The girls and I took a last minute break up at Gerry’s hostel and stayed 3 nights, had a great time. Very nice location to get away from it all. Friendly and helpful owner, made us feel welcome, thanks for everything.
Great location but I certainly won’t be going back there. Initially the warden seemed reasonably ok as he showed us round. The hostel wasn’t the best as there was only one small, quite run down shower for a possible 20 people and worked by a dodgy looking generator, he informed us we would have to use a stool for one of the bunk beds as he had to remove the ladder due to wood worm and we couldn’t use one of the ovens as he hadn’t cleaned it after previous people had left it in a mess!! Over the 2 nights stay he constantly attended to the fire every 3o minutes or so but it felt he was checking up on us. It wasn’t the warmest of places either and it was a really cold weekend. He was quite rude to the 2 young ice climbers that were staying, calling their equipment rubbish and moaning that it was stinking out the drying room especially his clean washing!! As we were part of a club the weekend had been organised and the cost but the warden started to disagree about the cost on the Saturday night. He made us all feel very uncomfortable, muttering constantly and being quite hostile. This escalated on Sunday morning as everyone seemed to be making a quick escape but he asked for us to clean the hostel as we hadn’t paid properly despite accepting our payment the previous night and being informed he could invoice the club which he didn’t want to do. We certainly weren’t a rowdy bunch and had washed all our dishes and stripped our beds but we hadn’t made a mess of the place. As 4 of us were left he then targeted the other female club member stating he wanted her to put on rubber gloves and clean the hostel, she refused and he threatened to block us in, one of the male members stepped in as the warden tried to push past him to get to his car, looking back we should’ve called the police at this point. We all left after that but left myself a little shaken but more so the other female. I’d hate to think what would’ve happened if it had been just us 2 there!! The warden was certainly an odd character making everyone uncomfortable and making it a very negative weekend!!
What a nightmare, from start the custodian wouldn't leave us alone, constant badgering and checking up. Like a character from a horror B movie he muttered and stared creeping out the females and making everyone uncomfortable.
On coming to leave this vile man picked on one of the girls threatening and bullying to try and get her to clean the place. When this failed he threatened to block the expert. When I stepped in he started pushing, however when I stood up to him like any bully he backed down. Shame as I was ready to call the police.
If you are looking for an ideal location for loads of walks, a communicative, cosy atmosphere, a friendly if odd reception, this is the place. I have stayed at a lot of hostels. This is the best ever. There is plenty to do on a sunny day (more walking in the area than you could think), and on rainy days (ancient and not so ancient books, magazines, music, a piano,...) and there is talking to each other over the fire. Perfect, what more could you want. Shower is nice and hot, duvets are warm and more blankets are available. And, on a clear night, there are the stars....
I have to admit, if you are a cleanliness-fanatic, maybe this is not the place to stay, but it is surely clean enough for anyone else.

Stayed here with a group of 19 for a 'alternative' hen weekend (therefore we booked the whole place) on the first weekend in July 2016.
The place was clean with fresh bedding and the charming french gentlemen kept the fire topped up with logs both days we stayed. They were very helpful and accommodating.
The place could do with some improvements - replacing some mattresses, improvement to the shower/over bath shower/ kitchen needs updated to cater for 20. All that being said, we only paid approx £27 for 2 nights so the price reflects the above.
If you want somewhere clean & cosy with all the basic facilities Gerry's Hostel is your place!
