“TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE EVER”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

Do not trust the pictures on the site - it all look pretty, but inside it is a 30-40 years old facility. No pressure in the shower or toilet, lights are not working, shower stall in dangerously slippery - no mats or handles to hold. Our rooms were most expensive, but we were woken up every morning at 6 AM by the grass cutting or releasing the water into the tanks. Drinking water smelled like clorox. Some of the waiting staff was pushy and intimidating. The food was boring and the same every day - we ate red/grey snapper for 8 days! No other fish was presented. Room was not clean to the standards. Our money were stolen from the room safe! Keep your money at the service counter safe!!!Apart from that - the trip to Barbuda which cost $150.00 per person is a total fraud - waist of time and money! Beaches are not private - THEY ARE PUBLIC! People were riding horses in front of our "private" house. Not all 3 beaches are accessible for swimming - some have big boulders and I have a huge abroose on my hip to prove it. Will not recommend to anybody, will never go back there again! P.S. WHen we first entered the room 106 and I sat down on the bad - it collapsed - it was totally broken, and a while ago.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side are quieter, do not look at the price - the most expensive are not the best...

The Hawksbill by rex resorts team appreciates you providing feedback on trip advisor.

Its is rather unfortunate that we were unable to meet and satisfy your expectations with our accommodations, our service staff, our food offerings, etc. Even though the majority of our guest have a memorable experience and return several times, occasionally a few may not.

You indeed reported money missing from your room safe, but after careful investigations by the local authorities the 'claimed money being taken from the safe' was concluded incorrect. There was absolutely no evidence of 'break and enter' of the safe and as stated by yourself, the safe key (one only available) was in your possession at all times.

In regards to the beaches, please be informed that all beaches on island are opened to the public and none are private. The four beaches featured at Hawksbill are enjoyed by many and considered one of the main reasons why Hawksbill is chosen from many others.

In regards to the bed incident, we do hope that you were not hurt. Please accept our humble apologies for the inconvenience it may have caused. Even though we have no record of this incident, we will have our maintenance team check immediately.

Once again thank you for sharing your feedback and despite not being able to meet your expectations, we do hope you may consider trying one of our sister rex resort properties in St. Lucia, Grenada, Barbados or Tobago.

Sincerely'

John

Accommodation was good. Too bad about the locals on Eden Beach, very intrusive. After a walk to the beach one would hope for some peace and quiet, but no they want to speak to everyone. Food and staff all good. We will not be back.

The Hawksbill by rex resort team would like to thank you for sharing your vacation experience on trip advisor.

We are pleased that our accommodations, food and service staff met your expectations. However, noticed that you were not pleased with our clothing optional beach-Eden.

All beaches on island are opened to the public and therefore locals will visit and interact with guests. Many have formed long term friendships and will visit with friends on Eden beach. If someone on the beach becomes a nuisance then the assistance of police will be requested to remove the person from the beach.

Once again thank you for the feedback and we do hope you may reconsider a return visit in the near future.

With three separate beaches you never feel crowded and at times we had it to ourselves.
The location and hotel is quiet, so is ideal if you are looking for a peaceful, relaxing holiday. However, St. John's and other places are all in easy reach.
The staff are very nice, friendly and make you feel welcome.
Rooms are basic but have everything you need. I would strongly advise you come well stocked with mosquito spray as they were the only issue...but that's expected in the Caribbean anyway!
Would thoroughly recommend staying here.

The Hawksbill by rex resorts team would like to thank you for sharing your vacation experience on trip advisor..

We are delighted that you were pleased with our unique location offering four beaches to choose from; our tranquil and relaxing atmosphere; friendly and efficient service staff and our cozy and clean accommodations.

Unfortunately, mosquitoes are common in the Caribbean can be a bit of a bother especially when it rains. Our methods of control are regular fogging of the grounds and repellant which can be sprayed in the area, or a cream which when applied to the skin acts as a shield from the mosquitoes.

