If you are into chromium and plastic, like dressing for dinner, enjoy fine food, lavish entertainment, finely decorated plush rooms, starched white linen, crisp fresh towels and the odd butler, then don't bother going to Hawksbill. If on the other hand you like nice people, beautiful beaches, a lovely tropical setting, a sanctuary of peace, an oasis of calm, combined with friendly accommodating service, and you are not bothered about the accoutrements of modern day living then Hawksbill is the place for you. Its a place to relax, go slow - chill out. You won't want to leave!

We visited for 10 days in June and had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday. We did not have the best room (a side Garden Bungalow) but we only used it for sleeping and it was good value. There are drought restrictions at the moment and this resulted in quite frequent and unannounced 'no water' which was inconvenient. The plumbing meant that large volumes of water were lost through running cistern's and if they sorted those out then the tankered water would last much longer. Wi-fi was a bit hit and miss. There were only about a third of the rooms occupied and 50$ for a five hour late check out is just money grabbing... That end's the negative comments.
The complex is beautiful and the beaches and snorkelling excellent. Staff were friendly and genuine. The food and drinks were very good but surely an all inclusive could stretch to include bottled water.....
Before going to Hawksbill make sure you read the label - it is quiet and laid back which suited us and many other returning guests. It may not be for everyone if you are looking for 'action' then look elsewhere.
We hope to return to unwind again in the future.

Room Tip: Front row Garden Bungalows are good value.

The Hawksbill by rex resorts team would like to thank you for sharing your vacationn experience on tripadvisor.

Your comments in regards to: the drought in Antigua, the toilet plumbing, inconsistent WIFI and the late departure charge is duly noted. We will continue to address issues where necessary in order to improve our service product.

We were pleased that you enjoyed our unique location featuring four beaches, our friendly service staff, our food & beverage and our overall tranquil atmosphere. Hawksbill indeed offers a true Caribbean experience which encourages guests to return yearly. Our team is very dedicated and committed to meet and exceed guests expectations.

I was put here by my travel agents after my initial choice hotel was changed last minute. On arrival into the room i was taken back at the old furniture, old layout, no TV, no welcome bottle of water etc, it had very little, but as i was only passing for 48 hours i didn't bother too much.
Well, within one day i had completely changed my mind. What a lovely place, what great beaches, lovely staff, great food, and a very pleasant 45-65 year old british clientel .

I'm seriously considering a proper holiday here, i just ended up so relaxed, no nee for TV, but we did have the world cup on and live cricket so all the comforts if you really need them.

One word of warning though - The guys on the beach looking after the activity stuff were ripping people off and telling them they had to pay for use when it was all inclusive, so be warned about this and hopefully the hotel will read the report and get rid of them.

But do be put off, the 4 beaches are great and the whole back to basics feel of the place was great.

( maybe clean the shower heads a bit guys and put a bottle of water in the rooms, it was hot you know. )

Room Tip: I had a chalet on the beach, so i would pay for oneof these, they are amazing

The Hawksbill by rex resorts team would like to thank you for sharing your review on trip advisor.

We take note of the room furniture and the layout. Hawksbill has a no TV's in any of its room categories as the concept. A TV room is available at the guest services area at Sea Grapes restaurant.

Upon arrival, our receptionist offers cold towels and a choice of champagne, fruit punch or water as a welcome beverage. Water is provided at the bar and dining room outlets, however we do not stock mini refrigerators in room with bottles of water.

We appreciate your kind comments pertaining to our four beaches, service staff and tasty cuisine.

Hawksbill is know for its repeat clientele, actually the highest ratio of repeaters in Antigua.

Our non-motorized water sports and snorkeling are part of the all inclusive package, however if one requires motorized sports (skiiing, jet skiis etc.) or sailing lessonsthere is a charge for such.

Once again, thank you for sharing your vacation experience with us and look forward to seeing you once more in the near future.

Arrived at Resort on Fri 30th May 2014 to be checked into Room 116 adjacent to Beach and Sea. What a wonderful place to stay with excellent meals and exemplary staff to match. Nothing was too much trouble and with four great beaches to use there is no shortage of sun traps to rest and enjoy. A special mention to Sean who looks after boat trips as he was so kind in trying to get us to go on the activities but we wanted to use our time relaxing but maybe next time. You will love this place so enjoy !

