“Tantalion House Cottage”
Reviewed 19 August 2013

While doing research this summer at Cambridge University, I had the opportunity to visit the area around Hadrian's Wall with my spouse. We had hoped to stay at the B&B but it was full. The cottage was open so we decided to stay there. We had an absolutely wonderful time and enjoyed the freedom and solitude the cottage afforded. The cottage is quite comfortable for two and beautifully decorated. Roger was a delightful host.

Room Tip: If you have a car, and plan to be out and about, the cottage is a great option. You can come and go...

We had spent the morning travelling and the afternoon at the Vindolanda Museum and then Archaeological site (both recommended by our hosts at Tantallon House via e-mail). The best part was arriving, tired and hungry at the bed and breakfast and being called down to enjoy delicious tea and fruit cake in the lounge. Our host spent quite some time telling us about the walks along Hadrian's Wall. We stayed in a comfortable room with an en-suite bathroom and our teenage sons had a room with a bathroom next to it, also very comfortable.

Beautiful house with great views, and very comfortable rooms which are tastefully decorated. Hosts are most welcoming, very knowledgeable about the area and helpful in every way. Wide choice of delicious breakfast dishes and all-round commitment to good ethical standards. Look forward to another visit.

We stayed in 4 very good B&B's in Northumberland on a walk along the Hadrian's Wall Path and this was the best. It was the only one where we were offered tea and refreshments on arrival. There are more attractive villages than Gilsland but Tantallon House is well situated overlooking the lovely Irthing valley. It is close to the interesting Roman site at Birdoswald and on the AD122 bus route. The great thing about Victorian houses like this is the high ceilings and the spacious, relaxed feel this gives. Our bedroom (Nelson's Cabin) was spacious, comfortable and spotless. Breakfast was awesome, with a good choice of cereals, fruits, breads, and traditional cooked, including a wonderful locally-made peppered sausage. Our hosts could not have been more helpful. We dined at the nearby Samson Inn which was outstanding.

I stayed here for one night on a cycle tour. Roger was extremely welcoming and happy to tell all about the area.
My room (Nelson's Cabin) was very comfortable, with ensuite and a view of Hoot the Owl's roost. Unfortunately, didn't actually get to see Hoot.
Breakfast was fantastic and cooked to order.
Wifi was available, but difficult to hook into, and my mobile didn't get reception there (no reflection on the hotel - I had trouble getting reception on the whole path)
I would come back and stay here happily..

Stopped here on my first night of my recent Hadrian's Cycleway Coast to Coast trip.
The host Roger was excellent as was the breakfast. The room was good but although the bathroom was solely for my use it was not en-suite but a couple of yards down the landing.
Could not connect to the "1st floor WiFi" from my iPhone but could to the main WiFi downstairs.

We recently stayed at Tantallon House for one night. The house dates back to 1888 and is tastefully decorated in keeping with this period. Roger was a delightful host and very passionate about the area. He was very informative and helped us to plan the best places to visit. He offered us cold drinks in the sitting room when we arrived, which were just what we needed on a hot day. There were lots of bluebottles buzzing in the window which was a bit off putting but they were nowhere else in the house. The room was clean and comfortable with tea, coffee and biscuits. Breakfast was plentiful with cereal, toast, fruit and yoghurt followed by a full English breakfast. A comfortable stay.
