Wow what a find!
I was brought here by my boyfriend for a suprise weekend and it was SUCH a treat.
I could not recommend this place more.

The saying 'the devil's in the detail' could not apply more to place. The attention to detail across every single aspect of this place was beyond expectations.

The House is sort of a cross between boutique hotel and luxury b&b. There is no official reception but there is a wonderful living room to enjoy all day and night with a roaring fire and different seating areas so you can relax in your own personal space among the other guests. Every night you can enjoy a pre-dinner drink there and of course there are handmade canapes served! The house itself is stunning - with wonderful history and period features like beams and ancient walls. The grounds have a lovely walled garden with THE most stunning view over a field of sheep and lambs and the Exmoor rolling hills in the backgroud. There is a charming covered stable area where (in nicer weather) you can have dinner or enjoy a nice drink taking in the setting. There is even a little shop on site with pretty homemade goodies and interior design pieces.

Max and Andrew the hosts are the real stars of the show and make the place the star that it is. Nothing is too much trouble for them and you could not ask for more charming and welcoming hosts who seem to genuinely care and love what they are doing. There is a reason why every single review on this site is positive! So rare but SO deserved.

The room we stayed in (The Fry) was divine. Again, all the little touches - homemade cookies on arrival, hand picked gorgeous flowers, a wide array of coffees and teas (tea pigs!), jar of sweets, luxury Cowshed bathroom products, amazing fluffy (very vegas style) dressing gowns etc... amazing. The room had a lovely window seat looking out over that wonderful field so at night all you could hear were the lambs which was bliss. The bed itself was super comfortable and every night the duvet was turned down and a little night treat was left on our pillows! top notch stuff!

Finally, the food... ah the food... normally on weekends away we make an effort to explore the local area and restaurants rather than stay in hotel place. However, having sampled the Cross Lane cooking on our first night we knew that might be hard.. It was incredible. Credit must go to chef Gareth (who came and chatted after each meal for feedback which was nice.) Tom who was front of house with Max and Andrew was also so charming and helpful. The menu was reasonably priced and locally sourced with a great selection every meal. The sunday roast deserves special mention - it was officially THE best roast we have eaten in a restaurant which is some feat! Breakfasts alone were good enough to write home about.

So all in all really there is nothing to say but thank you to Max and Andrew for a slice of heaven. We have told everyone we know about your special place and we cannot wait to return.

After staying at Cross Lane House, we felt it only too right to write some kind of thank you for such a wonderful experience. We thought of all the superlatives we could say about the place that would be justly deserved. Then we saw the revues that have already been written. They were there already.
Everything about the attention to detail, quality of service, and quality of the food is of the highest order. Yes people could say well you can get that anywhere if the price is right but this place has the X factor and that comes in the form of Max and Andrew (The Owners).
From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave they are there for you. Whether that is them or their wonderful team of people they have working for them. They are attentive to all your needs without being over fussy. It’s as though they have a sixth sense that is working just for you. Was this special treatment just for us? No every guest had the same level of commitment shown to ensure they were catered for.
Some may argue you could go to any corporate high end hotel and get the same service. True but doesn’t it always feel like you’re just another number on the concierge tick sheet. This isn’t a corporate high end hotel. This is something far superior. Steeped in history that goes back to the thirteenth century. The modernisation has in no way detracted from the feel of going back in time. There is too much to write about all the aspects of the house here but one special mention has to go to the courthouse. A beautiful setting for breakfast that takes you back in time and takes all your cares away.
Max and Andrew have a work ethic and enthusiasm that ripples all the way through their wonderful home, (home is the word I meant). They lead by example and the staff are a credit to them.
I didn’t want to write this really as I would like to keep it as a guilty little secret but that would be mean.

Many thanks for your lovely feedback/review. It was our aim when we started Cross Lane House to provide refined luxury in a relaxed surrounding, moving away from the stuffy environment that can sometimes be present in hotels. We view Cross Lane House as the home of our guests whilst in residence and we indeed want then to feel comfortable and relaxed. I am delighted that you enjoyed your home in the country. We were looking for somewhere special near Porlock where we were married to celebrate our Golden Wedding and we certainly got it at Cross Lane. The room, the food and all the little touches were magic. Nothing was too much trouble for Max and Andrew. We will recommend Cross Lane to all our friends. It was a very special stay.

We recently enjoyed a short trip to Somerset as a birthday celebration and were advised that Cross Lane House might suit us. Having read previous reviews, we expected high standards and were not disappointed. This place is a gem !

A National Trust building with a very intersesting history, it has been beautifully restored without losing any of its character and charm. In fact, in our view, it is a template for a successful adaptation of an historic structure to provide the modern comforts and standards we all have come to expect.

We got a very warm welcome from our hosts, Max and Andrew, who have developed an exceptional product - with a restaurant providing a high standard of cuisine featuring locally sourced produce, together with really comfortable accommodation with great little design touches everywhere. Spotlessly clean throughout, coupled with excellent professional service from the entire team (thanks Tom) - we found it to be absolutely to our taste and we are already planning to return with some friends.

They even arranged wonderful weather for us - not easy in March ! Well done to all.

Allerford village is a small quaint settlement with an historic pack-horse bridge and is a great base for walks etc - with directional details to borrow supplied on laminated sheets by Cross Lane House upon request. Porlock - a larger village - is quite close (just over a mile distant) and has a selection of various shops/pubs etc if required and nearby Porlock Weir provides an interesting historic harbour setting with a selection of food/drink facilities.

Max and Andrew deserve highest credit for what they provide in Cross Lane House.

Room Tip: Choose any room available - you can't go wrong here in our view.

I only ended up here because the first place the National Trust were going to put me up in was full and the second place had gone bust, so it was third time extremely lucky. The hospitality, courtesy and room were all excellent and the breakfast was absolutely superb. Although I didn't have dinner there, I met some clearly "well-off" locals who said the food was outstanding. I would love to take my wife there in future, she would be in her element!
