“MANNA FROM DEVON CLASS AND OVERNIGHT STAY”
Reviewed 17 May 2013

A lovely weekend including a cookery workshop on the Saturday, learning to bake with a wood-fired oven. The location was great, nestled on the Kingswear hillside looking out over the estuary with views of Dartmouth over the water. David and Holly were very hospitable and David's cookery workshop thoroughly enjoyable and informative culminating in tasting the wonderful array of food cooked in the wood-fired oven. We stayed in a large room with ensuite and fabulous views, spotlessly clean. Breakfast was very tasty and plentiful, beautifully cooked. A perfect weekend and just what we needed !

Enjoyed a wonderful 'pop up Indian supper' expertly prepared and cooked by Holly with the help of Anna. Met new, interesting, lively people and dined on flavoursome Indian food in a relaxed, informal atmosphere: excellent value - hope to return for another 'pop up ' very soon!

“An inspirational family day out during the school holidays”
Reviewed 28 February 2013

During the recent half term holiday we took our 2 daughters aged 9 and 11 to the Manna from Devon Cookery School to learn how to make bread and pasta. We had a thoroughly enjoyable day. It was relaxed and informative and we came away inspired to make our own bread and pasta. Two weeks on, this is exactly what we have done. David Jones, the owner, showed us how to make a basic dough mix and then use this to create two seeded loaves, crisp breads and pizza. We learnt how to make pasta. David brought to the table a range of potential ingredients that we would eventually combine to make a number of very tasty fillings for the ravioli. This was great as we each made something different. David's style is extremely engaging and this was important. It wasn't a case of the children looking and learning. They actually created all of the food themselves ( as did the adults). David spent time giving instruction on how to use knives safely and oversee the girls as they created the various fillings. We enjoyed a lovely lunch ( our culinary efforts) complimented with lovely wine for the adults and range of local organic drinks for the children ( no cheap supermarket squash here). Much appreciated.
So many activities for children can on occasion be stressful and competitive as we strive to pack in as much so called learning into any spare time and during holidays. Often, as adults, we are confronted with young, enthusiastic leaders for these extra curricular events where everyone is a "guy" and there is always a competition going on. It is so refreshing to find a family holiday activity where everyone has a good time in a relaxed environment where the children are encouraged and families can learn together. Would highly recommend this if you are in South Devon and are looking for a break from the beach.

“Tapas cooking fantastic!”
Reviewed 8 October 2012

I spent a wonderful day at Manna from Devon to learn more about cooking tapas. I had a lovely relaxed day and learnt new skills, techniques and recipes. We spent the majority of the time cooking a range of dishes and then had the chance to enjoy everything we had concoted. Holly and Anna were very knowledgable, friendly and happy to work at the level which suited the skills you arrived with. I'm now planning to come back with my family to do some bread making!

“A heaven-sent family activity holiday”
Reviewed 29 August 2012

We have an 11 year old football-loving, Xbox-playing son and were looking for an activity holiday in which we could all take part. Having complained that my cooking is on occasion “boring”, I called his bluff and booked the three of us onto a family cooking holiday at “Manna from Devon”, a bed and breakfast cookery school in Kingswear, South Devon.

We spent the week in the home of Holly and David Jones enjoying their bed and breakfast (“bed and heaven” as my son called it after the sumptuous morning meal) and their friendly company and unfaltering hospitality. We took two courses – bread and pasta making, and Mediterranean.

David, formerly a Royal Naval Officer and management consultant, retrained as a baker and shared his expert knowledge and skill with us with good humour and patience. My son had a particularly good kneading technique and enjoyed stretching out pizza bases and plaiting loaves. Father and son squeezed dough through the pasta-making machine and as mum, the sauces, fillings and toppings were my particular interest.

The highlight of the day was the late lunch that followed as we dined on the fruits of our labour. The pizza was by far the best we have ever tasted – and that includes authentic Italian ones.

The next day Holly, who trained at Leiths School of Food and Wine and has over 20 years experience, was taking a baking class with a mother and daughter that had treated themselves to a break from other siblings. We explored Dartmouth and took a trip up the river on one of the many available boat trips.

Our second class was in Mediterranean cuisine. David lit one of their wood burning stoves (I counted three) on the veranda and we returned inside to learn to fillet mackerel and squid which had been delivered that morning by the local fishmonger, Mark. We were also taught safe use of knives, which, with two children of primary school age in the party, was very reassuring. It also persuaded me to invest in some decent knives myself on my return home! There was no room to be squeamish as guts and ink spewed out onto the chopping boards.

The children opted to make meatballs (as opposed to koftas which the adults fancied) and a whole chicken was marinated too. Pitta bread and another savoury bread sprinkled with “ras el hanout” – the discovery of the course – were also made from scratch. Once again we had the most scrumptious lunch that was rounded off with baked peaches and Chantilly cream.

We returned home with a signed copy of Holly and David’s “Wood-fired oven cookbook”. We don’t have a wood-fired oven, but the recipes will inspire us! It was an educational and inspirational holiday, which I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.
