“Great food but didn't stay the night”
Reviewed 12 March 2014 via mobile

We tramped into Furneaux from Ship Cove and loved swimming off the pier before tucking into fantastic meals of chicken burgers and lamb rump, both were divine.
The staff were incredibly helpful, friendly and service conscious.
We caught a water taxi on to Punga Cove.

Stayed here for 2 nights to sample the Marlborough Sounds as part of a 4 week holiday in NZ. Very good location on the Queen Charlotte Track - we were able to get a water taxi across to Punga Cove and then walk back to the lodge in just over 3 hours, which was a perfect taste of the track for us.
Evening meals were very good too - pasta one night and market fish the next were both well done and tasty. Staff were generally friendly.
However, they do need to improve attention to detail and service. Our suite was reasonably clean except for a pile of cigarette butts on our deck, which we had to ask to get removed. A few repairs and sprucing up needed too - our shutters were broken, and the shower had cracked tiles and a bit of mould. We did get clean towels on day 2, but our bed wasn't made, which we thought was odd for a lodge of this price. The worst thing was on the day we left. When we arrived they used a buggy to take the cases to our room - quite a long way. We had told them that we were getting a water taxi at 8am, but when we left there was absolutely nobody about so we had to trundle/lug our cases along quite long gravel paths down to the jetty - took us about 10 mins! The water taxi guy was also annoyed as he had freight to drop off and was trying to raise them on the radio but they were all asleep! Not what you expect from a 4 star place.

Apart from the chair that was broken, the old sock under the bed, not enough coffee sachets for the four of us, mouse poo on the bench, and insect excrement in the cutlery container....oh and the broken toilet paper holder and if you think it's self contained take a sharp knife and a bottle opener. The fish and chips were fantastic, and the setting just magical! I have stayed here before and the place has gone down heaps. Needs someone who loves it to run it!

I don't understand people who complain about soap!
This place is stunning, with lovely rooms, great service, delicious food, and an all around terrific place to stay.
My only negative is that the meals are too large.
After a full day's walk from Ship Cove, how do people complain about spider webs on the verandah?? Get real!!!

Room Tip: Maybe be a little realistic!

This place is so over rated. Have stayed in the past closer to Picton at Lochmara Lodge and would now be returning to there.

Not only is this place over rated, I personally think and saw the cleaning staff obvously do not have any training. The place is tired, dirty, mildy in summer and smelly. Could be cold if you have no one to cuddle upto.

The meals and location are the only thing going for this place. If it did not have location they would have very little clientele. Poor service and over all run down.

We enjoyed our stay, liked the laid-back vibe here. But, all the windows and the door frames in our studio were covered in spider webs and spider carcasses -- the dead insect bodies literally lined the inner door frames when the door was opened. (The room interior was clean). By comparison, nowhere else we have stayed in NZ (almost all accommodation located in deep bush) has had this kind of dead insect problem -- and profusion of webs. It appears that housekeeping is also taking a holiday. Another gripe -- the deck chairs on the studio balcony badly need replacing.

My wife and I stayed at Furneaux Lodge for two nights while tramping the Queen Charlotte Track. We had booked a "suite" which was lovely. Clean, spacious with an outdoor patio next to a stream. The room was clean, the bed and linens were great. The only negative I could find would be there was not "soap bar" for those as I who don't like to use shower gel. So bring your own if that's your choice as well.

There restaurant had very good food with nice presentations on two separate occasions. The chef should be complemented.

With that said, the negatives would be the staff on all counts. We had to request our room to be cleaned at 3 pm and then the cleaning lady made some excuse as to why she hadn't cleaned it previously and only cleaned the bathroom. Leaving no shampoo or body wash this time. The bottles are so small, 2 people would easily use up these on one shower. We had to go down to the restaurant to get some more for our shower the next morning. The lady didn't even make our bed.
All of the staff seemed to be young summer workers between school semesters. The words "customer service" was not in their vocabulary. It is a shame, the owners whoever they are don't recognize this. It's had to miss the attitudes and ineptness of all of them. I would avoid this lodge if you have a choice while making your bookings for the QCT tramp.

Room Tip: Book another lodge if possible or expect an tired old worn out lodge aside from the "suites&quo...
