“Another pleasant stay”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

Returned to this hotel after a two year period and got the same room. Not much difference except an improved modern TV and a new armchair. Food and service the same good standard as previously, but no Cullen Skink on the menu when we stayed.

thank you for your review and you nice comments. the same room never stays exactly the same as you know; we are constantly upgrading and renewing things to keep the hotel the place you want to return to. we tend to do this work in the off season, so this spring all tvs were replaced by flat screens and single rooms were upgraded with leather sofa or arm chair. this winter we will replace the cream carpets that we put down a few years back; lovely but impractical so they have to go!
sorry there was no cullen skink this time. let me know when you next book and i will do my best to have it as a special for you.

many thanks,

eileen

Second visit here and once again we were greeted with a cheerful welcome and followed up with excellent service,
We were travelling as a motor club on a tour of Scotland and had booked our tables in advance,
Due to a couple of minor hold ups we arrived nearly an hour after our eta, but this didnt cause a problem to the staff ( well not that we knew anyway) we were swiftly served with impeccable efficiency but also with a friendly / personal service, no mean feat when 15+ people turn up and all want feeding and watering all together,
The food all arrived correctly and within minutes of the first plate being delivered, well presented, tasty food and excellent value too,
The hotel also benefits from being situated amongst some stunning scenery too,
We look forward to returning again on next years tour.

many thanks for your review and also for choosing to come back to the strathcarron hotel on you group road-trip. we have a lot of returning trade and it is always nice to when strangers grow into familiar faces, so we are hoping that you will indeed come back yet again on your next trips through our lovely countryside:)
when we are expecting a large group for lunch we make sue that everything is organised well so that not only do you get the same standard of food you would expect as a solo traveller but also that you get it promptly and without fuss. so i am pleased that everything went to plan despite your slight delay in arrival.
i hope the rest of your trip went well,
many thanks,
eileen

We were looking for lodging close to Attadale Gardens, for two nights and close to train stop. Like Attadale Gardens, this is the train stop. That made it our choice. But once we got there, we wanted to stay. The hotel is quaint, the surroundings are awesome, the service was excellent, the owners and staff were over-board hospitable; we weren't treated like tourists, but as guests. We were included; this is a hang-out for "locals," and they didn't treat us as intruders.
The food in the Pub was excellent, as were the breakfasts in the restaurant (part of the B&B plan.) The tea and biscuit tray in our room was restocked twice daily (we drink a lot of tea.)
We even got help with our travel plans to Skye, from Andrew and Eileen - the owners; gleaned from their own family trips, there. And, Oss, the bartender-par-excellent, taught us Scottish history and all about Scotch.
If we get back to Scotland, we will definitely go back to the Strathcarron Hotel!!

Room Tip: All the rooms that I saw were good!

Tasty food, good service and full of locals. An excellent example of a well kept Scottish hotel! The bar has fantastic character, you could spend hours looking at the collections of change and shinty memoirs around the place.

thank you very much for your lovely review. I am glad that you enjoyed your food and the general ambience of "The Strath" It is always good to hear of Skye folks coming in prusumable on the way home:) as to the photos, we still have a lot of shinty folk coming in after games etc and the photos are a great thing as many of them are very old and some of the current players can identify parents, grandparents and greats as well! a wee bit of local history.
we try our best on the upkeep of the building, for a property of this age it needs constant attention to make sure it never becomes tired looking. out latest upgrade was the new windows in the bar which now means a fantastic view from everywhere you look, makes us all appreciate what a wonderful part of the world we live in:) hopefully we will see you in gain when you are passing and that you continue to enjoy your visits:)

Firstly this solely my experience and 100% genuine.
This is a nice hotel and my room was for a single person....but was spotless clean with lovely clean sheets etc as you would expect .Only grumbles were the TV was a pain as it was difficult to set up ..perhaps these could be upgraded in the rooms as heard other people mention this too and the shower water pressure was quite low making a good shower difficult.
I had a chicken steak and it was nice had a lot worse ..it was as usual filled out on the plate with mixed lettuce which is the old trick of making the plate look full of food ..and I did ask for a gravy boat was told politely that they were too busy! Not really what I wanted to hear...but beef burgers looked nice too although I didn't try them.
All in all ....good location ,decent rooms ....recommend.

Room Tip: My room was at the front some minor noise from traffic and the train ..take those ear plugs just in...

thank you for taking the time to write your review and glad to hear that you found your room to be spotlessly clean, we pride ourselves on that and other things. however i do have to address some of the negative comments you have made.
As the chef i was the one who said no to your request for gravy; nothing on the menu come with additional gravy and to make proper gravy for you would have taken some time; we do not go in for the few spoons of bisto and some hot water malarkey, and as you would have been aware the night was excessively busy . the dish you ordered was char-grilled chicken and came with a very good salad; a variety of lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, cucumber, cress and parsley, hardly mixed lettuce filling out the plate! the salad is an integral and important part of this dish.personally i don't believe that gravy and salad mix and i am not wanting to be a food fascist but there is no way that i am putting a gravy boat out with a salad even if i had some of my lovely home made gravy available.you clearly did not want to hear that you could not get gravy but if that is what you wanted why not try the special which was wild venison stew that evening. it was slow cooked in a rich gravy and maybe would have suited your palate better.
as to the tv; i know you had to get staff to show you how to work the remote control and had a laugh with them about how silly you felt being an electrician and not being able to get it to work. the TVs are new flat screens with free sat; and people generally do not have a problem with them at all. the other gentleman that you were speaking to had accidentally knocked his scart cable which led to a colour change which was easily rectified.
the water pressure is what it is; showers are hot and plentiful.... and as to trains there are 6 a day at this time of year; less in the winter months and the last train passes here before 8pm ( at this time you were in the restaurant not getting your gravy! ) in fact you would not have even heard a train during your stay with us, so the suggestion of needing earplugs is a bit of an exaggeration. the road too is pretty quiet and i have never had people complain about road noise probably because in addition to the lack of vehicles at night, all of the rooms are double glazed.
you decided to rate us at a three which i think is a bit harsh given all the positive things that you had said and leads me to believe that it was all about the gravy!

I was in for dinner recently. There were different staff every night - all of them different characters - but there was a common denominator: I got the feeling that there wan't anything that they would not do for you if it were humanly possible. Friendly place indeed, with good beer on the pumps, good dinners (theyknow the right butcher if you eat meat - other options if you don't), and great chips on the side. If you are passing .... don't pass, go in!

what a lovely review and thanks you very much for taking the time to post it:) i am glad you enjoyed your stay and that the food was to your liking. we pride ourselves on our hospitality and the use of fresh local produce; your breakfast would have been cooked with ingredients that came from the outlying area to the hotel and so constitutes a real Scottish breakfast!
thanks again for your review and perhaps we will be able to welcome you back at some future time:)