Room Tip: Go for rooms around beach for sure

hi we have just come back from a week in hawksbill.we were a family of 3 which included a 11 year old boy.from when we arrived to when we left, we were so suprised by the staff, truly a lovely experience, friendly, helpful, and nothing was to much trouble.the room was great,we had upgraded to the beach front club room, which was only 7 steps from the beach, also had air conditioning, which was lovely.even the noise of the frogs at night only added to making it a truly memorable trip.the snorkling, fishing, jet ski, cocktails, sun and the view kept us all happy..im suprised people moan about the rooms on here as it is what you would expect from a 3 star hotel and your in antigua for goodness sake................why would you want to stay in your room. the food, is again for a 3 star hotel very very good.i have stayed a lots of hotels and this was better than some more of the more expensive hotels.

Room Tip: its worth upgrading to the air con.

I went with my girlfriend in January for 2 weeks and we had a lovely time. It's an old property but kept together pretty well considering it does need modernisation, the rooms were big and comfortable enough. The beaches are what you come here for, they are amazing and largely empty all the time, because of this you don't mind that the hotel is a little tired and let's face it, you're there for the beaches and not for gold taps in the bathroom. Food on the island in general is very average indeed so the hotel food in the main is also like this, but the evening meals do have some nice roasted meats and the breakfasts are cooked in front of you by the lovely ladies who are expert omelette makers. The watch outs are the mosquitoes and sand flies, be prepared to get bitten so bring some heavy duty insect repellent. The staff are very friendly indeed and headed up by the lovely Evelyn who will do all she can to help you in any way.

Overall, the beaches make this place and then you consider the rest and price and it's incredibly good value. We were the youngest couple (in our 30s) there by a long shot but loved the fact that it was complete relaxation feel about the place. If you want some action and adventure, get the Extreme Antigua speedboat trip around the island and see Sting Ray City, worth every penny. If you want 5* European luxury, then you'll need to quadruple your budget and not go here.

Room Tip: Sea view pavillions were the best i thought. If you want more privacy and quiet then the honeymoon c...

As you rightly stated in your review that Hawksbill offers efficient and friendly service staff, a unique location featuring four beaches and cozy clean accommodations dotting the shoreline with the majority of the patios having sea views.

Unfortunately, mosquitoes are common in the Caribbean and can be controlled by the use of citronella candles, repellent and an skin spray known as 'OFF' which keeps them from biting.

Once again thank you for sharing your feedback, it was a pleasure having you with us and we hope to see you again in the near future

In a nutshell, Hawksbill is an unspoilt paradise set in 37 acres with 4 beautiful beaches; the resort has a wonderful, slightly faded colonial charm and is perfect for those is us looking for some peace and quiet, with no crowds or booming music day and night and not 'in your face' must do activities, whether you want to or not! We can personally recommend this 3* resort with the 5* view. Having read some other reviews I felt compelled to write mine! HB is perhaps not for everyone, you need to look at what is does have, not at what it doesn't! If you're looking for absolute perfection and man made for the masses, then suggest you go somewhere else, and pay twice or three times as much, but if you want natural charm and beauty, then HB is just lovely!

