Sol Beach House Bali Benoa by Melia Hotels International

Reviewed 11 August 2009

I had read other people's reviews of Melia Benoa before we left for our stay there, whilst I agree with some of what others have said our overall experience was wonderful. The only real issue we had was the fruit juices. The bar does not use fresh juice and it does spoil the drink but do not let this put you off, drink the beer instead!

From the time we arrived to the day we left the staff could not do enough for you. Our first room was on the ground floor facing the restaurant, we asked to move and this was done quickly and easily the next day. We were on the blue all inclusive and although we considered upgrading to gold there was little to be gained by this, unless you want to spend all day on the internet or have your washing done. Blue is fine.

All of the rooms have air conditioning and this was very efficient, the bathrooms are a bit tired and need a bit of attention but who spends time in there anyway.

The meals were very good, there may not be as much choice as in other hotels we have stayed in but the variety and quality was excellent. The main restaurant is fine and if you do not want what is one the buffet then order from the a la carte, it is not a problem. The Italian is a welcome change, but remember you are in Bali not Milan! The selection is good and very well presented . Lunch at the pool bar is also very good with a varying selection every day and the meals set up in the evening on the beach were wonderful.

This is a small hotel and the grounds are very well kept and the beach, is a good place to sit. The pool sitting area is mainly in the shade, but this gives a choice if you have too much sun. We did not have any problems getting sun beds there are plenty to go round. The daily schedule of activities is there if you want it, we did a few things and had a great time, including a free massage. The evening entertainment is very good and varied, but be warned you will be encouraged to get up and dance when the performance ends.

Melia Benoa is outside the main resort area of Nusa Dua and access to the main road is difficult as there are no pavements. However you can walk to the Bali Collection shops along the beach path, it takes about 20 minutes or get a local taxi ( less than £1). if you use the hotel taxi it will cost you a lot more.

Do not be tempted to stay in the hotel for the duration of your trip, Bali is a wonderful place to see, ask the hotel to book you a car and driver for a day and set your own itinerary. We spent a wonderful day out with a driver, he was very informative and able to talk about the local area, the people and the history. Far better than an organised tour and all for less than £50 for the day ( for three of us!). I would not recommend hiring a car, Bali is swamped by mopeds and bikes, many look to be driven by very young children and they often have three or four people on board. Taxis really are the best way to get around, a trip back from Kuta ( about a 25k drive) only cost £3.50.

Got a great last minute deal and were very happy with the outcome! Me, my wife and 8 months old kid travelled from Singapore to spend 3 nights in Nusa Dua and 2 in Ubud. Two days before the trip we booked Melia Benoa using www.agoda.com and got a 50% last minute deal. We payed about 80 USD per night incl. breakfast and were not really sure what to expect. This is our review:

Service: Nothing less than you would expect by the friendly Balinese people. We managed to change room from a view over the noisy traffic close to the hotel, to a beautiful garden view room since we wanted a more quiet room for the baby. All personnel from receptionist to cleaning and restaurant staff took very good care of us at all time.

Setting: Lobby is in traditional Balinese open style and garden is very beautiful. We loved sitting in the restaurant for breakfast looking over the lush garden. The pool is not very big, but the people in it seemed to enjoy it much. The beach strip is very clean with good chairs, but do not expect a paradise beach in Bali. Rooms are spacious but a bit dated. Bathroom especially looks like something you would expect from a 70s luxury hotel. But it is clean!

Food: Breakfast is ok, but if I would pay full price all inclusice I would expect from a hotel in the tropics to have juices freshly squeezed instead of using concentrates mixed with water. This is a disappointing cost saver from the hotel. We did not try any other food since we took of to other restaurans nearby for dinner. I think that was a good choice.

Price: We are very pleased with Melia Benoa at our discounted last minute price, but I would never pay full price for all inclusive.

I stayed here with my husband for 10days.. We always use trip advisor for all our holidays and hotels... and this time we were lead right up the garden path.....

For the good points first:
Staff: The staff were just wonderful!!! Polite and very helpful and cheerful.
The Food: The breakfast, lunch time and evening buffets JUST YUMMY. Being a veggie its always a worry about the food, but it never was a worry. Good choice and fresh...
The hotel grounds are gorgeous. The flowers and wildlife were a pleasure to look at!!
The free shuttle bus to and from the Bali Collection.. A great outside shopping mall with fantastic resturants and atmosphere!!

Well short and sweet for the good points. Because thats the lot.

Now for the bad points:
The smell in the rooms...Disgusting... a mixture and damp and sewer... had to change from one stinky room to another. There was mould over the light shades, the headboards, the walls, the net curtains and the curtains... "it smelt that nice", we had a corckroach move in. Wasn't the only one we see during our stay.

