“Very Comfortable”
Reviewed 16 September 2013

We travelled to the Thracian Cliffs from Veliko Turnovo - we could not believe it would take 5 hours as suggested on our suggested route from Michelin - we already knew the route to Varna, which was very easy driving, but somehow if did take nearly five hours - the last few miles from Varna seemed to take ages, so would definitely fly direct to Varna next time.
I am not a golfer, and have never been tempted to become one - but I did envy the golfers out on the greens at this hotel, what fantastic views they must have had.
We had a one bedroom apartment, very comfortable and very spacious. The kitchen was well equipped, and if we had stayed for more than one night I might have been tempted to cook, or at least make breakfast. There is a supermarket on site for basic groceries. Wish I had taken some coffee to make use of the brand new coffee maker.
There was a washing machine too!
It was the delicious food that was the high point for me - probably the best meal we have had in Bulgaria, probably the most expensive too, but worth it, very friendly staff in the restaurant. My husband would love to go back with some golfing friends for a long weekend, I would be quite envious if I did not get to go back with them.

Everything in our stay was great. We booked a 3 bedroom apartment in Hillside village area of the resort.
The apartment:
was great, very clean and spacious, with 4 bathrooms and a large balcony (with a table of 6 and 2 sun beds). The kitchen was fully equipped, but if you have a small kid and you want to cook you should bring your own pots (the pots available are medium size and some frying pans). Also, if you need a blender, bring one. a washing machine and dishwasher were also available. We had a vacuum cleaner, an iron and ironing table, a dryer and a stand for drying your towels. Because the apartment has an owner (probably) different from the resort management, the cleaning service was not available (the towels and sheets were the same for the entire stay, we bought our own soap and toilet paper). It was not an issue as we knew what to expect.
The beach: we went only to Bendida which was very clean and quiet, even in the high peak (weekend during the season).
The service: we only interacted twice, first because the wi-fi was down and second because one of the boilers stopped working (in fact the light bulb was broken). Both times the staff was efficient and pleasant.
The pools: small and quiet, very nice (max 6 sun beds around one pool).
Children: it depends on what you are searching for. My kid (2 and a half years old) had a great time, but he is not so fond of crowds, music and organised entertainment. In front of the first row of villas in Hillside is a big lawn with a playground.
The restaurant, pub and spa: we didn't check those out so i cannot say. We had a lot of food in the fridge so we never ate out. We only took a stroll or tho around Balchik.

Room Tip: The Hillside residences offer a spectacular view on the golf course and sea.

The Thracian Cliffs resort is probably the best you kind find in Bulgaria. It offers 2 beautiful beaches and a magnificent gold. As far as the beaches are concerned, you have the choice between Bendida so called big beach which is accessible as well to external customers (with a fee) and Argata the so-called small beach which access is exclusive to the guests of the resort. The resort is on a very large surface and the transfers are done with small shuttles you get a few minutes after having called the reception. For the accommodation, there are two options, hill side which is rather far from the sea and the marina which is nearer. The restaurant serves good food and most probably you will appreciate the breakfast.

I came here with other 5 friends just for the beach, and got a cabana there (it's a shaded 4 pole structure). Usually the price for it is 150 leva + a 100 leva you'll have to spend in the restaurant (like a compulsory lunch), which we usually do (it's the 4th time we've ended up there). But if you just had a good breakfast as we did this time or you don't plan having the lunch on the beach, it's not worth considering it, as 100 leva is appx. 50 extra euro you'll have to pay just because. But this time, the reception staff told us that if we pay with our card, there's no need to pay the extra 100 leva. Well, surprise, surprise, we did end up having to pay those money at the end of the day. I don't know if this was a case of there staff not having a good command of the English language, or them not knowing their actual rules. While the reception girl we've talked to was not there anymore, one of here colleagues that was there the whole time said she didn't remember the conversation (basically lied to cover her co worker, as you could tell by just looking into her evasive eyes). What surprised us was that their manager didn't accepted responsibility for a mistake made by their staff, and ended up alienating 6 returning customers + their friends. A poor business decision, yet very much in line with their service skills.

I will also add that the conversation between the staff members / and between the beach manager and the staff were carried out in Bulgarian only, which I found to be extremely rude, as none of us was speaking Bulgarian, but English. Same goes for the cabana boy that took upon itself the liberty of making a comment (which also went unnoticed by his manager) about us not being there for the 4th time for sure, as we didn't know the rules (basically implying that we've lied about it).

I've always thought that stars in the hospitality business should be awarded not only based on amenities, but also on staff quality. This only proves my point - make no mistake about it, this is light years away of a 5 stars experience.

Not returning there anymore.

Too many reasons why this complex does not qualify for a 5* hotel, starting with an extraordinarily poor service. On the day of our arrival, we were told there were no two-bedroom apartments available, even though we had reserved those four months earlier. So we ended up accepting one-bedrooms instead. Those were adequate and large enough but not what we paid for !

They also spread us around this vast village/ complex instead of offering us apartments in the same villa or close by at least (we were three families in total, renting three apartments).

Pools were ice-cold and never cleaned.

