Emerald Coast Gites
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 3 August 2014

This was our third time staying in the Emerald Coast Gites and won't be our last. As a family with three young children (5,3 and 11 months) it is hard to find a holiday where both you and your children can enjoy as a family and as some quality time with your partner. Simon and Lesley the owners of the Emerald Coast Gites have certainly figured out how to do this and the result is a holiday for everyone, something very rare indeed. We have stayed in No 1,3 and 4 of the Gites and all are furnished to a very high standard and clean. Subtle touches such as the welcome pack and toiletries by the ever thoughtful Leslie really give the Gites that little bit extra that really makes the difference. The area around the Gites is completely secure and means that you can open the door and let the kids out to run wild and free safe in the knowledge that they can't go far. It is things such as this that you just don't find in other family friendly Gates. I suppose that is the ethos that Simon and Leslie are trying to achieve, their laid back and friendly attitude rubs off on you and by the end of our stay we where completely chilled out and de-stressed, surely the whole point of a holiday. Added to this is Leslie cooking, which is fantastic, most days there is a "Plat du Jour" cooked by Leslie which we have found is always great. So much so that we only had to cook for ourselves once during our stay, Leslie will deliver it over to the Gate at a time you want, which means you can get the little ones down and sit down to a nice meal with your better half. We found most nights we would head up to the bar onsite, the great thing is the baby monitors for the Gites work in the bar as all the gites are only a few yards from it. You can go down to bar and meet, socialise with the other residents and swap child raising war stories. So if you have young kids and want a family holiday that actually feels like a holiday go to Emerald Coast Gites.

Year 4 at emerald coast gites, and if you've read my previous reviews, we
dont do holidays without some kind of disaster! This year the challenge set
was the car breaking down (quite terminally) literally miles away from the
Gites. Yet again, Simon and Lesley sprang into action and what could have
been a complete nightmare for a family of 5 on holiday stuck on the motorway
in 30 degree heat merely became just a minor blip and the holiday continued
as if it never happened and we we werent a car down. we are still awaiting
the return of the car, all our belongings and 4 bikes, but thats purely down
to the inadequacy of the insurance company!

When we first visited Emerald Coast Gites all those years ago it was perfect
for our two 'little' children, and now with two big children (and one small
one) it is still the place to go. It has grown with our children and i have
no doubt will continue to do so, not only on site but also in the
surrounding areas. This year we enjoyed, windsurfing in Jugon, Go Karting,
Tree Climbing, Lazer Quest, bracelet making but to name a few, all within a
short drive distance, not forgetting to mention the body boarding and rock
pooling on the countless beaches.

Yes, this is an ideal location for young children, toddlers and babies, but
is proven to be ideal also for the older kids too! Young and old alike, its
not to be missed.

Next year, year 5, already booked, and cant wait!

We have just returned from two weeks at Emerald Coast Gites (Number 1, La Vieille Grange), and it was about as relaxing as a holiday with a one-year-old and a three-year-old is possible to be. The set-up is ideal for young children. The gites are arranged around a large play area with a slide, swings and see-saw, so children can just go out of the door in the morning to play and there is enough to occupy them for hours. There is another play area adjacent to this with a trampoline, slide and lots of ride-on toys. The soft play area in the terrace is also great. The whole site is lovely, with lots of flowers and trees (even the cats are very tolerant of toddlers!) The owners are very friendly and helpful (for example phoning a local stables to book horse-riding for me). The swimming pool is of a decent size, although a little on the cold side if you are not actually swimming. There is also a freezer stocked with ice-creams and children's meals, and a Plat du Jour service on most days which was delicious. We also enjoyed the cheese and wine evening.

The gites are located in beautiful countryside just outside the small village of Hénansal around 11km from the coast, so it does involve a bit of driving every day, but it is not far and traffic is light. There are many big and quiet sandy beaches in the area - we could have visited a different one every day. The Grand Randonée 34 (like the South West Coast Path in the UK) would provide ample opportunity to walk off the delicious pastries that are delivered to the gite six days a week, although we only managed to walk tiny bits of it due to whinging children.

My only minor criticisms: the wi-fi was unreliable. The website states that all gites have wi-fi, which in theory they do but due to the thickness of the walls it doesn't work very well and I only managed to connect to it once in the gite, and about 75% of the time in the terrace area. I was also a bit surprised that there was a 4 euro charge for using the two communal washing machines, as this also wasn't stated on the website or when I enquired about washing (all the similar UK properties we've stayed had their own washing machine).

Room Tip: No.1 La Vieille Grange is the closest to the bar which may be good if you want to use a baby monitor...

We stayed at emerald coast gites for the second time from 14th to 21st June in number 2 la vielle grange with our 2 year old and 1 year old. This time we came with 2 other families.

As before Lesley and Simon gave us a fantastic holiday. The gites have everything you need for young children and are ideally located next to the bar / soft play area and the grassed play area. As everything is enclosed, the children can safely enjoy playing with the wide variety of toys that are available.

Although we were self catering we once again enjoyed sampling the cheese and wine night and the various plat du jours.

We will definitely come again!

What an absolutely wonderful two weeks we had staying in the Pressoir! We all had a really great and relaxing time enjoying the wonderful company, facilities and surroundings. It was the first holiday since the arrival of our first daughter, that my husband and I felt we could unwind, which was fabulous! Our daughters had a great time because of all things for them to do and play with/on, as well as excellent suggestions for day trips. As our two daughters had such a good time it meant that the adults did too.

Add into the mix the fantastic plat du jour, bar, cheese and wine evenings and daily bread orders, not to forget the lovely tea party Leslie and Simon put on for our daughter's 4th birthday, Leslie and Simon and wonderful hosts just made the holiday so easy and enjoyable that we can't wait to go back!

there is much more to it than that, it's actually surprisingly good for adults too.
For children there are more sit on toys than you can shake a stick at; ball pens; play areas and space to play in. for adults and children there is a good sized swimming pool and a childrens pool with sun loungers - excellent. I think I also saw goal posts but as I don't really do sport I can't be sure. For adults there is a well equipped bar - what more can you possibly want? Ok. There is also a weekly cheese and wine party in the bar which was great fun and went on till late.
I suppose I should mention the gite as well although others have done it so well before me. Suffice to say they are very well equipped; spaceous; have outside space (lots); a bar b q; most everything really.
The location is great; near enough to a local village and towns but in a rural quiet setting.
I should also mention the stars of the show Lesley and Simon, they really are great, (except perhaps the morning after the cheese and wine party); Simon took us to the railway station the day we left and Lesley posted back two rabbits that had inadvertently been left behind by my daughter - she didn't really say write a good review or the rabbit gets it... They are seriously good hosts; always about; always helpful and always good fun.
I forgot to mention the trampoline (suitable for adults and children) and the table tennis table where two of us spent a lot of time.
If you have young children or grandchildren they will love it and you probably will too.

We visited last year and went back recently for 2 weeks with our 2 month old baby and nearly 3 year old daughter. My sister and her family were in the next door gite. We got the night ferry to St Malo which was fine (because the children slept, but I think could be a nightmare if not!) Lesley and Simon are exceptional hosts- they are always helpful, friendly, sociable and go out of their way to help you have a good holiday. The gites are nicely decorated and well maintained. The children's play areas outside and soft play, trampoline, and bikes were highlights for our toddler. We enjoyed the bar, especially cheese and wine nights and the delicious plat du jours cooked by Lesley. Even though the weather tended towards iffy we enjoyed the nearby beaches, cafes and historic towns. The swimming pool on site and collecting eggs from the chickens were other highlights. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Talk to Lesley about specific needs as the gites do vary.
