“Stunning setting, incredible experience, wonderful hosts!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 October 2009

We will never forget our stay here nor our wonderful hosts, Di and John. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer. This is one of those rare places that completely blows away even your highest expectations for it. Like others, we chose Los Castanos based on other great reviews here. As you approach the village from a winding offshoot from the scenic mountain highway, you're struck by the magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and Cartajima's neighboring white villages in the distance. Los Castanos sits on a high point in the village, and our mountain view room was on the second floor, giving us a spectacular views from our balcony, even from our bed! The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated too, with high ceilings and plenty of light.

If that weren't impressive enough, you won't believe what awaits you for dinner. Di is a superb chef and I would challenge you to find a better dining experience anywhere. If you like, you can start off by having a sherry or wine downstairs. John has put together a fantastic selection of Spanish sherries and wines. You can socialize with the other guests or sit off on your own, there's plenty of room. For dinner, again, you may sit at a table on your own or with other guests at a large table. We had so much fun meeting and conversing with Di and John and our fellow guests. The conversation was lively and the food delicious! After dinner, the rooftop terrace is the perfect setting to enjoy panoramic views while sipping a sherry, especially at night. The cool mountain air, the nearby lighted bell tower, and especially the night silence, create the perfect relaxing atmosphere.

If you're a walker, John has a collection of maps for various walking routes in the region. We spent the days strolling through the village or venturing out to nearby cities. Cartajima has a population of roughly 100 residents. The local people are very friendly, and the village has a nice restaurant where you can enjoy that truly authentic rural dining experience. The city of Ronda is just a few miles down the road and was a highlight of our trip. There are numerous historical sites there, and the natural beauty of the El Tajo Gorge is breathtaking.

Di and John, thank you for everything!

Escaping from the hustle of daily life for a week of relaxation, arriving at this wonderful hotel we were greeted by the fantastic hosts - Di and John - and were bowled over by the fantastic views. It was easy to spend hours up on the roof top terrace looking across the pan tiled roofs to the mountains beyond. The countryside around provided some great walks with excellent guidance from John on routes and things to look out for - a trip up to the Sierra de las Nieves is a must.
The room was beautiful, the food was excellent and the wine extremely drinkable! This is one of those gems that you find only very occasionally and as such should be treasured. We will definitely be back - everything about the hotel makes you want to stay.

This is a great small hotel with ample sized rooms with everything you need. The roof terrace is a great place to chill out in comfort and tranquility. We all enjoyed our stay and felt really comfortable and welcomed by the owners John and Di and the lovely dogs,cats....
Would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for something different and has a car available to them.

We visited in June for 4 days as part of an anniversary celebration. Los Castanos was a mid-trip respite from a hectic 3 week itinerary. We are well travelled and found the inn to be beautifully decorated and in a stunning setting. Our hosts, Di and John, were totally accomodating and welcoming. They were avaialble for touring suggestions and maps and good company- almost as if we were at a house party-We enjoyed meeting their friends as well. Breakfast was lovely with local fruits and Di's dinners were delicious. The roof deck was a perfect place to relax- it was hard to pull ourselves away from the inn to do some sightseeing. After our city intense travels, Los Castanos was perfect- away from the crowds. peacefull and beautiful. We could have settled in for a much longer stay had we not had unchangeable plans.

Travelled to Spain in May to celebrate a birthday. Spent a few nights in marbella and then drove to Cartajima and Los Castanos. What a wonderful contrast. This is a really special hotel. Every detail has been thought of by your host Di and John. Fresh local flowers in your wonderful room, fresh fruit, a selection of books and even candles and matches should you wish to sit out on your balcony after dark and just drink in the atmosphere. It may take a little time to get to Cartajima and the last few kilometers might be a bit challenging but its more than worth it. The views are to die for, the village an authentic pueblo blanco without the hoards of tourists, the food cooked by Di wonderful, the wine from a local vineyard sensational. Nothing is too much trouble for this lovely couple. They even arranged a visit to the local vineyard for us on our onward trip to Grandada. Would definately recommend a stay here.

We arrived in springtime to a staggeringly beautiful village, stumbling on and into the peaceful and wonderful oasis that is the hotel Los Castanos. What a creation Di!

Paul & I felt immediately at home and more like house guests with old friends than hotel guests. No request was too much trouble. We felt welcome, looked after and very cocooned from the stresses in our lives.

Dinner was a delight we eagerly anticipated all day, whether walking, exploring Seville & Ronda, or relaxing on the breathtakingly panoramic rooftop patio. Fabulous food & wine with the opportunity to mix with other interesting guests. Superb.

A completely relaxing holiday and we can't wait to return to the deceptive simplicity that was truly indulgent.

To Di & John, a big thank you from Jan & Paul.