Once again thank you for your shared experience and we look forward to welcoming you again in the near future.

positive:
- Location is fantastic , the hotel is at the end of a road , at 3 beaches , surrounded by green nature. Very quiet ! Ratio of the number of tourists to the total area of the hotel complex
beneficial low but certainly not profitable. Care of the hotel complex in the horticultural area almost daily and super .
negative:
- Room in the De Luxe Bungalows in the highest price category ( on the cliff ) were draughty and noisy. All openings of the property inclusive of the balcony door was only with tiltable wooden boards and closable mosquito nets . The breaking of the waves was very disturbing and listen all night. At no time could durchschlafen.Als remedy the Beach front was detailed by us depends with towels and the duvet cover from the inside. In addition, earplugs were worn all night with limited success . What does the air conditioning had at such a ventilated room , could not be clarified . The management was informed of us , however, with no apparent reaction.
We never thought that the waves break us would burden mentally so and were happy to leave on the first quiet night at home .
The great location of the hotel and the images of 3 postcard beaches have fooled away about that is covered under the Wasseroberfäche the beach of large stones. There is no risk-free bathing and swimming möglich.Badeschuhe should definitely be worn . What a pleasure , however, at Darkwood Beach ...
The food at this hotel is very used to. Well English breakfast already says a lot without fresh juices , cheeses and sausages . For lunch we had a barbecue on a regular basis , but the grilled food was way too long on it. The fish was again totgegrillt , the remaining portions of chicken , etc. were black.
Staff was absolutely unfriendly, only 4 days before departure made a strange ease the round. After a further 2 days, we have checked why. The evaluation of the staff was queried by the management when you check out . Overall, we were able to make 3 Pesronen that were absolutely top (2x service , 1x reception)
The language in the hotel was English only , unfortunately my wife can not speak English. This was so far not a problem as long as I was in the area, however, has shown that the hotel staff is completely overwhelmed in all areas (reception, service, management ....) with another language . There was not a single case tried the wishes of a non- English speaking guest ( my wife ) to understand or fathom and enter into ggf.darauf .
The hotel needs to change , not only through investment but in the service. An honest -intentioned kindness is because at least the beginning. Finally, all live on, that is the guest, and maybe even come back. This motivator has not yet taken the majority of Mirarbeiter own.
The reviews of the English guests are to be treated with caution . Many of these guests come for 20 years and more in this hotel, this has pushed the average age during our stays rapidly in height, and rate the hotel correspond very benevolent.

Room Tip: Room Tip: The DE- luxe bungalows only the number 306 is ok.

The Hawksbill by rex resorts team would like to thank you for sharing your vacation experience on trip advisor.

Its was rather unfortunate that we were unable to meet your expectations and therefore make your vacation a memorable experience. It seems that the language barrier on both sides prevented more effective communication and understanding. However, we do take note of your concerns in regards to the food, some of our service staff, the beachfront club bungalow and the 'noise' from the waves on the shore.

We were pleased that you appreciated the efforts of our landscaping team and our reception staff.

Hawksbill is know for its loyal repeaters and their comments/feedback usually summarizes quite well the product that we offer which is a simple, tranquil, friendly atmosphere with clean and cozy accommodations complimented by tasty cuisine.

Once again thank you for your feedback and we do hope that you may reconsider a return visit in the future.

My husband and I traveled to Antigua for the first time on honeymoon a few weeks ago, & we are so glad we chose Hawksbill. The atmosphere is quiet & laidback with plenty (4 beaches & lovely grounds) of space to relax without worries of overcrowding. The off season still introduced us to the friendliest staff, wonderful fellow guests & all around pleasing accommodations. We stayed in a nice, clean Club Room suite that came with a/c, but we only used it once. The sound of the ocean lured me into a deep sleep nightly. Food was delicious & fresh every day. We were always pleasantly full. Some people may expect the newest hotel amenities, modern rooms, 5-star meals & then consider Hawksbill not worthy. We felt that, especially after taking a tour of the island, Hawksbill in staff attitude, cuisine & ambiance spoke to the true gorgeous nature of Antigua & it's authentic spirit. The resort may be older, but I truly felt at home here. We felt like returning ambassadors on a daily basis. Set up the tours with the lovely travel lady on staff. The best taxi tour guide ever, Goldman Richardson, knows Hawksbill personally & ties in the very rich culture of the island to your appreciation for the home (Antigua) of so many that you are fortunate enough to become a part of. If you want brand new digs & party central, this is not the place for you. If you want to truly get away from it all & like a more historic location (ask about the history of the property!), check out Hawksbill. Rustic? Maybe a little, but I love the vibe & I call it real. Comfortable & familiar (despite never having been). We can't wait to go back to this resort.

