We were travelling to a hotel further west and had booked dinner. Just needed a quick light lunch. Ordered a jacket spud with a salad. Served by a very pleasant young lady. We have eaten so many undercooked jackets that I thought..."here we go again ....prepare for the 3 o clock indigestion bout.!" It arrived very quickly and it was just great. Well cooked and well presented. Lashings of cheese and a good salad . Great atmosphere as there were loads of bikers on a charity event. Good to see not one of them was drinking anything stronger than Coke.

The food was typical pub food, just average, with a stale oil taste. Waiters were young people who didn't seem to have been trained, not very attentive. Few vegetarian options. Seemed to us that they traded on the view, which was wonderful. The bad thing about outdoor seating in the UK is that they allow smoking everywhere, which restricts outdoor seating for non smokers. Still, it was probably the second best place to eat in Tintern.

Had a meal here recently, in a group of eight. Excellent food, which all came at the same time, with no mistakes. Lovely helpful and capable waittress. Good beers. Couldn't fault it.

Excellent food, really well presented. The medley of pork is particularly delicious! Good range of food and not too expensive. Beautiful setting!

So we took our seats at a table in The Anchor with a glorious view of the Abbey, but were greeted with a "sorry we're closed" by the waitress despite the 2 obvious 'open' signs in the window. This could be forgiveable had the waitress not also observed us struggle with my gran in her wheelchair for sometime before telling us this. However she then said she would allow us to order a cream tea so we gratefully placed our order and excitedly waited for our cream tea. What followed was the worst cream tea I have ever experienced and such a major disappointment I have felt compelled to write this.
It consisted of a stale sultana scone (like one from a packet of cheap budget supermarket scones), a stingy blob of clotted cream and a cheap and jelly like jam all horribly chilled and completely unenjoyable. Unfortunately we'd already paid and the waitress then made a disappearing act into the kitchen where she and the rest of the staff remained whilst more customers poured in and we were left to explain to everyone they weren't taking orders and were closed. I also took the opportunity to tell these fortunate 'would be customers' that it was terrible and they'd had a lucky escape!
Thankfully had it not been for a lovely visit to the Abbey afterwards, then I'm afraid this experience could have ruined our trip.
