“Wonderful B&B”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 September 2012

My wife and I stayed just one night, but would love to have had the opportunity to stay longer. Denise was an absolutely superb hostess, going above and beyond to ensure the comfort of her guests. She is a superb cook/chef and, unusually for a B&B, offers dinner as an option. As other reviewers have already noted, her meals are amazing. If you are planning a trip to the most interesting parts of Hadrian's Wall, you might well consider booking here. Book ahead - Denise is on the tour companies' radar and doesn't always have room if you're booking at short notice (as we found out).

Our room was an enormous and comfortable space with a day bed as well as a very comfortable queen-size bed and the ensuite bathroom was modern and spotless. Brookside Villa also offers a guest bar which runs on the honour system - you just write in the book what you have taken and Denise adds it to the bill when you check out. There is a nice sitting room for guests and a lovely, if cosy dining room.

To top it all off, free wireless internet is part of the service. Denise even has a netbook for complimentary use by guests.

All in all, we were absolutely delighted to spend even a single night here and would definitely go back if we were in the area again.

Lovely B and B, gorgeous rooms and location.
Unless you eat in the B and B there is only the Gilsland Spa to eat at which is a bit of a hike up the hill 15 minutes away.
We never got to eat at the B and B as the meal timings didn't fit in with our timings and with what we wanted to do. But the menu looked nice. You have to choose your menu a day in advance and sit down prompt at 7pm - a bit more flexibility from the landlady would be welcome in regard to meals especially for weary hikers and the more spontaneous of guests, and the fact that you can't always make a decision about what you want to do immediately on arrival!
Another slightly off putting thing was the amount of signs and notices in the guest house telling you what to do and not to do, sticky labels on all the light switches telling you to SWITCH OFF!!! I think someone went mad with the label
Machine!! Overall it was very good the breakfast was lovely, the bacon was gorgeous and the well stocked honesty bar was fab.

Heh! Thanks for the review, but please be fair and honest - you stated you DIDN'T want a table for dinner 1st night. And told me you'd rather eat in Brampton the second night as you "had NO idea about your schedule, and it wouldn't be fair to me to reserve a table". You can't have it all ways! And sorry that you found the CARBON TRUST "switch it off" label on the light switch off-putting -we try to do OUR bit to reduce our toll on our planet!

After hiking Hadrian's wall, any place would have done well. But hat I encountered at Brookside Villa was amazing. The meals were not just the best I've had in England, but the best I've had in months. The views and breathtaking and the staff polite and charming. Anybody who stays here would be thrilled with the ambience and accommodations!

We have nothing but praise for our stay at Brookside Villa, from our welcome by Denise on arrival, to our departure three days later. It is ideally situated for walkers exploring the beautiful countryside and Hadrians Wall, and a good breakfast ensures you get a nourishing start to the day. An added bonus is is the wonderful dinner menu provided and freshly cooked every evening, and pounds lost during walking are soon replaced!
Denise and Gerry are warm and friendly hosts and nothing seems too much trouble, and we will definitely return, and are already loking forward to our next stay.

Best B&B of a week's walking on Hadrian's Wall staying at B&Bs each night. Instantly friendly and comfortable, the welcome was warm and the food (dinner as well as breakfast) was excellent - the dinner was restaurant quality in fact. Easy to relax and unwind after a day's walking. Nice living room and honesty bar. Nice garden with a view. We were a family and children were welcomed. Others were couples of different ages; one couple came for dinner from another establishment. 4 rooms and certainly the three we used were each well decorated and stylish, warm, all en suite, with proper blackout curtains and gave a good night's sleep in a peaceful setting just out from the centre of Gilsland. Room 1 was good sized double on first floor with good view. Room 2 on first floor was a compact double. Room 3 was in attic- the most stylish but to note that the other rooms' extractor fans sounded loudly in it - ok unless someone got u and used their bathroom at night. All in all an excellent stay.

I stayed here for three nights while walking a section of Hadrian's Wall and really appreciated the thoughtful support Denise and Gerry provided to Wall walkers. They aspire to create a homey atmosphere. The rooms are attractive but simple, so you don't need to worry too much about bringing in wet or muddy belongings. Excellent hot showers, nice toiletries, plenty of reading material and maps to consult, Internet access (which did go out a couple of times during my stay). The real highlight of my stay was the meals. There are plenty of options, always including one vegetarian choice, and the menu features local produce, cheeses, meats, etc. There was a wonderful, friendly atmosphere in the dining room, and I got acquainted with most of the guests whose stays overlapped with mine. Denise and Gerry were very ready to advise me about terrain and weather, and Gerry chauffered me to the right starting place for each day's walk. Overall, this was the perfect place for me to stay while beginning my walk! One tip: do plan ahead with respect to your route and meals, and e-mail the B&B in advance if you have any special requests. It will make everything go more smoothly.

Thanks for your kind and considered review. As serious walkers ourselves, we try to do everything we can to help the process! Drying rooms, wet-boot recovery and a lift to your next start point are all part of the service. Thanks again. Denise and Gerry

Could not find any fault with this B & B whatsoever, excellent food at dinner and breakfast.
In fact the dinner we both agreed, was top notch.
