“Good but...”
Reviewed 20 June 2012

We have just returned from our first trip to Bali, we were two couples that stayed at this hotel. We really enjoyed our stay here. The staff were so friendly and the location is good if you are looking for a relaxing holiday. The rooms are spacious and well laid out, we paid a bit more for a seaview room and it was worth it. We spent most of our time around the pool and on the beach, the pool is always clean and well kept. The beach is not that great, the water is not really for swimming.
The down sides were that rooms were not cleaned properly,I had spiders and spiderwebs between the bed & the bedside table (I only noticed this the last night when I dropped something between the two things). Our friends said that they also felt the cleaning was a bit messy, their bath was never cleaned in the 10 days we stayed there.
Some of our sheets had coffee and other stains on them.We also noticed that the last few nights or sheets were not being changed anymore.
The waiters at the breakfast were slow to remove dirty plates, and the tables were always half set, with either forks or knives missing, at times both, that we then had to get from tables next to us.
We found Bali very expensive, and most of the places we ate at were just ok, nothing great. We ate at Jimbaran one night, lots of restaurants to pick from on the beach, the setting was amazing, however the seafood was way overpriced and tasted terrible, we were all very disappointed and angry about how we had been done in at Jimbaran.
Shopping at Discovery mall is good, but again-it's very expensive, we picked up one or two bargains but that was about it.
Make sure to get a massage we found it very cheap and it was well worth it.
All in all we had a good holiday but found that Bali was just too expensive.

Room Tip: Pay a bit more and get a seaview room-it's worth it.

My partner and I have recently returned from a wonderful 10 night stay at this hotel. This was our first trip to Bali and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

This hotel is great. It is in the quieter area of Bali, however there are plenty of shops, restaraunts, laundry facilities, day spas and convenience stores near by. It is also next door to an Aussie bar in case you need to get your sports tv fix while you are away.

We were not able to get a room upgrade, so effectively we were probably in one of the worst rooms of the hotel. However, this did not matter at all as the room was fantastic. The room had a huge bed (probably super king), a balcony and a big bath. We had a bit of a view of the ocean from our balcony. This room was serviced daily and we got two bottles of water for brushing our teeth daily to.

The breakfast is amazing. It would be the best hotel \breakfast I have ever had in all my travels. There is the works at breakfast - continental, cooked, asian and heaps of fruit and juice.

The restaurant food is nice, but is definitely more pricier than the local restaurants where you can get a nice meal for NZ$10. We did eat at one of the restaurants for their themed night on the Bali themed night. The meal was an amazing seafood dinner which was super yummy.

The hotel has good facilities and the highlight would have to be the pool. It is truely huge, has different depths, has a waterfall and a volleyball net.

We only had a couple of lowlights which was due to the fact that the hotel advertises a daily "village tour" and other daily activities. We enquired every day of our stay as to whether the village tour was going to take place. Unfortunately we were told that the "daily" tour would not go ahead until after we left. We also did not see any of the other "daily" activities going ahead during our stay.

One thing that you should know before you travel to Bali is that it is very likely that you will be harrassed frequently to purchase items like taxis, tours, watersports, restaurant food, massages and hairbraiding. Unfortunately, you are not immune from the harrassesment at the hotel, however it is definitely not as bad as what happens on the street.

Also, the beach is very disappointing. The water is shallow, murky and not very suitable for swimming.

However, despite all this, we had the holiday of a lifetime and we would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone interested in a luxury, relaxing holiday.

Located in quiet area with a quite a few restaurants, some excellent, massage shops and mini markets. Aussie sports bar next door. Free hotel shuttle to Discovery in Kuta and Bali Collection.
Spotlessly clean throughout, rooms large and practical with big flatscreen tv with about 40 channels - a lot in English.
We arrived just after midnight and the room had a poor view of the sea. They changed it to 332 which had fabulous view of pool area and sea from the balcony. Other reviewers have noted the friendly staff - and it helped make this (once top of the range 5*) into a relaxing comfortable stay. There was a good mix of people there kids to granparents and all inbetween.
Breakfast excellent - huge variety.
The prices of beer/drinks/snacks/meals are about double that outside - but still cheaper than western city shops. The Italian restaurant - part of hotel is brilliant.
Hint: in the bar fridge there is no ice tray provided. We'll take one with us next time.

Room Tip: The higher numbers i.e. 332 is closer to the beach - therefore better view than say 311.

