This place used to do an amazing breakfast and lovely take-away baps/sandwiches. However it seems standards have slipped, the breakfast was slightly more expensive than usual and below usual standards. They have replaced the lovely rolls they used for baps with "posh" style crusty things that are too big to get in your mouth and overpower the bacon, egg or sausage inside.

Overall this is an ok cafe. But it could be so much more.

“I actually can't believe this ...”
Reviewed 29 August 2012

If I relate our experience, maybe someone out there could shed some light on it (perhaps the management of the Dartmouth Steam Railway ?) :

We arrived off the steam train, on our way to catch the ferry to Dartmouth. It was lunchtime and the Bistro at the station looked inviting. Some people were sitting at a table being served something that looked tasty. Other people were queuing for take-away food. There were no signs of lunch menus on the tables and the large menu above the counter was entitled 'take-away menu'. However, there were some nice looking pasties and other items in the display cabinet, so we had hopes for a nice lunch. We queued for an age then I asked the monosyllabic member of staff about the quiches in the cabinet. It turned out that they were not veggie, but - no worries - some of the pasties were marked with a 'V', so I asked about those. The member of staff called out to the chef (or someone) in the kitchen to ask whether 'we are serving the pasties', to be told 'no'. This was the end of the exchange with the staff member, who didn't offer any explanation, alternative suggestions or indeed any indication that she was actually serving in an eating establishment at lunchtime with some customers clearly asking about lunch. Bemused, we left at this point and nobody made any effort to stop us.

I remain completely baffled by this bizarre experience. We had a sandwich instead at the marvellous pub up the road, the Ship Inn.
