“Conveniant simple hotel at the seafront”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 April 2014

The Hotel Tavern is located near to the Harbour and the embarkation quay of the ferries to Srigao Island (known for surfing). The hotel has a new and an old part. I was staying in the old part. The room was clean and soberly furnished. The bath room was clean but somewhat old and exhausted. Internet connection was free, but was hardly working.
The Tavern Restaurant seems to be one of the best in Surigao. Affordable local, Western and Chinese dishes are served. Next to the hotel is an open Tavern; popular with the local folks, serving simple grilled or deep-fried food. A band plays from 08:00 PM till late deafeningly loud music. The breakfast is tailored to the local taste.
The sea promenade, which is also the acces road harbour is in front of the hotel. The road is used as overnight parking for trucks. Small stalls offer simple snacks and cheap booze.
Although the hotel is located by the sea, there is no way to swim. The tavern hotel is an alternative to the Park Hotel which is located at the airport. Guests of the hotel are mostly Filipinos or expats working in the mining companies. Surigao does not offer much to a tourist, but is mainly a transit point to Srigao Island as mentioned above.

There was lots of Mosquitos and ants, which was not ideal for such a nice hotel. Wifi very rarely works in the room you have to go to the lobby, which is a bit of a nuisance. I would recommend take your own shampoo and conditioner with you because they provide a sachet shampoo and that's it.

Breakfast was a highlight, always deferent options I really enjoyed that. And staff in there are friendly. I found the staff in the restaurant down stairs to not be very friendly.

Prepare for a lot of blackouts that was also another point off.

But you have a beautiful view of the ocean and you can always go for a walk by the boulevard it's very nice. Night time you can always go downstairs to EJs garden where they have people singing very nice.

I stayed one night at Hotel Tavern in Surigao City, April 2014. I would have stayed more if I had the chance. A very nice place to stay with a beautiful overlook of the ocean and boardwalk.

I recomend getting an ocean view room up as high as possible. The sunrise in the morning is worth it. This was one of the few hotels I have good things to say about over my 2 weeks in the Philippines. I would recomend this place to anyone. At aust $50 usd, it is worth it. Thank you.

We had a very pleasant 1 night stay. We booked this hotel before flying back to manila from siargao. The room was very nice, comfy bed and small but clean bathroom, the restaurant was very good, foods are very tasty. All in all, lovely stay!

I love to stay @ Tavern when I am in Surigao city. The rooms have balconies and the water views are simply stunning. You can watch sunrise and sunset from the boulevard or from your room balcony. There are small boats across the hotel for guests to visit other islands. I would recommend Siargao Island. The restaurant @ Tavern is average but there are couple of restaurants in the area. Guests can enjoy the breakfast buffet and the food is good. They also have airport transfer but you have to advise them ahead of time for your arrival and departure. There are no taxis in the city but plenty of multi-cabs and tricycles to take you places. The hotel is close to Surigao Market where you can buy fresh fruits, grilled fish or any kind of food. It is also one multicab ride to Gaisano mall where you can buy other necessities. Strip of fast food chains like Mcdonald's, Jollibee, Chowking, Greenwich Pizza and etc. can be found near the vicinity of St. Paul University, Rizal St. not far from Tavern Hotel. There are two Mercury Drug stores in Rizal St to buy water, sodas, juices and medicines. Spas and beaches are nearby. For more info and anything else just ask the hotel concierge and they will help you. Overall Tavern is a good place to stay in Surigao city.

Room Tip: higher floor with balcony

I stayed there Sept 2013 - nothing special but nothing really to complain about. Breakfast was better than other places of a similar price. Staff friendly, clean and hot water. The location is good - walking distance to centre and on seafront although you do have to cross the road.

After having spent much of my time in the area on Dinagat Island, it was nice to spend the last days of my trip in the Tavern Hotel. If you've never spent time in the more remote Philippine Islands, then you might have to adjust your expectations. There are surprises you will discover about the day to day life here. This is not metropolitan US. So my review is based with on a local perspective. The rooms are average by US standards, which is to say they are luxurious in Surigao. It was very pleasing to have running cold and luke warm water. Cold showers were the norm anywhere else I stayed. The breakfast buffet was very good. American and Philippine style foods were available. It was nice to enjoy a real breakfast each morning. This American can endure rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner for so long before eggs and potatoes become a real need. It was really nice to be able to use plastic! Everywhere else in the area will not accept credit cards. It is not easy to convert dollars into pesos in large amounts here. Recommend you convert most of your cash on your way through Manila. All of the staff are especially gracious. You will always feel like an appreciated guest in this hotel. The hotel is located on the waterfront. Ferry docking is right outside the hotel. These ferries run regular trips to the smaller islands in the area. So there is a lot of activity outside your window. I enjoy people watching so I found this especially pleasing. There are nice seating areas outside the lobby. The staff will check on you in case you desire coffee or spirits while you enjoy the relaxing ambiance and entertaining activities of the waterfront harbor.

All in all it was a very pleasant stay. It is not the Hawaii Hilton, but it might just be as comfortable as it gets for us spoiled westerners out of our normal element.

Room Tip: I recommend a waterside room.
