“Excellent Resort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 September 2009

We spent 5 days at this all inclusive resort and took the blue all inclusive package. As we checked in, we were met with welcome drinks and two Balinese dancers welcoming us. Check-in - was efficient and quick.

Food
There are 2 main restaurants - both are good, with different menus each day (except breakfas) so it does not get boring.
Drinks are good

Beach/Watersports
The beach is not the nicest beach in Bali but it was still fun to swin in and do a host of water sport activities such as jet skiing, parasailing, etc. Make sure you bargain hard against what you see as the listed price - we paid $25 for jet skiing and parasailing but they were listed as $35/each in the brochure

Tours
We took about 10 sightseeing brochures from the airport as we landed. We then took this to the hotel travel director and negotiate the same prices (or better) as the brochures but with a private car and driver - his name was Panji - excellent English and will take you everywhere you want to go. his number is [--]. make sure you negotiate hard.

Spa
There's a good place right across the resort (next to the 7/11) - much more reasonably priced - again, you can negotiate to get a better deal!

Places We Went
We took tours to Ubud, Jimbaran Bay, Uwatu, Mt. Batur and Lake Batur and we took a submarine to see the coral reefs and fish at 100 feet below!

All in all, this is a great resort - good bang for your buck.

This is my first review on trip advisor although I always read it to get the lowdown. I have been driven to provide a review just to counter the ridiculous negative review offered by some. Totally unrealistic and bearing no resemblance the the paradise we found,

Negative points - NONE!!

STAFF
Absolutely wonderful throughout the whole 2 weeks of our stay. Always attentive and curteous - nothing was too much trouble and their welcoming and tolerant attitude (typically Balinese) was exceptional. Agustini met us with a smile every time we saw her, as did most staff. Willing to accommodate all our requests and see to our needs they could not have been better,

ROOM
(Gold executive suite) Yes, dark wood furniture and low level of lighting - but isn't this typically Balinese? Bali is still a developing country don't forget. Neither was a problem. In fact the room was fantastic - our own lounge and television, mini bar (constantly restocked - soft drinks, water and chocolate), bathroom and separate toilet, excellent air conditioning, overlooking the fantastic gardens. Superb.

FOOD
We deliberately upgraded to gold so that we could have more choice during a 2 week stay and I am glad we did. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the buffets and if you are not worried about having extra choice then stick with blue. However, we had quite a range of additional choice and had several 3 course meals in both the A la carte and Italian restaurants. The Italian restaurant food was superb and my wine glass was continuously refilled. Try the scallops wrapped in bacon for a starter and the tenderloin of beef was the biggest I have ever eaten - and delicious. Buffet breakfast was great and lunch more than adequate, In fact I don't think I could have eaten any more than I did.

GOLD
I've already mentioned the advantage of having extra eating choices but the real benefit was the free laundry. 8 items per day between us meant we had most of our washing done whil we were ther and came home for the first time with little to do. Collected each day at about 8 a.m. it was delivered back to us wrapped in batik cloth and placed in a bamboo basket by early afternoon each day.

BEACH
Yes the tide went out a long way, but surely even the most intellectually challenged guests recognise that the time of the tide changes each day - don't they? It caused us no problems at all. We were gold all inclusive but never reserved a bed and never needed to. We always had a choice. When the tide was out we went for walks through the rock pools and watched the locals fishing for their living and evening meals - fascinating.

All in all this was a superb and relaxing break. If you want a five star hotel that is equal to those in Hong Kong and Singapore then go there instead - this is Bali, and 5 star means something different, not worse. Cockroaches? The hotels in Bali are sprayed nightly to kill insects, but this IS a tropical island, so you are bound to get the occasional ones. Never in our room! But hen, we followed the hotel advice and kept the balcony door closed (many guests didn't).

Ignore the intensely negative reviews below - some people just love to moan and I simply can't believe we stayed at the same hotel. (In case you think we are not used to 5 class hotels and are easily pleased you couldn't be more wrong.)

Thanks Melia Benoa!

Hotel grounds were beautiful.
Room (executive suite) was clean and spacious. Air con was good - but much too loud.
Good amenities in room. Our pool side room could be noisy in the morning as the pool opened at 6AM!
Most staff were very good. Occasionally though, service was somewhat lacking.
Laundry service was excellent.
Food was not varied and we struggled especially after the first week. It all seemed well cooked though. Neither I nor my wife suffered with stomach problems.
Travelling inland from ANY of the hotels in Nusa Dua was arduous.
The beachfront was ok (perhaps a little drab), BUT, when the tide went out, the sea disappeared and no swimming (or cooling off) was possible. Swimming in the sea was confined to a very small area (to allow jet skis and boats free reign).
This is the same for all hotels in Nusa Dua I think.
There were NO fish in the sea. There was no coral. If snorkelling is your thing, you have to hire a boat to take you out over the reef. This is not cheap - and if you are not a confident swimmer, I think you would probably not want to jump out of a boat into deep water with rolling waves...

I had read other people's reviews of Melia Benoa before we left for our stay there, whilst I agree with some of what others have said our overall experience was wonderful. The only real issue we had was the fruit juices. The bar does not use fresh juice and it does spoil the drink but do not let this put you off, drink the beer instead!