My husband and I have recently returned from 12 glorious days in Antigua and we chose to stay at the Hawksbill resort for a variety of reasons .......... Size of resort, peace and quiet and of course cost.
Our overwhelming impression was that it was an extremely tranquil resort, in a natural and unspoilt environment with a faded colonial charm. We certainly didn't want to leave this amazing paradise and we will definitely be returning.
We arrived mid afternoon when it was about 33degs and very humid. We found a friendly cab driver to take us the half an hour drive which cost $20.
On arrival at reception we were greeted with a warm and friendly smile, a glass of champagne and an ice cold flannel..........what more could you want!
As we stood and took in the view from the reception area for the very first time, it was simply breathtakingly beautiful. The Hawksbill Rock is pretty impressive.
Our beach front 'Honeymoon' bungalow was situated about 1/2mile from reception, which sounds a long way, but it isn't at all! We chose this accommodation as we wanted the walk/exercise and because the bungalows have air con! The walk took about 10mins, through the beautifully kept gardens and past the beach front restaurant and pool. There are steps to negotiate so not ideal if you are disabled.
Our large airy room was spotlessly clean, with fresh flowers and towels displayed on our huge bed and the room had plenty of storage and and a safe. There was also tea and coffee making facilities and a small fridge; the bathroom was large and we found plenty of nice toiletries plus a hair drier. We had plenty of hot water , clean towels and bedding throughout our stay. Our bed did not break either!! We weren't woken by gardeners only the waves! We had a good size balcony with a view overlooking Sea Grapes beach and across to the Great House, reception and main restaurant. The view was stunning.
The sea was turquoise and very inviting so we unpacked and went for a wander and a swim. There are four beaches to choose from at HB; there's Eden Beach, which is about a 5 min walk, and stretches for about a mile; we saw barely a soul on it most days. This is the clothing optional beach (the only one on the island). There are sunbeds and a few umbrellas to sit under, along with plenty of coconut trees. The beds and umbrellas could do with a little TLC and the sea does have a few rocks along this section of coastline but we found two safe entry points for getting in and out safely. Fresh water is delivered to the beach each day except Sundays for you to consume, but we did take our own as well. We weren't bothered by anyone on Eden beach other than Oliver who once he realised we weren't interested in his 'round the island' trip, he left us completely alone other than a friendly hello wave! No horse riders to mention of either, only goats!
Honeymoon Cove, a very small beach which has just 5 bungalows overlooking it; the beach has a fabulous view of the HB rock and is a great place to watch the varying sunsets.
Sea Grapes Beach is the main beach but again, not busy whilst we were there. You can just walk straight into the sea here, no rocks to negotiate! This is where you will find the water sports cabin and you can obtain clean beach towels throughout your stay. You can also join the Round the Island catamarans from here if you so wish. We chose not as didn't want to be on a large noisy boat with loads of people and loud music!!! When we return though to HB we will book a private boat so can enjoy the experience the way we want to.
We didn't venture to the final beach but it did look lovely. There is a public car park at the far end so at weekends we heard this beach can be busy.
Breakfast and dinner is served in the main restaurant and there was always plenty of everything. Breakfast consisted of freshly made omelettes of your choice and pancakes, to fresh fruit and yogurts, cereals, toast, muffins, bagels, cakes, sausages and bacon, beans plus various fish or corn fritters, and ample tea, coffee and juice. Remember to cover your food and drinks up if you leave the table as the birds will soon help themselves if not!
The staff were so incredibly friendly and polite, not pushy at all.
Dinner menu varied form buffet style and waitress service and again, always plenty of choice of various meats, fish and vegetarian. Our wine glasses were constantly topped up too!
Lunch - There is a beach front grill where you can have fresh fish, burgers, chicken etc cooked to order plus rice, vegetables and chips (but only at lunch time). Plenty of salads too and always soup! Lunch is served at the beach front restaurant where you need to don a beach dress/shorts/shirts.
The food does not profess to be 5*fine dining, but we found it be good quality and very nicely presented. We had no complaints at all.
Cocktails ......... Plentiful and delicious :-) we tried as many as we could as there wasn't too much alcohol in them!
Pool - somewhat petite but again, not busy and we enjoyed cooling off in there. The sunbeds were new and very comfy.
Entertainment - thankfully, for us this was not in your face all day and all evening booming music must join in activities! We did however enjoy the steel band on the Wednesday evening, and the keyboard player, the fashion show (would have liked more details of where to buy from though) and the Manager's cocktail party on the Monday evenings, we felt it was a nice touch to be invited to. We found guests dressed for the occasion too. We enjoyed hearing all about the resort and would really have liked to have bought a book on the history of HB to show friends and family and as keepsake for ourselves.
We stayed for 11 nights, fully inclusive and we had unknowingly chosen a very quiet period. For us this suited us perfectly but I think the staff would have preferred it to be have been busier. We had perfect weather too, never once needing a wrap/cardi or jacket!
Mosquitos - would recommend a good spray to use early evening onwards.
Dress code - anything you like as long as it keeps you cool! Trousers for men in the evening with shirts, lots of pretty dresses for the ladies and white linen - most people were casual but smart in the evenings. Shorts and t-shirts/beach dresses for breakfast and lunch time.
Tipping - we did tip at the end of our stay and would suggest to the management that perhaps a communal box be placed in reception for guests to leave a tip, should they so wish. This way all the staff would benefit as we felt everyone works hard but we didn't get to see everyone.
I think holidays are what you make of them, and it also depends on your expectations and past experiences too. Our experience of HB was a very good one so it's sad to read other reviews of those who have not enjoyed their stay, but we did our research and have to say, we were not disappointed at all.
We cannot wait to return to this beautiful part of the world in the not too distant future!
Thank you to the whole Team at Hawksbill ......... We very much look forward to seeing you all again!

Room Tip: Do your research .......set your expectations appropriately! If you want 5* star then pay 5* rates...
