Tintern Old Rectory is a very nice B&B in a gorgeous location - okay, they are next to the road but its really not that busy. Ian and Anika are a charming couple and keen to share their knowledge of nearby places of interest, walks, pubs and restaurants. Their dogs are super cute and very friendly too! The rate was reasonable for a pleasant room with a lovely view over the Wye, tea-making facilities, freesat tv and bathrobes provided. The bathroom was down the hall, but this was not a problem as there were no other guests using it. Breakfast was a monumental affair - I lost track of the number of fruit juices, jams, marmalades and honeys to choose from. If you're looking for a quirky and fun place to stay within easy walking distance of Tintern Abbey, then this could be a good choice.

Stayed here for two days then another two as was so good. The food was really good (especially the fish!) and the location in the heart of the Wye valley meant it was easy to see some of the area's really beautiful countryside. The room gave me my best night's sleep and parking was good too - which can be a bit tricky in Tintern. The owners were really well informed about local top tips whjich made all the difference. I had a great 4 hours canoeing and found some wonderful roman sites and castles. not just the abbey!!

Everything about our stay at the Old Rectory was excellent. The room itself was ideal, with a lovely view of the river and the comfiest bed I've ever found in a bed and breakfast. What really makes this accommodation stand out are the thoughtful personal touches of Ian and Annika. The breakfast is great - the fresh juices, fruit salads, locally baked bread and extensive local jams really add to it. The advice offered about where to eat and where to go (even when it is incredibly wet, as it was for some of our visit) was incredibly helpful and always right! All of this is achieved for a very reasonable price and you have all the beauty of the Wye Valley right on your doorstep. Highly recommended.

We booked this guest house after seeing the reviews on Trip Advisor. Sadly we had a terrible stay. We were in double and twin interjoining room for two nights. The double room was comfortable, however the twin room had flimsy patio doors to the owners private quarters and my friends who slept there were kept awake for hours; on the first night by noise from the owners and on the second night by noise from the dogs. This problem could be rectified by building a wall (with window) between the guest rooms and the owners quarters. On the plus side; the house was nicely decorated, the owners were very kind as they did a load of washing for us, and the kippers in the morning were lovely. However, we were too tired to enjoy the sights of Tintern which ruined our visit there. In addition more attention could be paid to the cleanliness of the rooms as the carpet in our room was filthy, and bags of dog poo had been left outside on the patio area. Without the noise I would say this is £5-£10 overpriced.

Anika-Ian, Owner at Tintern Old Rectory B&B, responded to this reviewResponded 26 January 2011

We were looking forward to this visit of three friends coming to visit, one in our family room, and two in twin beds in the adjoining room to make a spacious accommodation for three.
So unfortunately, a serious crisis with close family occurred the first night of these guests stay. It was a very critical issue and required us to deal with problems around midnight. The guests in the twin area were disturbed by the emergency commotion, which unfortunately could not be avoided. The next morning, we discussed this with the guests. We also discounted the room with the noise to a complimentary stay for that room due to the problems. They freely decided to stay the second night and we did our utmost to accommodate them and make them as comfortable and happy as possible - including doing laundry for them, helping them dry many clothes and making extra special breakfasts. They seemed happy and content the second morning, and had made no comments about the dogs. It seemed that they had left reasonably happy, enjoying breakfasts, and also using everything in the room to the maximum (shampoos, bathrobes, complimentary items) - it took us 3-4 times our normal cleanup time to prepare the rooms for the next guests.
This was understandable as they must have felt it their right to get as much benefit as possible of any frills to make up for the one night with regrettably so unfortunate emergency problems.
What is distressing is that they had said they were happy, had a good sleep, nice second day and night, and seemed to have enjoyed the remaining stay. Again, we refunded the cost of the additional room (which had the noise issue) and they were free to leave the second night but chose not to.
We are sad that a problem occurred - sometimes unavoidable - and did our utmost to rectify it. However it is unfortunate they didn't mention being disturbed by dogs barking (?) keeping them awake the second night, and said they had a sound sleep. The 'bag of dog poo' was a doggy bag left outside the secondary entrance that leads to the garden, usually used only by pet owners, and we had not known that previous quests did this, as it was not in the normal disposal area. We still appreciate the honest discretion of this guest for expressing distress, and describing some of the things we did to help them enjoy their visit .

The picture of the Old Rectory gives the impression that it is a beautifully secluded detatched property overlooking the Wye. We were a little disapponted, then, to discover that it was actually only slightly set back from a busy main road with the river on the other side. The parking is on the other side of the road which is a mild inconvenience and The Old Rectory is also more or less opposite a garage which detracts a little from the 'tranquil surroundings'.
Anika was welcoming and helpful when we arrived, explaining how everything worked but also how some things didn't work! Again, a mild annoyance was that one of the bedside lamps didn't work - this would not have been difficult to put right by replacing it straight away but though we were told it didn't work it wasn't replaced during our three day stay. The bathroom was very small and Anika warned us that the toilet makes a lot of noise. It is some special type of toilet into which one must not put too much toilet paper. This had me a little worried!
A final negative I should mention is that the there were areas that didn't seem as clean as they might be - the stair carpet was quite dirty and the carpet in our bedroom could have been cleaner; one of the rugs had a brown stain on it. Some of the paintwork was a bit grubby and my husban said he had a couple of hairs in his breakfast on two of the three days we stayed.
On the other hand, the bed was lovely and big and the sheets were beautifully cotton crisp. The view from the window (accross the road!) was, indeed special and one can watch the Wye gently flowing (oddly in two directions) from the breakfast table - we were lucky enough to get the window table every day.
I think the breakfasts were extremely good - I had kipper every morning and it was real kipper - delicious, as was the locally made bread and jams and a truely delicious fruit salad Anika made fresh every morning.
Over all we would say it is a pleasant B and B but we feel that, given the price, it could have been a bit better in the areas mentioned. If someone wanted to stay in Tintern I would recommend The Old Rectory with the proviso that they were aware of the downsides.
