Reviewed 27 July 2010

Perfect size, excellent amenties, modern, clean, beautiful private setting, so close to best beach and lovely lovely owners. We considered the earlier Trip Advisor reviews before booking and although attracted to Vaikoi as a result, were a little uncertain as there were few photos of the inside of the bungalow and only 3 reviews. Upon arrival we were so happy we had booked here and absolutely agree that this is an excellent place to stay. We stayed in a one bedroom bungalow which is roomy for 2 people - decent size kitchen and bedroom, lovely sitting area, large bathroom and a lovely spacious front verandah that catches the last of the afternoon sun. We had friends staying at the nearby Rarotongan who paid a lot more for their accomodation but we believe that we had the nicest place to stay by far! We hope Vaikoi will be available next time we visit Rarotonga as it will definitely be our first choice.

Highly recommend Vaikoi, we stayed in the 3 bedroom house that was well appointed hadd everything you would need to enjoy a truly delightful holiday. Beach very close, bus close, Rarotongan resort close. Kathy and Mata are fantastic hosts who leave you to it but ensure that if you need anything they will sort you out. Kathy provided a basket full of toys for our 3 year old to play with anf kept us well informed of the things to see and do and where to eat etc. Our family loved it here and we will be back!

Mata, the host, was so helpful, friendly and lovely. He met us in our accommodation when we arrived at 1am and was smiling!

We had the one bedroom villa, which was modern and well equipped. We were supplied with some food supplies to get us going: a couple of paw-paws (papaya), bananas, a loaf of bread, a litre of milk, 3 litres of bottled water plus the usual tea/coffee supplies.

For a small extra fee we were also supplied with a portacot for our 5 month old baby and were given a large tub to bathe him in.

At one stage the washing machine in our villa broke down and made our clothes dirty, and Mata took them home and washed them in his own machine, so they came up brand new.

The accommodation is 2 minutes walk from Aroa Beach and is on the other side of Rarotonga to Muri Beach (which is the really touristy part) so this meant that we practically had the most lovely beach to ourselves for the entire time we were there.

The Vaikoi is also a 5 minute walk to the Rarotongan (a resort) so if you want/need cocktails, swimming pool or a meal, it's not far away from these luxuries.

Nothing was too much trouble for our host, and I would definitely stay at this place again.

I’m sooooooo hesitant to write this review – in case I never get to stay there again because the place will be flooded with guests! Where to start…the location. Aroa Beach is the BEST spot in Rarotonga. Protected from the prevailing winds (which can be gusty in August) and with great snorkeling, it’s not over-run by tourists as Muri tends to be. Cathy and Mata have created a wonderful spot. With only 4 garden-set villas, the complex is a 2 minute walk to the beach and bus stop and it's well protected from the increasingly noisy traffic on the main road. It’s only a 4 minute walk to the Rarotongan Beach Resort (great for happy hour!) We stayed in the 3 bedroom villa, which is a well kept, well appointed ‘Lockwood’ style home completely private from the other villas and the owner’s residence next door. The gardens are lovely. Tropical plants are surrounded by plenty of lawn (great for the kids) and bordered by a fascinating taro patch. We could pick fresh island limes from a tree next to the house. There’s parking next to each villa. Inside we had everything we needed and more. Rooms had fans and insect screens and ample drawer space. Bed linen was clean and suitable. The bathroom had the BEST water pressure in The Cook Islands (listen up Paradise Cove!) and there’s a separate extra toilet, plus laundry area. Floors are cool tiles and the lounge and kitchen are open plan with cathedral ceilings. There’s a patio at each end (with furniture) and Cathy and Mata provided a BBQ. We were a group of 4 adults and one pre-schooler. We cooked almost every night in the wonderfully roomy kitchen and ate outside and in as there’s plenty of table settings. The clothes line was busy most days as we washed out own laundry. At night we watched the news on TV and I think there was a DVD player too…The house is so comfortable for a family and is nicely decorated with art works and pictures throughout. Cathy and Mata were so helpful. We used the snorkel gear and kayak on the lagoon and Cathy turned up with beach toys for our son after his bucket broke! I have visited Rarotonga 6 times and Vaikoi is by far the best value and quality family accommodation I have found. Negatives? Almost nothing. The roosters are really loud for most of the night (but that’s not Vaikoi’s fault!) and perhaps the noise insulation in the home could be better, but who cares when you’re in paradise!

Melanie & I recently spent 10 days in Rarotonga, staying at Vaikoi. We have absolutely no reservation in recommending Vaikoi. We wanted something self contained, clean, comfortable and quiet and it was this and more. It provided everything we needed and was in immaculate condition, with very hospitable hosts - Kathy & Maata.

Vaikoi is just a couple of minutes wander from a very lovely beach. The snorkelling there was the best we found around the whole island, including other spots that seem to be recognised as the best places. As soon as you entered the water you had the feeling you were swimming in an aquarium.

We rented a scooter from the budget rentals place just along the road, next to the Rarotangan Resort - that proved to be a perfect way to get around. And it was literally around as we circumnavigated the island several times in less than an hour - at a sedate pace what's more.

A number of restaurants were within a 20 minute scooter ride. We tried a some of these, and also catered for ourselves on several nights. There are a number of good supermarkets and grocery stores.

We walked across the island one day - that was a fairly demanding hike which requires reasonable fitness and good shoes. It was a great way to get some exercise after a few lazy days on the beach.

Also recommended is Pa's guided nature trip - he is a local identity who has a great knowledge of local flora, and their health propoerties.

If you are looking for a very relaxing, easy going holiday we suggest a stay at Vaikoi in Rarotonga.
