We stayed here in October 2013. We hired the whole place as a group booking and we have been doing this for 11 years now at various YHA.
Its not the biggest YHA we have stayed at but its really cosy - it felt really nice to have one great big communal kitchen, dining table and lounge.
There is a lovely fireplace at the lounge end.
The scenery around there was lovely - waterfalls off the mountains as you drive along.
The caretaker was super helpful and friendly.
Really liked this place.

Spent 3 nights here at Llandeusant around Easter and certainly enjoyed it, but the the single room in which everyone has to cook, eat and relax isn't really adequate when the hostel is full. Likewise the limited showers and toilets aren't really sufficient when the place is full, given that the campers have access to the same facilities. The volunteer warden was doing a great job trying to keep the kitchen in order and must've been working really hard while we were all out trying to re-organise return some semblance of order. Our family room (4 beds) was small but had a sink. But due to a damp problem the paint was peeling off several of the walls.

I think with fewer than 10 guests the hostel would be great, but otherwise the communal facilities are really over-stretched. So perhaps avoid the holidays and you'll have no problems!

Hi, yes it can get hectic if there are lots of campers and the hostel is full and when it is quiet it is so peaceful, the walls should all be sorted this sept/oct as we are having the builders in so it should be looking good again. This is part of the issue of an old building in such an exposed position, the rain drives in from the west and finds every way in that it can.
Thanks for your comments,
Paul

My son and I ended up here when we couldn't get any camping space at Danywennalt nearby. What a lovely accident this turned out to be. Llandeusant YH is a stone's throw away from some of the more majestic of the Black Mountains, of which we managed to climb three. The Red Kite feeding centre is two minutes away, and an old church just behind the hostel. If you end up camping, you'll damp next to a field full of shep which, during the lambing season, is a real treat. The lovely thing about this hostel is that is has an open plan kitchen, dining and living area, so everyone ends up making friends. We met some interesting, great people this weekend. Surely , this is the best thing about youth hosteling.

The only reason I didn't give it five out of five is that it didn't have a fire pit outside, but it's not a big deal when there's a real fire inside.

Hi, thanks for your comments, I am glad you enjoyed the communal way it is laid out, it is what I really enjoy when I stay over, you can have fires outside, in the corner of the woodland there is a space that you can have a ouydoor fire, benchs around it and with woodland cover, a gorgeous way to spend an evening.
Thanks
Paul

Went alone and stayed in the women's dorm. Only one other person there in addition to the volunteer wardens) during the week. Got busier with families and other walkers over the weekend. Perfect for exploring the Brecon Beacons and I love the fact there was no phone signal or internet- a real retreat. Hostel itself has pretty views and has a campsite/lawn which is a lovely place for a cuppa after a long day on the hills. Communal areas are well stocked and spacious. Beds weren't the comfiest but walking all day meant I slept like a log anyway.
