“A little disappointing”
Reviewed 1 August 2012

First time at Hawksbill. Couldn't sleep a wink. shortened my stay. Too many mosquitoes and not enough satisfactory effort to control them in the rooms. By the time I left, I was one big mosquito feeding toy. The mattresses were thin and lumpy. The staff was very accommodating and worthy of the island's hospitable reputation. The food was good but more european in taste. Beautiful scenery. Lots to do.

This was our first visit to Hawksbill and this resort did not disappoint our need to escape everyday life. It's warm and friendly staff accommodated our requirements and nothing was ever too much trouble. The beaches were clean and un-disturbed with plenty of loungers to drift off to sleep on, the only noise came from the cheerful staff singing in the distance. The food choice was limited at this time of year with most evenings accommodating a buffet style. The limited 'live' entertainment was the right balance for the resort to maintain its chilled out atmosphere. We enjoyed every minute here, unlike many other resorts, Hawksbill certainly has a feeling of one big happy family and this made our holiday even more special.

My wife and I first visited this resort more than 30 years ago and fell in love with it at first sight. After a couple of visits work took us to places that made Caribbean vacations difficult. Recently retired and much more experienced global travellers, we decided to return to see if the magic of the past remained.

We were so pleasantly surprised to find the same things that made it perfect in the past continuing today.

We enjoy the Caribbean in the "off" season as the hotels and beaches are less crowded, although it can be warmer and the Hawksbill was @ 35% occupied when we were there in mid-July. It is not a resort for everyone as there is no disco, the evenings are quiet and you are more than walking distance from the major attractions of Antigua. There is only one TV in the activities center but watching the sun set over the sea is so much more fulfilling than watching a reality show in your room, anyway, If you really need that degree of connectivity, there is WiFi which worked very well for us when we used it. However, the small aspects of isolation are more than made up for by the spectacular views and unspoiled beaches and almost cottage environment.

It is a calm and relaxing environment with the sounds of the birds and crickets broken only by the lapping of the surf on the shore. Accommodation is simple but comfortable. Unlike the 1980s there is now A/C in some of the rooms. The main restaurant on the hill overlooking the beach and the rock that gives the resort its name is relaxed and romantic in a 1960s style. Do not be surprised to find a bird eyeing your toast at breakfast, or one of the resort cats waiting for a crumb to fall at dinner. Evening entertainment often involves local bands and performers and can be very good. The beach restaurant and bar is even more relaxed.

The food was very good, portions were substantial and nicely flavored. If you are a fan of some spice, ask for the local hot sauce on the side. House wine was also very nice.

The beaches and water are clear and warm, and there is shade just back from the beach edge. The beach drops off slowly and the surf is very mild so small children can splash around safely. Water sports are mainly of the wind or paddle powered variety (quiet) but jet skis are available if wanted.

As noted by so many others, the staff are incredible. Caring, kind, happy and dedicated, they make the stay so pleasant. They are genuinely concerned with the guests having a good time and they make that clear all the time and with each interaction.

It is true that some parts of the resort are a bit tired but that is probably more due to an ongoing lease issue ( http://www.antiguaobserver.com/?p=30995 ) than deliberate lack of care or attention. As is true with many unique resorts there is a high return rate for those for whom the resort "fits" and it is not unusual to find quests who come back regularly. By the same token, the ambience and relaxation make it ideal for those with very small children and the elderly traveller to rest in a safe and slow moving environment.

For us it was, and remains a magical destination and we will be part of the regular returnees crowd.

Room Tip: Those not used to the heat of the tropics should seek the rooms with A/C.

Second time in Antigua, first time at Hawksbill. While I am not a fan of all inclusive as a rule and would encourage all to get out and about, the Hawksbill experience for a week is a delight. The pace is relaxed, the food is very good and the service is very accommodating and not over powering. The accommodation is simple - very clean and air conditioned sea front bungalows were our lot. The beaches are very clean, the swimming very safe and the opportunities for snorkelling in the bays are abundant. Water sports are limited but that was exactly what we wanted - no frenetic activity and beautiful body posing. Family orientated and quiet. Strongly recommended for a week's stay or as a longer stay as long as you get out around the island!

Room Tip: Sea front rooms agree quieter and better positioned for my preference and probably more accessible

Visited Hawksbill a little while ago with my mum and brother and it was a beautiful experience. The food was great and the staff go out of their way to make sure you're comfortable. Private beaches make the best setting for the sun set every evening before setting off for some cocktails and BBQ. The island is so small so it's worth hiring a car for a day or two to explore places like Nelsons Dockyard, Shirley Heights and St Johns. Great for couples and families alike (although perhaps not with small children).

I visited this hotel in June for business and the first thing that struck me what the friendliness of the staff. It seemed that they were courteous almost to a fault BUT it was not "false courtesy" since the staff appeared genuinely interested in making sure that you were enjoying the stay at the resort.

One can see that the resort is one of the more long standing one's since some of the furniture such as beachside dining chairs and beach chairs are showing signs of wear but they were still generally comfortable. If you get the all inclusive package then you are fed breakfast, lunch and dinner. Most drinks are also free. There are 3 beaches that this property adjoins but sea grape beach is the main one for swimming and to enjoy watersports. I did not try the pool since the sea seemed more inviting.

There are several room options. The room that I stayed in one of the Beachfront Club Rooms. I must say that while it was ok it fell short in what I consider some basic amenities namely a t.v. or radio, clock, adequate overhead lighting and an a/c that works property (it was thankfully soft but it also didn't help the room temperature which can get uncomfortably hot in the Caribbean). I had to turn on the ceiling fan with the a/c unit to get to a comfortable room temperature. The WiFi also doesn't seem to reach in these rooms as I saw other folks outside trying to catch a signal. You can open your windows and get a lot of natural light in the day. But you can still leave on the a/c unit since the place is sealed even with "open windows". You will have to open the doors the get natural air in.

That being said you got a bed, a mini fridge dressers, chairs, an assortment of towels, coffee machine and a safe to store your belongings. The room was generally well furnished/decorated. The landscaping is excellently done and makes for a picturesque views that can only make one say "wow".

All told besides the few issues that I have with the room the staff are friendly and professional. The food is tasty (but it is the only food in the area it seems so make sure you don't miss it or you will be hungry) the beaches gorgeous and the rooms are ok. I think it deserves a several more visits in the future to getaway from it all and just relax.

Room Tip: I recommend Beachfront Club Rooms. They are fantastic since you see the beautiful ocean as you step...

Overall the property is amazing. They have very friendly and helpful staff taking care of your every need. Late June to early July is a good time to visit, because the resort is not full, and you have the beaches to yourself. The rooms were kind of small and some do not have air conditioning. The food was very good, but it would be nice if they had some sort of snacks for sale. I was pleased with my visit here.

Room Tip: Make sure you get an air conditioned room.
