Dear new reader,

my experience with trip advisor over the past 2 years as i've been travelling round the world has been varied. Essentially, its good for basics, but please interpret reviews - even mine. You don't know if you go for yourself. I'm starting off with this caveat because i've just had a quick look at some of the other reviews online, some negative. Its my view (and also my tertiary education in services marketing at UNE) that bad experiences provoke a bigger reaction than someone that enjoyed there time; its referred as the jaded affect. That why you can youtube 911 calls about a women trying to get police to come to McDonald's in Ohio because they got her order wrong. Seriously - go look it up.

Basically these people you can never satisfy, particularly the arrogant ones that i've been reading here. MY experience though was delightful - and here's the catch....i didn't stay there.

My mother had her 50th birthday at the aston. I am her son living in london and got in touch with the aston reception to arrange flowers to give to her on the morning with a card to say happy birthday. There was a little lost in translation through the emails, but that fine. I could tell they GENUINELY wanted to help me out. This was back up when I spoke to my mother about her time there - unforgettable is the word she used.

You may be thinking why am I writing this? I just wanted to give the Aston a shout out for doing such a great job with arranging my flowers AND with organising her birthday. Unlike a lot of people staying at 5 Star hotels, my family don't sit in the upper class and don't do this often....if at all. So it was very nice.

Thanks guys for doing a bang up job! And my mum will be on here positing her response soon. I'll remind her though....she is 50 now after all!!!

Cheers,

Murray.

Dear Murray

wow, what a great review and story! Your mother had a great time here and what better place to enjoy a birthday. Would have been perfect if you and the whole family could be here to smother her with love. Lucky she got that message from the flowers you organised! Well done. I am happy that we could be of service and hope to spoil you on your birthday some day in Bali!

regards

We stayed here with our 3 small children for 5 nights and really enjoyed it overall. Nice pool, right on the beach, great restaurants right outside that are reasonably priced, and very friendly staff. I don't know where people are reading that this is a 5-star resort...I haven't seen that claimed but to me it seems like more of a 4-star hotel. The rooms have both a bath and shower, although the bath-tub isn't a "garden-style tub" with jets, just a regular bath-tub (though big and roomy). And the water doesn't get all that hot. Our sink didn't drain properly and they sent a maintenance guy up right when we got there...still it continued to give us problems. Our bed was ginormous...almost too big! Still no fitted sheets, and like most hotels that use flat sheets on the mattress, you wake up in the middle of the night wrapped up in bed sheets. I was glad to get back in my own bed. They also don't provide wash cloths, which seems very odd for a hotel like this.

It was VERY windy and downright cold at the pool when we went. The pool is not protected at all from the beach, which at first was kind of cool ("The pool's right next to the beach!") but then became annoying because of all the wind. If we came back here we definitely would NOT come back in the dry season because of all the easterly winds (15-18 knots, and it's just as bad in the morning). Also for us, the beach was not the kind our kids like to play in because it is so steeply sloped into the water (at least during high tide). Ironically, we liked the beach over in Seminyak much better, despite the massive waves, because it's a much flatter, gradual dropoff, allowing our kids to play in the surf. They couldn't really do that here, unless we walked out to the sandbar during the low tide (which we did and the kids had a great time). You couldn't really just sit on the beach chairs and let your little ones play in the surf, because the chairs were up "high" and the beach then dropped steeply into the water...hope that makes sense. Overall the beach here was just OK.

Dear packgrad2000

thank you for your detailed review of your stay at Aston Bali in July. It is true that this time of year the winds come from a different direction and so it feels cooler than some other months. However many people love the early morning breezes while they enjoy the sun rise and the fresh feeling that can be felt even while the temperature is still hot under the sun. Glad your family enjoyed the stay and we do hope to be of service again soon.

As compared to the rest of the Bali places I've stayed, the rooms weren't as clean as they could be. There was also construction going on along the beach, and the resort meaning throughout the day either you could hear workmen drilling or an excavator moving sand, both which we weren't aware of before arrival.
Also being in a hotel style with hundreds of rooms, we were kept awake at night by kids running and yelling up and down the corridors - the rooms had very poor soundproofing.
The location in Nusa Dua also wasn't that great - bit in the middle of nowhere.
Dinner selection was good though - several different restaurants within the resort to choose from with different cuisines.
We also ordered an extra rollaway bed, which they only delivered after checkout, meaning we had to wait in the room for about 40 mins for housekeeping to arrive.

