“Local food, cooked & served perfectly”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2013

This is a pub which has everything, excellent food, sourced locally and prepared by someone who adores food. We must admit to happily driving past many other adequate and enjoyable pubs, restaurants, and hotels to arrive here. The service, ambience and real fires are welcoming in winter and atmospheric in spring, autumn & summer. Nothing is too much trouble for your hosts Steve & Jill, assisted by their son & daughter-in-law you really are made to feel part of the family. Dogs are not just allowed they are genuinely welcomed ... even ones which have had a lovely long walk & play in the local muddy fields & woods. In our opinion you will not find a better country pub in monmouthshire, and we have tried most of them!

“Friendly and convenient”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 August 2013

We have been enjoying the Sunday evening specials the Fountain has offered.Went to a Barbecue and then to a Paella evening. In both cases excellent food served casually and with a smile.
Great value and very enjoyable in every way. We can certainly recommend this pub for Sunday lunch as well as these new special evenings.

“Excellent food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2013

We visited The Fountain Inn for their Paella evening. The food was excellent and freshly prepared. There was an abundance of all sorts of fish, calamari, mussels, clams and prawns in the dish. Piping hot Calamari rings in batter were brought to our table from the kitchen. This is thew second "special" evening event that we have attended recently on a Sunday night and on both occassions the food has been excellent and the atmosphere in the pub convivial. In the past we have had Sunday lunch which has always been freshly cooked and very reasonable priced.

“Don't judge a book by its cover.”

Stopped in on our way through to Tintern, pleasantly surprised. We did not intend to go in as we were on our way to see the Abbey but the road was closed. The gardens are beautiful and they allow dogs, but the building is long overdue for a face lift. We hesitantly ordered what was advertised as fresh lobster for two. It took fifteen to twenty minutes to arrive but it was well worth the wait, it was indeed fresh and cooked to perfection. An extra bonus was the delicious fresh salad (that we spotted the landlord picking from his own vegetable plot!!!) and the home made sun-dried tomato bread was to die for. I would certainly recommend this as a place to stop and eat. It proves you can not judge a book by its cover.

“Excellent food, with a wide range of options in quiet location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 August 2013

It wasn't our first choice but my girlfriend, her aunt and uncle and I still bounded into The Fountain Inn expecting good things and we weren't disappointed. Aesthetically, this may not win many awards, even persuading a willing customer that the murky interior was endearing or authentic may be a hard sell. I understand floods are a problem in this area and there was certainly a damp feel to our surroundings yet there was a fireplace and sofas as an option for warming up.

So how did this seemingly average building win me over into a rating of 4 stars? Well, the essence was this - the food was brilliant! The service was prompt and so was the delivery of food...ok, we were one of two tables in there and ambiance wasn't in abundance but the menu was incredibly varied, with options pleasingly for a vegetarian and vegan eater. This makes life a lot easier in choolsing a venue, and there were pages and pages of choice.
The taste itself was delightful, I had chicken, bacon n' brie on a bed of horseradish mash and a wonderful brie sauce. a vegetarian jalfrezi and the lager battered fish n' chips also got resounding full stomachs.

I would also add it was relatively good value for money and there were plenty of drink options, along with a curious amount of confectionery behind the bar. What this pub lacked in certain qualities, it made up for in two very important qualities; taste and service.