From the time we arrived to the day we left the staff could not do enough for you. Our first room was on the ground floor facing the restaurant, we asked to move and this was done quickly and easily the next day. We were on the blue all inclusive and although we considered upgrading to gold there was little to be gained by this, unless you want to spend all day on the internet or have your washing done. Blue is fine.

All of the rooms have air conditioning and this was very efficient, the bathrooms are a bit tired and need a bit of attention but who spends time in there anyway.

The meals were very good, there may not be as much choice as in other hotels we have stayed in but the variety and quality was excellent. The main restaurant is fine and if you do not want what is one the buffet then order from the a la carte, it is not a problem. The Italian is a welcome change, but remember you are in Bali not Milan! The selection is good and very well presented . Lunch at the pool bar is also very good with a varying selection every day and the meals set up in the evening on the beach were wonderful.

This is a small hotel and the grounds are very well kept and the beach, is a good place to sit. The pool sitting area is mainly in the shade, but this gives a choice if you have too much sun. We did not have any problems getting sun beds there are plenty to go round. The daily schedule of activities is there if you want it, we did a few things and had a great time, including a free massage. The evening entertainment is very good and varied, but be warned you will be encouraged to get up and dance when the performance ends.

Melia Benoa is outside the main resort area of Nusa Dua and access to the main road is difficult as there are no pavements. However you can walk to the Bali Collection shops along the beach path, it takes about 20 minutes or get a local taxi ( less than £1). if you use the hotel taxi it will cost you a lot more.

Do not be tempted to stay in the hotel for the duration of your trip, Bali is a wonderful place to see, ask the hotel to book you a car and driver for a day and set your own itinerary. We spent a wonderful day out with a driver, he was very informative and able to talk about the local area, the people and the history. Far better than an organised tour and all for less than £50 for the day ( for three of us!). I would not recommend hiring a car, Bali is swamped by mopeds and bikes, many look to be driven by very young children and they often have three or four people on board. Taxis really are the best way to get around, a trip back from Kuta ( about a 25k drive) only cost £3.50.

Got a great last minute deal and were very happy with the outcome! Me, my wife and 8 months old kid travelled from Singapore to spend 3 nights in Nusa Dua and 2 in Ubud. Two days before the trip we booked Melia Benoa using www.agoda.com and got a 50% last minute deal. We payed about 80 USD per night incl. breakfast and were not really sure what to expect. This is our review:

Service: Nothing less than you would expect by the friendly Balinese people. We managed to change room from a view over the noisy traffic close to the hotel, to a beautiful garden view room since we wanted a more quiet room for the baby. All personnel from receptionist to cleaning and restaurant staff took very good care of us at all time.

Setting: Lobby is in traditional Balinese open style and garden is very beautiful. We loved sitting in the restaurant for breakfast looking over the lush garden. The pool is not very big, but the people in it seemed to enjoy it much. The beach strip is very clean with good chairs, but do not expect a paradise beach in Bali. Rooms are spacious but a bit dated. Bathroom especially looks like something you would expect from a 70s luxury hotel. But it is clean!

Food: Breakfast is ok, but if I would pay full price all inclusice I would expect from a hotel in the tropics to have juices freshly squeezed instead of using concentrates mixed with water. This is a disappointing cost saver from the hotel. We did not try any other food since we took of to other restaurans nearby for dinner. I think that was a good choice.

Price: We are very pleased with Melia Benoa at our discounted last minute price, but I would never pay full price for all inclusive.

I stayed here with my husband for 10days.. We always use trip advisor for all our holidays and hotels... and this time we were lead right up the garden path.....

For the good points first:
Staff: The staff were just wonderful!!! Polite and very helpful and cheerful.
The Food: The breakfast, lunch time and evening buffets JUST YUMMY. Being a veggie its always a worry about the food, but it never was a worry. Good choice and fresh...
The hotel grounds are gorgeous. The flowers and wildlife were a pleasure to look at!!
The free shuttle bus to and from the Bali Collection.. A great outside shopping mall with fantastic resturants and atmosphere!!

Well short and sweet for the good points. Because thats the lot.

Now for the bad points:
The smell in the rooms...Disgusting... a mixture and damp and sewer... had to change from one stinky room to another. There was mould over the light shades, the headboards, the walls, the net curtains and the curtains... "it smelt that nice", we had a corckroach move in. Wasn't the only one we see during our stay.

The Beach:
The beach was lovely..till the tide went out. And it went out.. you could walk to Australia time you got to the sea. And it went out during the hottest part of the day. Just when you needed to cool off. The sunbeds are a issue.. seems you can book your sunbed by putting your towel or a book on it, and never bother turning up.. so the bests ones are taken and your lefted with the sunbeds out in the full sun beam. Ok if you can take the heat all day.

The Pool:
In the shade. Once again the towel and book came into force. So you can have full sun on the beach or complete shade by the pool.
Oh don't always bank on getting a towel, some people need 4 towels each???? (Not the hotels fault.)

The Italian Resturant:
Italian it isn't... it maybe Bali, but don't advertise it as a Italian... Because that it ain't

Drinks:
The fruit juice is gross... and spirit drinks way to strong and you never get two that tastes the same???.. Drink water or their local beer.

On a whole this place is a STINKY DUMP!!!!!
It was a holiday from hell, just like the ITV series.......
There are better hotels like Club Med.......
