“An excellent two week vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

Two weeks of calm in the beautiful Limosin countryside. The room was spacious with a great bed and all you could want in terms of amenities. The owners and staff could not have been nicer and catered to our every need. Excellent local food with the meat incredibly delicious prepared by Jules, a master chef, who puts his heart into every dish. The swimming pool was very well maintained and a delight in the hot weather. But what is more difficult to describe was the warm and generous atmosphere of the owners and the staff. We were welcomed and treated as family, a rare thing these days.....

Room Tip: For more than a few nights, the larger rooms offer more space for clothing.i

Le Ranch des Lacs is a bit off the beaten track but the friendly welcome, very comfortable rooms, and great food are well worth it. The three course menu is €35 and a tour of the wine cellar with the chef and owner (who speaks excellent English) is a great way to start off the evening and to select your wine for dinner and he doesn't try to rip you off with overly expensive wines either. Foie gras, excellent beef and either cheese of crepes means that our choice was relatively simple compared to many French meals but excellently cooked and served in a splendid dinning room overlooking the garden. Being at the end of a long lane and near to woods its well situated for a good run in the morning and if you're into dogs they have a beautiful Cane Corso puppy (like a great Dane). Breakfast is just great, home made jams and marmalade, crepes, omelete, cheese, breads, yogurst etc. The room even has tea and coffee making facilities and a well stoked wine bar at reasonable prices. Great value, nice people, good food, nice puppy (he'll be 55Kg when fully grown!)

We stayed for one night and found the hotel very comfortable. We had the table d'hote 26 euro dinner in the evening which was very tasty and well cooked but just a bit too much food for us. We enjoyed choosing our own bottle of wine from the extensive wine cellar, a nice unexpected touch. The Hotel is quite remote so we were glad to have our sat nav. Very good value.

I can't believe that anyone can think 10 euros for breakfast is expensive! The breakfast was excellent and we loved the big table where everyone sat together and talked. The evening meal was wonderful and we've never had such huge portions in France - they reminded us of the States. The setting is beautiful and so peaceful - we really slept well. The wine cellar is briiliant - being able to choose your wine is great and we bought our brewmaster neighbour some local beer which he thought was super. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

I can join many here who have given positive reviews. This place is run with passion and purpose. The rooms are relatively basic but beds are good and efforts have been made to improve facilities. The concept of wine at cost plus 7 euro is brilliant. The kitchen is very basic but an effort is made to work with good quality local produce, which comes at a cost. We ordered the steak and got an incomprehensibly huge portion (2kg), which is about 4 times what is required for two adults and three very small children. The price was too match unfortunately. The pool was closed during our mid July stay. We found a bit of a tendency to guide and educate guests through a multitude of notes, in the hotel, the restaurant, by the pool... It is a place that has a vision but it is not necessarily to everyone's taste.

Positives: the peace and quiet. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere and therefore totally quiet and relaxing. Our room was not adjoining any other room although we could hear the people opposite come and go.
Largish swimming pool.
Huge bed - king size, which is not that common in France.
The welcome from the owners - always attentive and informative.
Booking was swift and efficient.

Negatives: for us they outdid the positives, alas. First off, the bathroom facilities. This hotel is not part of the usual Logis chain of rural hotels in France and it shows. No Logis inspector would have passed our bathroom as suitable, or at least I hope not. It was substandard to the point of grottiness and I was disappointed to see that the owners had not invested any profits in redoing the tiling or grouting. Bizarrely the mirror was too high for us (we're 5'6" and 5'8"). There is a tract posted instructing guests how to shower and brush their teeth without wasting water. I abhor waste and environmental damage like the next man but there is a limit. I also suspect that environmental awareness is at times a cover for cutting costs.
It gets worse: we realised when we arrived that we would have to share a toilet. This was partly our fault for not having read the website carefully enough to see this, but it has to be said that the owners certainly did not make it clear either in their description or when booking.
Value for money: none whatsoever. The price of our room was 46 euros, breakfast was 10 euros per person, for a total of 66 euros. This is not extortionate were it not for the grotty bathroom, lack of private toilet, "quirky" furnishings and run-of-the-mill breakfast.
By way of a comparison, L'Hirondelle du Lac in nearby Peyrat-le-Chateau charged 48 euros for a room with attractive furniture, ensuite bathroom and breakfast for 2 people.
Would that we had gone there instead.
10 euros was the most we paid for a breakfast in France, even more than that served up at a three-star hotel in Lyon.
The restaurant benefits from some shrewd advertising. I can't say we ate badly, but neither was it outstanding. Again the sensation was that clients are milked for every eurocent they have. The much ballyhooed fondue bourguignonne cost a wopping 20 euros per person, likewise the fish dish (a very nondescript truite aux amandes).
An à la carte meal with wine cost 90 euros for two, the most expensive meal we had during our stay in France and definitely not the best (we have been holidaying in France for the past 14 years).
The owners allow guests to descend into the cellar to choose their own wine. An excellent idea, were it not for the fact that they then add 6 euros corkage to the bill. This triggered one of the many "what the ....." moments during our stay.
There was no wifi access in our room.

This is by no means your French rural idyll. Any other time I would book a chambre d'hotes in Peyrat-le-Chateau or Eymoutiers.

Room Tip: The rooms indicated as being for 2 people have a shared bathroom.

Voici quelques exemples ;

We live in France and came to this area to see an exhibition on the ile de Vassivière and at Eymoutiere. We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights and from the moment of booking by telephone to checkout, the stay was a delight. The hotel room was clean and comfortable room though a bit cramped. There is also has an excellent restaurant with a choice of very reasonably priced and well selected wines from the cave. ( Limousin Entrecote steak -frites to die for. Creme brulee to kill for....and a most generous breakfast. ). They say the Belgians and Irish make the best Hoteliers and Jules and Françoise Lahaye have that special Belgian touch which is also reflected in their warm and helpful staff. Highly recommended and we will be back.