The Beach:
The beach was lovely..till the tide went out. And it went out.. you could walk to Australia time you got to the sea. And it went out during the hottest part of the day. Just when you needed to cool off. The sunbeds are a issue.. seems you can book your sunbed by putting your towel or a book on it, and never bother turning up.. so the bests ones are taken and your lefted with the sunbeds out in the full sun beam. Ok if you can take the heat all day.

The Pool:
In the shade. Once again the towel and book came into force. So you can have full sun on the beach or complete shade by the pool.
Oh don't always bank on getting a towel, some people need 4 towels each???? (Not the hotels fault.)

The Italian Resturant:
Italian it isn't... it maybe Bali, but don't advertise it as a Italian... Because that it ain't

Drinks:
The fruit juice is gross... and spirit drinks way to strong and you never get two that tastes the same???.. Drink water or their local beer.

On a whole this place is a STINKY DUMP!!!!!
It was a holiday from hell, just like the ITV series.......
There are better hotels like Club Med.......

The Melia Benoa is a beautiful hotel which completely lived up to our expectations for our honeymoon. The facilites and amenities are spot on and rooms are spacious and well appointed. Food was absolutley delicious and there was so so much choice daily that it was hard not to overeat!!!
The evening entertainment was lively and it was very pleasent to sit sipping cocktails after dinner watching all of the dancing and enjoying the ambiance of the hotel. Each night dinner was themed and served either on the beach or in the Garden, so you could really enjoy the romantic setting.
We did go for the gold option and I have to say that I thought this was really good value for money, especially as all of your laundry was done daily and in fact the staff repaired a rip in my husband trousers without being asked too. A perfect example of going the extra mile!!
Air con - I have to mention this as everyone seems too - was brilliant!!!!!!! No complaints on this, the room was perfectly chilled when we returned from the beach - just what was needed to cool down.
One of the things I also really liked was the location as it was a quiet resort, but a short taxi ride away was Kuta which gives you fab nightlife options if you fancy a good night out!

One recommendation is that if you are looking for a tour guide contact the Sedana at suaragatrabali@yahoo.com. He was a great guy who was really knowlegeable about Bali and his trips were really good value for money.

My wife and i always use Trip Advisor as a first point of call with hotels and have never failed to find a great hotel on our travels until now. This is not a good hotel.
The hotel is situated on a bend on the main road that is busy, you don't hear the noise from the hotel but it is certainly a bit dangerous trying to walk that way into Nusa Dua (go along the beach) On arrival we were greeted and taken to reception and promptly booked in so far so good, we were then shown the room, on the lower floor it is very dark the lighting is non existent, lots of dark wood doesn't help. As soon as we walked into the room the smell of damp hit us, the view was that of a large wall of a building next door, the bathroom was even worse the smell of urine greeted us as soon as we opened the door. We complained and were offered a twin room on the second floor which looked out onto the gardens in the centre. Unfortunately the damp smell was in this room as well, the furniture, curtains & wardrobes just stank. No urine this time but we couldn't use the basin as the smell of the water was rank, i still don't why because the bath taps worked fine. So we had to wash, bath, shower, clean our teeth etc in the bath, which i would like to add is a sunken bath in a reccess access by two tiled steps that get as slippery as ice as the water has no where to go, it just sits there on the ledge and steps.
We also found cockroaches in the room, public wc's & Patio restaurant. We do have photo's of the above but i cannot download them for some reason at the minute.
Bars and resturants.
The drink's are ok except as previosly posted by others the juice if awful in soft drinks and cocktails. The italian restaurant is poor, food tastes though it is warmed up and the pizza's are crispy flat bread. Shame because the food in the other two restaurants is
actually quite good, especially the buffets they put on. Lot's of choice and cooked in front of you. Breakfast is good as well.
Beach & pool.
The beach is quite small and trying to get a decent sunbed is impossible unless you are all inclusive gold. The front row of sunbeds are reserved for all in gold, the others seem to be reserved by a towel, book etc at the crack of dawn but no one seem's to turn up.
There is also a volley ball pitch on the beach that has no boundaries other then your sunbed so you may be playing even if you didn't intend too. The tide also goes out in the early afternoon leaving you with a few rock pools. The pool is ok but the sunbeds are mostly in the shade.
Staff
The staff are friendly and helpful and i dont remember any of them being biased towards gold or blue members, if a guest made the effort with the staff they seem to remember that and make an effort with them.
Entertainment.
There is entertainment provided most evening's but you soon realise that it is the same people doing different things and it is quite poor. Certainly effort but the standard is poor. There are basic facilities on site, pool tables (chargeable) archery, gym, ping pong as well as water sports (chargeable). The Bali Colection is accessed by a free shuttle every hour where there are lots of shops and restaurants or you walk there along the beach, going past all the other hotels that you wished you had stayed at.
The guests staying there were a varied bunch, young, middle aged, elder, couples, groups, families, not too many young children though and from all corners of the globe.
Summary
This hotel is 2 star at the most and a poor one at that, this hotel needs a serious makeover and standards need to be raised in certain area's. We were very disappointed with our stay after spending a lot of money and hours getting there.

