We were travelling through the area and stopped at The Merryburn Hotel for the night for accommodation, wow, what a great discovery we made. Hilary is a lovely, welcoming lady who couldn't do enough for us. She had written some sight seeing points of interests for us which were fantastic! The room was very comfortable, breakfast warm and hearty, and the bar in the cellar where we had dinner was great and the staff were as lovely and friendly as Hilary is herself. We would definitely recommend the Merryburn and if we were ever back in Perthshire we would definitely stay at Hilary's again.

Always happy to return to The Merryburn. Birnam/Dunkeld is a lovely, civilised place and this hotel is excellent value. Hilary is a hard working lady and deserves to succeed. Support The Merryburn and she surely will.

My friends and I stayed at the Merryburn for a special celebratory weekend. Hilary and her staff could not have done more for us. The unbelievable amount of food at dinner and breakfasts was just delicious. Much thought and effort went in to making sure all guests and all dietary needs were catered for.
A very special weekend with many special memories.
Thoroughly recommended place to stay/eat.

This small hotel beats the big guys hands down yes it's great value ,no it does not have swimming pool but it does have staff who will go the extra mile and the rooms are clean fresh and relaxing .
It is a old hotel and is bit tired but price and service take it miles beyond the competition

Room Tip: They are all good

We had a slightly shaky start here as there was a sign on the front door telling us to enter via the cellar bar, which involved a lot of steps and scruffy, narrow winding corridors - a bit much for my disabled mother with a case, but after realising the front door was actually open all along, we got over that!
The building is very old and atmospheric. You get slopey, creaking floors (under a slightly dated carpet) in the hall and stairs. Our room (2) was pretty and fresh (except the water stains on the otherwise beautiful ceiling). The ensuite (with just a shower) was very tiny and dated but clean. The bed was a bit creaky and had a roll to the middle feature and there was no double glazing against the noise from the road behind the trees. It was roomy and bright though and we were happy enough.
The curry we had that evening in the restaurant was certainly home made - very nice but not authentic - didn't really matter - and very good value. My mother loved her steak. The restaurant is nice and bright with an open fire. The Scottish music was unnecessary. There was only one sort of red/white or rose wine available!
We didn't use the bar, which looked a bit scruffy, but I understand the karaoke was great fun the night we were there and others seem to love it. We were in late; for other revellers, beware the front door after hours - its not enough just to turn the key; the lovely old latch below isn't immediately obvious!
Breakfast was nice (I missed my Earl Grey) but as we were the only ones in, we asked for the really loud accordion music to be turned off - who has time for that on a Sunday morning?!
The staff were nice.
My 4 stars are for value; all in all this is a cheap place to stay and has nothing much wrong with it. I think a small hike in price to enable a nice wine list and a touch more luxury would be a good investment.

The Merryburn hotel is a good family run hotel in Birnam just 5mins from railway station.
Hilary is a very good host. The accomodation is excellent, nicely furnished and spotless. Also very good value for money. Meals are available and a good value for money. If you like your football when staying in the village the Merryburn is the only hotel here that has Sky and ESPN.
The bar staff are very accomodating when you want to watch your team!!!

Well worth a visit .

Room Tip: If you do not want too be above the public bar ask for a room at the back of the hotel.