Dear RosalieSyd

Thank you for your review and I hope you enjoyed your escape from winter in Sydney! It is great to hear you enjoyed the restaurants here. Giorgios Italian continues to get busier each day with many guests from here and other resorts enjoying the atmosphere and great food there. Noted on your comments about the beach and gym project. The beach work was being done on the southern most part of our large beach by the local government. They are finished now with just a small 'bale' or traditional hut to be erected soon so all is ready for a great time on the beach. Perfect to watch the gorgeous sunrise each day. We did need to replace a wall on the outside of the fitness centre and the new glass wall is going up this week, so the noisy work is also finished there. All in all we are doing our bit to refresh and improve the resort to delight all our guests. Our location is a bit more quiet than the bustling Kuta area of course, but our free shuttle bus goes daily for those who need a shopping and entertainment fix. Hope to see you again soon in Bali.

warm regards

robert

On March 1, 2011 I booked a mystery deal through Wotif.com and got a good price on a suite with a king size bed. We arrived at the hotel at midnight on 18 July and were told that they did not have the room we booked and would not have it for two more days. They could give us a similar room with twin beds but we were there to celebrate our anniversary and that was not good. We would have had to spend our anniversary in separate beds. I phoned Wotif and they worked for two days to move us and they were able to get us a room at the Nusa Dua Beach Resort & Spa. We moved over to the Nusa Dua on the 20th.

The Aston Bali claims to be a 5 star resort but I have to agree with some of the other reviews that it is more 3.5 star. It is in desperate need of renovation. The paint is peeling off the walls and furniture. Our small sofa did not have a back so you had to lean against the wall if you wanted to watch the television in the lounge room. It is much smaller than the pictures make you think. They did not supply wash cloths for the bath or shower. I have never stayed in a 5 star resort that did not supply them. We rang reception to request an adapter which was never delivered by them. We ended up getting one from the room cleaner who just happened to have one on him.

As were were checking out, the Murdoch family from New Zealand was having major problems getting the rooms that they had booked as they were not available. I have received permission from the Murdochs to use their name in this review. During the check out process one of the staff members told us that we would have to pay for the rest of our stay and I told them that would not happen.

I must end by commending Wotif on working for two days to get us moved. They turned our nightmare holiday into a dream one.

Dear bkcPerth

I am grateful that you have taken the time to write about your experiences here in Bali but of course wish that you had been more happily settled with us. We did experience an issue with the king bedded room as you have reported and I am sorry that the prospect of a twin bedded room was disappointing to you for your special anniversary. Wotif of course are very professional and I am happy you felt they took great care of you during the rest of your stay in Bali. The Murdoch family did settle in nicely thank you for your concern on their behalf. We do hope you both have many more anniversaries to celebrate and we wish you all the best from Bali.

regards

Robert

We loved this hotel it is located in Benoa a quieter part of Bali... that appeals to us.. the Hotel has its own restaurants and we ate at them ... the highlight is there gorgeous Spa located near the pool... so beautiful and your treated like royalty when you visit them there.. the prices are very cheap.... and your can escape to heaven for a few hours.. The swimming pool has activities each day... I did the water ones with the instructor each day to music it was great ...
They have a shuttle Bus that can take you to the main part of Bali .. Kuta each day about times on a return trip you pick your times there and back and it is free.. plus there is another local shuttle bus that takes you around Benoa...
There are lots of local restaurants straight across the road we found really delightful.. if your after a really great holiday and stay ... you will love the Aston.. the rooms were large and so beautifully decorated with quite a large marble bathroom with separate shower and spa bath....

This is our third stay at the Aston!
We had an Aston Bali wedding and it was just magical! Leony and her team are just fantastic! All of the staff at thr Aston are amazing, they are all friendly and helpful! Our Wedding day was so so so much more then we ever expected it was relaxed and went so smoothly it was just magical!
We had our ceremony on the beach and our reception in the grounds of the Aston! We were so happy with everything!
We will be back to the Aston and I know that most of our 60 wedding guests will be as well! We strongly recommend the Aston for a holiday and even more so as a place to marry your best friend! :)