We stayed at the Melia Benoa for 16 days and had a great time after a horrendous journey with Qatar Airways.....the worlds 5 star airline...I dont think so! We arrived at the hotel just before midnight and after a quick check in we were grateful to make use of the 24 hour al a carte menu! Due to booking early with Hayes and Jarvis we received a complimentary upgrade to an executive gold room. This was without the gold all inclusive package but the room was spacious with modern furniture, a very comfortable bed, lcd tv etc etc and 2 bathrooms. Having stayed at the Melia Benoa I personally wouldnt recommend upgrading to the gold all inclusive package as the blue package is just fine. Ok you get your laundry done "for free", however if this is important to anyone, take a walk out of the hotel, turn right and there is a laundry service 50 yards away. We took a full case home of clean clothes and it cost about £6.00p!
The hotel has beautiful grounds which are a credit to the groundstaff. Overall the staff at the Melia are great and will do their utmost to accommodate you wherever possible.
The pool at the hotel is adequate and is a welcome relief from the sun.
The hotel has 3 restaurants. Breakfast and evening buffets can be found downstairs from the reception. The food overall in my opinion was very good. As good as any caribbean all inclusive hotels serve and probably with more variety.
There is also an Italian restaurant which serves reasonable food but you have to remember we are in Bali and not Italy!!
Clientele at the hotel was a mixture of brits, french, german and russian, chinese and south east asians as well as the odd loud mouthed french canadian! Yes you know who you are!!
Lunch is also available in either the beach restaurant or the al a carte. The beach restaurant was a buffet style and again had plenty of variety (except for tomato soup, which seemed to be the chef's favourite!)
The beach was fine although was full of shingle towards the sea.
The pool area was fine and seemed to have ample empty loungers. One point to note is the pool area is quite shaded in all areas. Towels are provided.
One downside of the hotel was the lack of decent entertainment in the lobby bar during the evenings.
A courtesy bus is also available every day which takes you to the Bali collection at Nusa Dua some 10 minutes away. This is a shopping centre and restaurant area undoubtedly created for the tourists however the quality of restaurants was very good.
We had a couple of trips out to Jimbaran Beach for the sunset seafood meals. I can highly recommend this area and the restaurants pick you up and drop you for free. The food was excellent.
We also did the 12 mile downhill mountain bike ride which I booked prior to arrival with balibike.com. This was an excellent day including breakfast and lunch for about £25 each! Fantastic!
One last note is Ive read about various travellers talking about the outdated aircon systems. This is being resolved as I speak and our room had a brand new very efficient system fitted.
I would also say that the pacificworld reps were a credit as well.
Overall a great stay at a fabulous smallish hotel. I would definately stay here again!

We stayed at the Melia Benoa for our honeymoon in June and it exceeded our expectations in every way. It was the first time that me and my husband had done all inclusive and we were very pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious and there was a wide variety available on each night. Also I do tend to suffer with a senstivie tummy, and was absolutely fine the whole holiday, which is testimony to how clean and fresh all the food is. We were on the normal all inclusive which meant we had a blue wrist band. When we checked in they tried to encourage you to upgrade to gold, but I would say that it really isn't worth it at $50 a day per person, as all you really get is imported spirits and room service. Local spirits are fine and you really don't spend that much time in your room as there is so much to see and do. One of the things that made the Melia Benoa such a joy was how friendly and kind the staff were, they really couldn't do enough for you during the stay. They definately embodied what we found from all the balinese people that we met, as being the kindest and most friendly race that we have ever met during our travels. When reading the reviews before we left we were a little perturbed by the comments about the entertainment, as we have always had preconceptions about what in hotel entertainment would be, however the entertainment was absolutely excellent and a great way to see traditional dance and also the caberet on Tuesday and Thursday nights are a must for the fun factor. Be careful however as they will try and get you to dance with them as the end of the shows. The hotel is really well situated for getting about the island, which if visiting you really must try to do. We managed to get around quite a bit and see what a beautiful island it it. If limited with time and money I would recommend the elephant safari in Ubud which takes you through the jungle where we saw monkeys and all sorts of widlife. They take you through a local village, seeing temples and rice paddies. We were lucky to have a great guide/elephant handler who talked us through balinese life and was a very special insight into the unspoilt nature. I have never left a review of a hotel before, best intentions are always forgotten once back home, but this hotel was so fantastic I have forced myself to do one so that other travellers can experience such a fab holiday. Please don't worry about the negative comments, they are clearly crazy and have strange priorities if all they can talk about is the quality of the bar's watered down fruit juices when compared too all the beautiful things there is to talk about. Melia Benoa is a must and so is Bali!!
