“Good for relaxation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 January 2013

we have stayed here many times, seeing many of the repeaters as we are known over the years.

Great place to relax, rooms are superb and worth the extra pennies for the sea view.

Food is good but a bit basic.

Staff are friendly and curteous

My wife and I have visited this hotel before and we felt that our experience this time was not as good as the last. There are too few dining room staff and people can find themselves waiting for a long time for the lunch and dinner, and it was very difficult to get a drink served at your table in the main restaurant as mostly there were only two wine waiters at any time to serve a busy restaurant. We also found that there are more nights when the evening meal was a buffet rather than guests being served which was dissappointing.

There is little evening entertainment at this hotel which we didn't mind but might not suit everyone.

We had to report there was no water supply in our sea view bungalow on four separate occasions and whilstit was solved reasonably quickly, it was an inconvenience for us to report it as there are no phones in the bungalows so we had to go to reception which was a reasonable distance away.

Sadly not as good a holiday as when we visited around 18 months previously, and we will not be returning.

The hotel is in a lovely setting , overlooking the bay.Only about thirty minutes from the airport.
We stayed in a seaview bungalow which was fine, not air conditioned but we were never too hot.
The bathroom was very dated and had only a shower but it was adequate.
The swimming pool is tiny but we swam in the sea everyday instead.

The food was all OK but nothing out of the ordinary.
Evening entertainment was always good fun.

As with other reviews the hotel really is in need of a refurb. The sunbeds looked about 25 years old and the whole place looked pretty tired.

The majority of the staff were all exceptionally friendly and an asset to the hotel, one or two were a bit sullen but not many.

Beware the mosquitos, I got bitten to bits even with mosquito spray, there is some sort of pig farm and watering hole at the back of the hotel and it resembled a swamp when we were there due to the tropical storm and I am sure the insects come from there.

As it is all inclusive it represents really good value to compensate for the fact that is dated.

If it had a good overhaul we would probably stay again.

Place to go if you are looking for relaxation. Staff was excellent and friendly. Beaches were nice, though there was quite a break of waves some days.
If you are looking to go for some rest and relaxation then I would recommend this resort. If you are looking for entertainment then this really won't be the resort for you. Food was fine, nothing stellar, but was never ill and that has happened a other resorts that I visited. The BBQ fist was delicious. Recommend the Wadadli Cats circumnavigation tour on the catamaran - great day doing that.
The resort is a little dated, but overall a very good experience.

Room Tip: We stayed in the bungalow with the ocean view. Just a few steps to the beach and waves put you to s...

Stayed at Hawksbill at the beginning of December with my wife for one week in a Beach Club room. We have visited Hawksbill for the day on a previous visit to Antigua (this being our sixth to the island) and knew that the garden setting and different beaches were lovely.

Our room was located on the entrance side of the property, slightly away from the main rooms, restaurant and pool area so tended to be quite quiet which suited us very well. The room was typical of other hotels we have stayed in on the island; dated and a bit tired, but needless to say very clean and well presented. Although the temperatures in December are not raging hot the aircon made a difference and also deterred the mosquitoes at night.

The hotel was not full and was frequented by an older clientele (i.e. > 55). Many were there for an extended period over the Christmas period and were returning after many previous visits.
The beaches were lovely and even the famous nudist beach was really open for anyone to walk along (clothes or no clothes). It is along stretch of lovely sand with not many people. Don’t be put off by the signs on the gate as everyone was welcome to stroll along.

The downside of Hawksbill was really the staff. The receptionists and maids were great and nothing was too much trouble but I have to say I did encounter some rude exchanges between some of the bar and table waiters other guests.

The food was typical all-inclusive buffet style. The breakfasts had a good selection of cooked or ‘continental’; lunches were from the BBQ or pool menu and generally of a good standard. However, the dinners varied between self service and full service. I never quite felt that the menus were coordinated and were a general list of what was left rather than planned.

Overall we did like our stay and it was value for money but there are better places at a similar cost on the island. Hawksbill’s USP is its location and beaches.

Room Tip: Beach Club rooms have aircon

As a family we have been going to Hawksbill since 1987 and in the last four years i have been going with my mum. As always we were given a wonderful welcome by the staff many of whom have been there for as long as we have been going so we feel very much part of a 'family'. We love the caribbean simplicity of hawksbill the outstanding grounds; the walks by Sylvie on a Tuesday morning after breakfast are fascinating as she is a real authority on the local floral and fauna! We had a superior room near to the main reception which is a wonderful spot to watch the sunrise sunsets and just sit and absorb the beauty of the place. If you want gloss and glitz this is not for you but we love the layout of the room the ceiling fans and shutters; yes you have to be careful of the mozzies but it is a small price for paradise!!!!! Rum seems to keep them at bay!!!!!!!!!!!The view when you crest the brow of the hill on arrival at hb is as always breathtaking; Cannot fault the attention and care by the staff especially this time as i became ill and had to delay my return to the UK; i felt completely spoilt and touched by all their concern and the speed at which a doctor was called was brilliant. Yes it is a quiet place and could do with a little tlc on the buildings but to be honest we go because we are usually so exhausted know the lovely antiguans so well now that we settle in as soon as we step out of the taxi driven by Richard at the Hotel entrance! Will definetely be returning as soon as possible although the price has shot up quite alarmingly this year sadly and is a shame as it needs to be competitive with other areas in the world to survive. But mum and my heartfelt thanks as normal go out to all there who make us feel so special; Sylvie, Hyacinth Everlie David Kerrryane Shenneth Claudette Ornella Donella Drusilla Adrian William Natasha Grizelda Millie and all. We will return hopefully soon. Whilst there dont forget to visit Krystal Benjamin in the Seagrapes Bar who organises excellent trips for you and is a wonderful asset.

My Wife and i have traditionally holidayed in the traditional European way (Europe, Turkey, Tunisia etc) and as it was time to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversay, we decided on something different, and chose the caribbean, and then narrowed it down to Antigua. The choice of hotel was down to Trip advisor, and the number of favourable ratings for Hawksbill was a major decider in our choice. From all the Trip advisor reviews one can see that you are not going to be staying at the Savoy or the Ritz and why people think that they are ecapses me. It is the same when people judge staff harshly, a holiday consists of location, weather, clientel and staff, and it is that mix that makes or breaks a holiday, and invariably if you are pleasant with the staff they are pleasant with you. We found the staff to be most attentative and considerant.
The hotel is small (no more than 200ish people at any one time) and because of that it is quiet )
if you want razzamatazz then Blackpool is for you, if you want a quiet resort where you can chill out, enjoy the weather, the island and the people then Hawksbill is as good a place to base yourself than anywhere else.
Would we go back, yes, but now that we have savoured the caribbean, there are other islands to see and equally enjoy. Antigua is a lovely palce, beaches by the score.
We stayed between the 8th & 22nd December 2012.

Room Tip: a sea view is a must, but as Mosquitoes are a problem, do not be afraid to ask reception for Mosquit...