There is only one small restaurant and one shop in the whole complex and this is simply not good enough. The restaurant gets crowded in the morning (during breakfast) and if you don't reserve for the evening meal, you risk starving or eating over-priced crisps from the only shop they have ! Not exactly spoiled for choice.

The same story goes for the beaches. There are only two close by (one very small) and if you don't reserve early (via reception) you end up without a sunbed or even a place on the beach because in the season these beaches are rather packed. Of course, nobody tells you that you have to reserve a sunbed; you have to guess or do what i do... tip someone for information..

The gym is very small but the Turkish steam-room and jacuzzi are not bad at all.

During the season the place is invaded by wasps which makes it impossible to eat outside and/or enjoy the amazing views this location offers.

Kids are going to get bored here because there is nothing for them to do...

On a positive note, apartments are furnished nicely, of a very good size and like i said the views are to die for !!! The golf course is great too, But this is not enough for a 5* rating really... I wouldn't never go back but at the same time i cant say i hated the place (just the staff)

The resort, its facilities and the scenery is probably one of the very best you will see on the continent. The apartment we stayed in Marina Village was very spacious, equipped with everything you might need, it even benefits from a balcony with a lovely view.
Thracian Cliffs is a large property with two private beaches, which can be accessed via the hotel courtesy transfer, if you need one just call the reception to send one in front of your apartment, alternatively if you are on the way to the reception you might catch it from there.
The resort consist of couple villages, each with nice swimming pool on three levels, if you do not enjoy the beach surely you will like the pool.
Spa: Not very big but lovely, designed in an oriental style and staff is friendly and nice.
Beach: The property has two nice sandy beaches, restaurant is available on the bigger one.
Restaurants: Me and my girlfriend were not impressed at all, the main restaurant is beautiful however service was awfully slow, the staff looked disorganized and failed to contribute for a good dinning experience. I tried the lamb which was well overpriced, meat was not tender as expected, average plate presentation and taste qualities. The beach restaurant has a very limited menu, I ordered the calamari, which were the worst I have ever tried so far.
Breakfast is good, reasonable variety.
Service: Unfortunately this beautiful property is spoiled by a mediocre service, certainly this is not expected when you pay nearly E200 in Bulgaria! The check in was quick, however lacked any personal touch, the man who dealt with us did not try to engage us in any sort of conversation or make us feel welcome in some sort of a special property. We were pointed out the location of the spa and the man restaurant as well as the opening hours of the breakfast but that was all. Surely such a huge property needs a much more thorough introduction. We asked if they had a map of the resort and we were given some basic black and wait paper lay out with location of the apartments, which did not provide any information of the resort neither it reflects the image of this establishment. The bell boy took us to the apartment but did not room us, neither explain how any of the facilities in the apartment work ( not his fault, clearly the management did not think rooming is necessary). Our accommodation for the night was lovely, sadly the initial excitement was quickly destroyed by the cleaning standards of the apartment. Without being picky in less than five minutes we noticed dead bug in the candle lantern on the table, ash from cigarette in one of the candle in the bathroom, lots of black long hair in the bathtub, steps of shoes on the floor in the bathroom and underneath the bed hasn't been cleaned for good couple of months. At one point we asked ourselves if the bed sheets were changed- luckily they were! When mentioning these shortfalls to reception team, they were surprised, most of the issues were rectified by housekeeping but probably some kind of follow up would have been a good idea.
Another shocking thing was that upon breakfast, when the waitress asked the breakfast chef what took him so long to replenish the scrambled eggs. To this question he replied to her in Bulgarian in front more than 15 guests that he does not take 1000lv salary and in such case he wouldn't bother or push himself.
The golf course looked fantastic as well as the resort, real pleasure just to have a walk around the property especially in the evening. Regretfully the ambition of this project is let down by obviously poor and not so professional management. With some deep organizational changes this can be one of the best resorts in Europe, hopefully the owners an the top managers wake up and realize the need for that.
If you are not a golfer, more than two days is enough in Thracian cliffs. Worth experiencing it but do not expect a five star service treatment.

I was nearly beaten by one of their incompetent, Bulgarian-only speaking security guards. I drove my car to the beach, although it is not permitted to, as we have a small 9-months old baby daughter and have lots of baggages to handle when going anywhere, but I was not going to leave it there. This really incompetent, nearly stupid, guard was incredibly aggressive as he didn't understood why I wanted to leave my car there for 5 minutes until I settle my family on the beach... AND Took me from MY HAND out of my car... This is completely unacceptable for a 5 star resort... The whole thing was somewhat resolved by his not-so-incompetent manager, but with no appologies from me nor my wife... Just unacceptable. Afterwards I notified the reception, but they didn't seem to care very much.

Management_TC, Manager at Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort, responded to this review, 22 August 2013
Dear guest! Thracian Cliffs is a highly secured Resort with extremely high standards to protect our owners and hotel guests. Therefore the path to the Beach has been declared not accessible for any vehicles, as on this extremely steep path accidents can happen. Also people are walking here on their way down to the Beach. As there is no parking space anyhow at the end of this path at all, cars are by default not allowed to go down. If you do this on purpose, Security is advised to react immediately, as others peoples health is in danger. Therefore we strongly recommend to you not to pass through the barrier again. If you need to go down to a Beach with your own car, you must look elsewhere.
