Just spent a weekend at this beautiful hotel. Although it looked a little austere from the outside, the inside was beautifully decorated and clean throughout. It almost gave us a feeling of going back in time! We were lucky to have been allocated a room on the 2nd floor which was on the corner of the building, with fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. We had a double bed, with a single alongside; table, easy chairs and the usual wardrobe and dressing table. Tea/coffee making facilities (plentiful), thick white fluffy towels, hairdryer, clock radio, large screen tv., were all in the room. Then we found another smaller bedroom with yet another single bed, wardrobe, dresser, towels, tea coffee. Then next door to that a lovely modern bathroom, with complimentary shower soap. It felt like a suite! The package we had for the weekend was bed, breakfast and evening meal, and the food was great! Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and if it's peace and tranquility you crave, then this lovely hotel is well worth a visit.

We stayed here one night on our hike along Hadrian's wall. Our room was lovely, in fact it was one of the nicest we stayed in on our journey. The bathroom was fantastic, a hot tub and Dove shower and bath foam, the breakfast was plentiful and tasty and staff nice. The only problem is the hotel caters for OAPs and the elderly and we were way too young. We just didn't feel comfortable with the tea dance and bingo brigade even though they were having so much fun. We were glad it was only for one night. This hotel is for the over 80s.

Room Tip: If you are younger and need to stay here ask for a basement room. They are quiet and out of the way.

A splendid high location gave us some cooling wind during the current hot sticky weather. The bedroom & attached bathroom were just about perfect, the only tiny downside being the current residents: i.e. one mosquito & one bluebottle. The evening carvery was superb, with unlimited amounts of the main course for £9.75. The breakfast was also superb. My only dislike was the tear-open paper packets for sugar & similar for jam - one has to open so many to get the required amount. Noise from the ground floor penetrated the second floor bedrooms & a lorry of some kind drove noisily below around 2 a.m. I would certainly like to stay again, perhaps taking my own marmalade & sugar!

Used this hotel whilst walking Hadrians Walk its a bit of a trip from the wall but the manager did drive us back to the start point the next morning. (Thanks very much) The hotel was clean and tidy and the staff very friendly. Food was excellant and the carvery was great value. The breakfast was a buffet and the cooked food was of a good standard.
The hotel was a bit dated and felt as if it needed to be redocorated but saying that is was clean and comfortable.
There was a couple of coach tours staying at the hotel whlist we were there so the hotel entertainment was geared towards them mostly elderly couples. However it is a large hotel and there was plenty of space around the hotel so never felt it was overl;y busy.

Very brief, great views from hotel.. Staff excellent and food is amazing..
Plenty of retired folk seem to stay here but it's fair to say there's also a mix of ages.
Owned by the co-operative group so great values too...
Certainly worth a visit...

Friendly staff, good food, beautiful scenery & the peace of an isolated hotel with comfortable rooms. This is my fourth time in this wonderful place. Can recommend all aspects of this venue to those who want escape pressures of the modern world. I always feel invigorated after a few nights of deep sleep with only the sounds of the countryside for company.

I stayed at the Gilsland Spa Hotel with members of my walking group during our annual walking holiday. The hotel was superbly situated for exploring Hadrian's Wall and surrounding countryside and commands a fabulous view. Part of the Irthing Gorge is also within the hotel grounds and this also provides wonderful wooded walks. The hotel is extremely spacious, all the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and the food was quite delicious especially if you enjoy traditional English dishes. There was always an extremely good choice and the buffer breakfast was of a very high standard. Within the grounds are a bowling green, putting course and croquet lawn but sadly the name is slightly misleading because there isn't a spa. For comfort, cuisine and hospitality I couldn't fault this hotel. Of interest during our stay virtually all the other guests were very well into their retirement years which we thought just a little bit unusual.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side have by far and away the best view and those on the outside walls I much qui...