This was our first trip to Bali as what we were looking for was an easy, cheap, and sunny relaxing break. We booked a great value package deal on Expedia and were very pleased with the Aston. You really feel the difference between a hotel and a resort in a place like this.
The pool, staff, and buffet breakfasts were particularly good. Nothing like having happy hour cocktails brought to you on the private beach! On check-in, along with a complimentary juice, we were given a discount voucher to the spa and both enjoyed massages at good rates. Of course on-site food, drinks and services are dearer than outside, but the quality and convenience justified everything here, and still much cheaper than at home.
Kuta was not a place I'd want to stay in, yet only $7 by taxi when we returned late, or you can book the Aston's free shuttle service which we used on other occasions. On-the-beach dining there is a must.
Our room didn't have a view as it was part of a discount package, but it was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed and we didn't spend much time there during the day. One problem with a blocked toilet was fixed immediately.
The reception/bar area has free wi-fi which was easy to access and use.
Outside there are many restaurants, convenience stores and some souvenir shops, and we enjoyed dining at a couple of these resaurants. There's no hassles on the private beach, although the low tide means swimming is restricted. Its kept clean by staff daily. Jet skiing there was also fun. What I loved is their "no reservations" policy for sun lounges meaning you can't put a towel on one at 6am only to use it at 3pm - good on you Aston!
We walked along the beachfront path and saw several similar resorts, but we were very happy with choosing the Aston, and I would stay there again if returning to Bali.

Room Tip: If you're not going to spend a lot of time in your room, the cheaper ones without water views ar...

Returned yesterday from seven nights at the Aston on our 6th trip to Bali. I was surprised at the
cost of food and drinks everywhere in Benoa. Old Bali hands have always told us that Seminyak (where we usually stay) is very expensive but Benoa is much much more expensive and the quality of dining is poor compared to Seminyak.
The staff at the Aston were great, very friendly and helpful but the room cleaners didn't leave washcloths most days, there were never any handtowels in the 2nd toilet (although strangely they left washcloths in here) and the quality of the bath towels varied from great to dreadful.
Breakfast was great, lots of variety and staff here were fantastic too. Drinks were very overpriced at 'By the C' bar and there was never enough ice in the cocktails.
We stayed in room 498, the room decor was very tired, water pressure was dreadful making the shower unbearably hot for me (I had to sit on the floor of the shower to wash my hair as the water was a little cooler down there), a lot of the light switches were broken and taped over with duct tape, the smell inside the wardrobe was quite unpleasant. The furniture was very uncomfortable, there was a sofa to sit on but the dining chairs and the balcony furniture was dreadful, more comfortable to sit on the floor! We travelled in a group and our party had three different room types, all 3 had horrible hard furniture so there was not one room where the 6 of us could relax and chat in privacy and comfort.
Of the 3 couples in our party we were the only ones who had the soft sofa - this was extremely fortunate for us as the mattress was so hard that my husband had to take the cushions off the sofa and put them on the bed as his back was so painful after 2 nights that he could barely walk. Hardly romantic when your husband is perched 10cm above you on the other side of the bed, LOL.
They left fruit in our room in the evening which was a nice touch but how can one eat a passionfruit without a knife to cut its hard skin?
All in all this hotel is not worth what they charge for rooms, I have stayed in much fancier, cheaper places in Bali but the staff who are so lovely and the quiet location almost make up for it.

If you want to get away from the bustle of Kuta try this hotel in Nusa Dua. Still an east taxi ride to Kuta but a lot more serene. Great views of the beach from the room and loads of friendly staff on hand to assist you.
The rooms are a bit dated but can add to the atmosphere.
Beach traders are respectful and amazingly talented so have a good look at whats on offer and you will find your way past the usual t shirts watches etc and discover some great local talent.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the ground floor close to the beach making it easier to access the restaurant...

My first stay in Bali was amazing. We went in a group of 9 and were all treated with the utmost of care to every detail. All our rooms had wonderful views of the ocean, pool and resort. The spa experience was delightful, the breakfast was very comprehensive and the location suited us all. The pool was a highlight ... the waterfall over my back was very invigorating! There are some great cafes and restaurants close to the resort, Bumbu Bali and The Tree. Planning tours around Bali through reception was very easy. We went into Kuta to experience the shopping, but found most of what we wanted to buy within walking distance of the Aston Bali resort. Drink prices at the Aston were more expensive than those outside the resort. Overall, a truly relaxing getaway with impeccable service. I have already booked the airfares to return to Bali in December and I will definitely be staying at the Aston.
