I booked my stay at short notice after looking at reviews of accomadation, the local hotel looked a little risky after one or two recent hotel stays.
You can stay here with confidence, spotless helpfull and friendly.
The bed very comfortable proper first class ,as they would say in Lincolnshire, proper value thank you.

We stayed in the family room with ensuite including a bath with lots of hot water. Very spacious with lovely views. Beds were very comfy. Room was very clean. Denise was very welcoming and helpful. Excellent food. We stayed in and had Denise's home cooked evening meal which was excellent . Better than any restaurant. Felt very much at home and nothing was too much bother. It's an excellent location to explore Hadrian's Wall. We will definitely return.

Room Tip: Lovely family room available at the front of the house. Great view and spacious room with ensuite.

We chose this place because we wanted to visit some really interesting well preserved parts of the wall but needed to walk or catch buses as we had no car weren't planning to walk the whole wall as some people do. The owner was away but Tracey (who normally works part time) was looking after everything and was wonderful! She kindly offered to pick us up from the nearby train station so we didn't need to get a bus. The b&b is everything you could hope for in this kind of location there is a wonderful cosy lounge with plenty of great big couches and chairs there is a fantastic well stocked honesty bar with many many drinks and snacks and a book exchange library and board games! The room was lovely and spacious with a nice modern bathroom and the most powerful shower I have ever experienced! The breakfast is well organised you can choose from an extensive list the night before and everything is lovely. They can also cook dinner which I recommend as there is nothing else nearby with the local pub closed but that's fine as the food is great with a few different dishes to choose from changed daily and scrummy desserts at fine prices. What makes it though is that it is clearly run by people who actually enjoy having a b&b and the warmth and friendliness is wonderful. Nothing is too much trouble and they really go above and beyond for the guests without intruding on you. We thoroughly enjoyed walking the countryside and finding great parts of the wall to enjoy. I would definately recommend this place to anyone!

The standard of accommodation is well above average. Denise Collins the owner coped admirably with a group of soaked hikers.
What makes this B&B outstanding is the quality of the food. Simple dishes of high quality local produce cooked to perfection.
There is nothing much else to Gilsland, this is an oasis.

My wife and I stayed just one night, but would love to have had the opportunity to stay longer. Denise was an absolutely superb hostess, going above and beyond to ensure the comfort of her guests. She is a superb cook/chef and, unusually for a B&B, offers dinner as an option. As other reviewers have already noted, her meals are amazing. If you are planning a trip to the most interesting parts of Hadrian's Wall, you might well consider booking here. Book ahead - Denise is on the tour companies' radar and doesn't always have room if you're booking at short notice (as we found out).

Our room was an enormous and comfortable space with a day bed as well as a very comfortable queen-size bed and the ensuite bathroom was modern and spotless. Brookside Villa also offers a guest bar which runs on the honour system - you just write in the book what you have taken and Denise adds it to the bill when you check out. There is a nice sitting room for guests and a lovely, if cosy dining room.

To top it all off, free wireless internet is part of the service. Denise even has a netbook for complimentary use by guests.

All in all, we were absolutely delighted to spend even a single night here and would definitely go back if we were in the area again.

Lovely B and B, gorgeous rooms and location.
Unless you eat in the B and B there is only the Gilsland Spa to eat at which is a bit of a hike up the hill 15 minutes away.
We never got to eat at the B and B as the meal timings didn't fit in with our timings and with what we wanted to do. But the menu looked nice. You have to choose your menu a day in advance and sit down prompt at 7pm - a bit more flexibility from the landlady would be welcome in regard to meals especially for weary hikers and the more spontaneous of guests, and the fact that you can't always make a decision about what you want to do immediately on arrival!
Another slightly off putting thing was the amount of signs and notices in the guest house telling you what to do and not to do, sticky labels on all the light switches telling you to SWITCH OFF!!! I think someone went mad with the label
Machine!! Overall it was very good the breakfast was lovely, the bacon was gorgeous and the well stocked honesty bar was fab.

Heh! Thanks for the review, but please be fair and honest - you stated you DIDN'T want a table for dinner 1st night. And told me you'd rather eat in Brampton the second night as you "had NO idea about your schedule, and it wouldn't be fair to me to reserve a table". You can't have it all ways! And sorry that you found the CARBON TRUST "switch it off" label on the light switch off-putting -we try to do OUR bit to reduce our toll on our planet!

After hiking Hadrian's wall, any place would have done well. But hat I encountered at Brookside Villa was amazing. The meals were not just the best I've had in England, but the best I've had in months. The views and breathtaking and the staff polite and charming. Anybody who stays here would be thrilled with the ambience and accommodations!
