moment we arrived to leaving the following day everything was perfect, Julie was such a great help, Scott & kitchen team for preparing the most fantastic wedding food & all the staff that kept our guests happy throughout the day!
Our guests still talk about what a brilliant venue, team of staff & of course the food now!
We had exclusive hire for the weekend which was brilliant as all our close family were able to stay and we had the best breakfast the following morning! The rooms are luxurious and beautifully decorated.
We also went for a birthday lunch, where the food was completely faultless & staff brilliant once again!
Our final dining experience was at the Champagne & Lobster evening which was such a lovely evening, the food was so tasty & beautifully presented, staff brilliant & a very knowledgable guest speaker that paired the champagne with the food brilliantly!
All in all this is a truly magical place which has given me the best of memories to treasure forever!
Thank you Horn of Plenty!
We will see you again very soon xx
