“Smart yet friendly, top notch place to put your feet up for a few days”
Reviewed 29 July 2014 via mobile

Wonderful four night stay at the Vidago Palace. Exceptional service across the board, very smart yet entirely unstuffy or pretentious. Not a huge amount to do in the hotel's environs, but who cares with a spa, pool, restaurant and sunshine like that. Furthest we got was about 200 yards up the road to try the excellent and reasonable food at the Quinta dos Cavelleros (or something like that) on a couple of nights.

Had a few treatments at the spa, hands down star experience was the Vichy Scrub, bit like a human car wash. Sigh...Also started the spa water drinking therapy, although was too lazy to do the requisite 1/2 walks between sips and ended up poolside with a cold Super Bock after a couple of days instead.

Pool great, best place to park oneself up the hill behind the pool on one of the nicely-spaced apart pairs of loungers, surrounded by trees and the occasional cicada chirp.

Restaurant not cheap but good, in the most amazing cavernous ballroom. Lots of amuse bouches and a wonderful sommelier, Vito (I think!) who would pour my glass of sublime vinho verde in two halves to make sure it stayed the perfect temperature.

Room was top notch, very comfy bed, a tonne of books on art and architecture, huge bathroom, Molton Brown bits and all very farrow and ball.

Bar area great, and a thank you to Luis who served me most evenings, with very Portuguese-style generosity on the measures of vinho verde or occasional white port.

Staying now at a five star, luxury hotel of the world place in Porto before heading home, and can honestly say doesn't live up to the Vidago in any shape or form. The service at the latter about the best I've ever experienced.

As for the breakfasts...well I don't want to give it all away...enjoy!!!

Came to this hotel long time ago. Excellent room quality in several levels, from room, service, food, surroundings and spa.
Expect 5 stars prices, though a very good restaurant nearby can be found in tripadvisor.
The gardens around are very nice for a healthy walk, will come back one day for sure.
The Palace is well worth a visit. Come to this place if you can!

We don't usually go for large hotels like this but decided to give it a try as part of our holiday tour of Northern Portugal. We were very pleasantly surprised. This is a hotel that plays to its strengths - a luxury standard in a classic building.

The building is of a high standard (it reopened about 4 years ago). The huge staircase as you enter is quite magnificent and sets the standard for all the public spaces. Standard bedrooms are not large but are adequate and well furnished.

The buffet breakfast is excellent - lots of choice and good quality. We also had one dinner in the restaurant and again it was of the quality you would expect. Only reservation was the lime risotto served with my wife's fish. It seemed rather too sharp and detracted from the rest of the meal (maybe we should have commented at the time but it is always difficult when travelling abroad). (There are other restaurant nearby so you are not locked in to the hotel restaurant)

The biggest praise has to be for the staff. Everyone was so professional. It was a pleasure to experience it. Even the greeting on arrival was spot on - being met at the steps, luggage taken out of the car and the car driven away to the car park. While we checked in the luggage was delivered.

A place we strongly recommend.

Vidago Palace is one of the best hotels I ever stayed in. Located in an amazing Palace, Vidago Hotel is the perfect place to spend a few days with a family or as a couple.
The hotel is surrounded by amazing gardens that extend for miles. You can walk up the mountain or just use the available bicycles. In the garden you also find a golf court.
The hotel is in a palace and all the style is from that era. Rooms are big, very comfortable and stylish. The hotel also has an interior swimming pool, a sauna, a Turkish bath and an outdoor heated jacuzzi.
Finally, breakfast is very good and dinner is fantastic.
The only thing missing is a fire place, that would be great for the winter days.
I highly recommend this hotel.

Really beautiful luxurious palatial hotel, excellent lush rooms with glorious views with all amenities befitting a 6star hotel, a palace actually, superb breakfast, beautiful breakfast room...... Except ..... and please forgive me, sounds so trivial .....but no coffee/tea stations in the rooms and no real chips with the room service meals and pool meals, crisps..... really?

Driving up to the imposing facade to have your luggage unpacked and car taken off you ,is the start of your experience. Check in by efficient staff, into a well appointed room with views over the valley.
Onto the terrace for drinks, into the spa with an outdoor and indoor heated pool. a jaccuzzi pool and gym.
Tennis or golf on hand and then into dinner for a wonderful meal. What more could you ask for!

Room Tip: A room in the front has wonderful views

Open since 1910 this is a kind of hotel that every seasoned traveler should try, at least once in its life.
At first one is overwhelmed by the sheer size of the facade and the beauty of the gardens, but once inside you really fell you came to a special place full of history and glamour.
The hotel has been completely renovated to its former glory with nice modern touches that never spoil the experience. Rooms have enough space to relax and the bed is top standard. Sleep quality was very good.
I stayed in the lower floor with a small area outside to lie down under the sun. The bathroom was very good with tub and huge shower with all the amenities one should expect.
As for breakfast, besides eating in a marvellous room filled with natural light all the products are of good quality and the choice is plentiful. A real pleasure to look for after a good night sleep.
The park around the hotel is beautiful and very enjoyable to go for a long walk. You can even try the mineral water straight from several springs, as this is a former thermal resort famous for its naturally carbonated waters.
The few minus in this otherwise perfect stay was the restaurant which is famous for the food but for me somewhat a disappointment. Too expensive and not distinctive enough to earn my approval. Although there were a lot of waiters around the dinner went from 8.30 pm to 11.30 pm! So much time to get our food and so little to eat in the end.
The barman at the lounge bar could also learn how to prepare the new gins. He just served it like a normal one which is not acceptable in today's standards.
Overall it was all memorable even more for the children. Fantastic space to ride a bike (available) as well as indoors and outdoors swimming pool.

Room Tip: I recommend the rooms on the ground floor (5,6,7,8) with direct exit to the garden.
