We will never forget our stay here nor our wonderful hosts, Di and John. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer. This is one of those rare places that completely blows away even your highest expectations for it. Like others, we chose Los Castanos based on other great reviews here. As you approach the village from a winding offshoot from the scenic mountain highway, you're struck by the magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and Cartajima's neighboring white villages in the distance. Los Castanos sits on a high point in the village, and our mountain view room was on the second floor, giving us a spectacular views from our balcony, even from our bed! The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated too, with high ceilings and plenty of light.
If that weren't impressive enough, you won't believe what awaits you for dinner. Di is a superb chef and I would challenge you to find a better dining experience anywhere. If you like, you can start off by having a sherry or wine downstairs. John has put together a fantastic selection of Spanish sherries and wines. You can socialize with the other guests or sit off on your own, there's plenty of room. For dinner, again, you may sit at a table on your own or with other guests at a large table. We had so much fun meeting and conversing with Di and John and our fellow guests. The conversation was lively and the food delicious! After dinner, the rooftop terrace is the perfect setting to enjoy panoramic views while sipping a sherry, especially at night. The cool mountain air, the nearby lighted bell tower, and especially the night silence, create the perfect relaxing atmosphere.
If you're a walker, John has a collection of maps for various walking routes in the region. We spent the days strolling through the village or venturing out to nearby cities. Cartajima has a population of roughly 100 residents. The local people are very friendly, and the village has a nice restaurant where you can enjoy that truly authentic rural dining experience. The city of Ronda is just a few miles down the road and was a highlight of our trip. There are numerous historical sites there, and the natural beauty of the El Tajo Gorge is breathtaking.
Di and John, thank you for everything!