The Hawksbill by rex resorts team truly appreciates your positive and encouraging review on trip advisor.

We are pleased that you have thoroughly enjoyed your vacation and that is was a memorable experience. As you rightly stated, Hawksbill offers a very simple and tranquil atmosphere complimented by friendly, dedicated staff; various categories of cozy and clean accommodations topped off with a choice of four unique white sand beaches to enjoy. Truly a bit of paradise located in north western side of Antigua.

The majority of our guests being repeaters (highest ratio in Antigua) creates a pleasant inviting homely atmosphere whereby 'first timers' can make friends and become part of the family type atmosphere.

Thank you once again for sharing your experience and we definitely look forward to welcoming you again in the near future.

Sincerely,

If you want watersports, music, crowds, no space to move for sunbeds, japanese restaurants and Dunkin' Donuts this is NOT the place for you. However, if you want a beautiful, peaceful, quiet location with stunning beaches this is your location in Antigua. Upon arrival, having read reviews about "unfriendly staff" we were pleasantly surprised after receiving a warm welcome from reception complete with champagne cocktails. This level of service continued throughout the stay from the porters (Alvin), to the bar staff, Shaun on the beach, the cleaners and the fantastic waitresses.
The rooms are basic but spotless and are perfect for those not wishing to spend their holiday sitting in their room. We had a garden bungalow where we could sit on the veranda listening to the lapping of the waves and the sound of the tree frogs in the evening and we loved to feed the friendly little birds during the day. Many of the garden bungalows have sea views as ours did and the gardens are immaculate - they even rake the beaches in the morning!
There is much more to Antigua than the resort. Make sure you get out and about; either hire a car or take a taxi from directly outside the hotel (we'd recommend the knowledgable, singing Duncan!). Must do's: Shirley Heights - Sunday evening is best, Nelson's Dockyard, St. John's for curry in a street side café, a boat trip and an island tour. Eat black pineapple from a roadside stall! Go to English Harbour /Falmouth Harbour for an evening meal in an authentic Antiguan restaurant.
Loved this place, will definitely be back with friends and family. Thanks Hawksbill for a fantastic stay! Caroline and Christine Radcliffe, London, England aka Rum Punch and Bloody Mary (mother and daughter)

This place continues to enchant despite its annoying lack of some simple things like sufficient working sunbeds on the wonderful Eden beach, 2 days to get beach towels and so on. The ongoing lease dispute as ever limits investment but it is a shame that low cost items like these are not sorted out. This was our 5th visit and it is frustrating to see basic facilities neglected. It would take so little to make it perfect for us.
As ever lovely friendly staff and the best beaches on the island make this a perfect place for us and the quirky nature of the Hawksbill with the lack of phones, TV etc. makes for a relaxing place to slow down to Antiguan pace of life which we love.
Food and drink were excellent although the hotel was quite busy - possibly because of the England / WI Cricket on at the time (another great experience!)
We visited Sandals for interest and were taken aback by the scale of the operation and rows of sunbeds crammed together - more Vegas than Antigua - and were glad to return to the idyllic calm of the Eden beach and peace of Hawksbill.
Still a wonderful place and thanks to the great staff both newcomers and old friends who made us so welcome.

Room Tip: We like the superior garden rooms which have lovely view - no a/c but not a problem on any of our vi...
