“I love it.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 March 2014

I have stayed at Halcyon twice a year for over 7 years. 3 times in the last 12 months. The reason for this is that it feels as though I am visiting family. The staff are amazing. Magretta, Debbie, Aretha, Mario, Errol, Fenton, Dolston, Heleen, Spice, Anne-Marie, the list is endless. The welcome and service are second to none.
Ok, the bathrooms need some tlc but the hotel never claims to be more than 3 star. The position is fantastic.
One of the best beaches on the island. Great entertainment each night. You can also work off those extra holiday pounds in the pool each day with aqua aerobics. But be prepared to laugh more than exercise!
I have read some of the other reviews and quite honestly I don't think people are talking about the same hotel.
This is the Caribbean. Not Las Vegas. The prices reflect this.
I want to chill, enjoy fabulous weather and amazing scenery with the most wonderful people. So this is where I come.
Thank you everyone at Halcyon. See you November 10th!!!

We enjoyed our week at the Halcyon Cove resort. Is it perfect? No. It could use a bit of updating, but overall our experience was very good. I'll start with the few negative aspects.
Our room had a couple of issues. We were on the third floor so had a bit of a climb to get there but that was ok considering the wonderful view we had from our balcony. Unfortunately the roof leaked the first night we were there when it rained during the night. Water leaked into the closet and a few of our clothes got wet. No big deal since as the locals were always telling us, it rarely rains in Antigua! If did rain one other night and it leaked again. Also the deadbolt lock on our door did not function. The door knob lock worked so it wasn't a big deal. We did report both of these conditions but nothing was done about either. We did not push to get another room because we loved the view from where we were. See pictures I posted. Also as other reviewers have mentioned the service in the main restaurant was sometimes slow when the restaurant was busy, but we were never in a hurry so it was no big deal to us. They could have used a few more staff there at busy times though.
Now on to the positives! The food was great, and there was always lots of it and plenty of selection. We only had to line up briefly for omelettes in the morning some times. Also the coffee at breakfast was sometimes very good, and some times not so much. Not sure why that should be, but it was noticeable if you are a coffee drinker. All the meals we had there were quite good, especially at the a al carte Warri pier restaurant. They told us that we were only allowed once per week but we ate there twice by making another reservation directly at the restaurant. Be aware that some items on the menu cost extra. We paid extra to have the Caprese salad, and were not disappointed! It was as good as any we've ever had. Make sure you get a seat overlooking the water so you can watch the fish swim by when the lights come on!
Bar service was pretty good. No trouble getting a drink when we wanted although the beach bar could get busy and you might have to wait a minute or two especially when some people are getting many drinks for their group. Orlando at the lobby bar was especially friendly and fun to be around. He was a fountain of knowledge about the island and also a great bar tender! I was only drinking beer but watched him mix some amazing concoctions for other people at the bar! I highly recommend hanging out there at least once during your visit. He was also our waiter at the Warri pier one night and just as much fun there!
The facilities at the resort were top notch and clean, and the gardens well tended and beautiful. There was some renovations going on (painting etc) at the end of the resort where we were. (We had room 360) but they did not interfere with our enjoyment of the resort, and it did need sprucing up in places so not surprising they were fixing things.
The beach is beautiful although there were some rocks in the water in places, and a bit of a steep drop was you get into the water. Other than that there were no issues. We never had a problem getting a lounger at the beach even though the resort was full. It was quite windy most days we were there, but the water never got very rough and the beach was usable every day. The pool area is beautiful also and under-utilized really. We spent out last day there lounging at the pool which was refreshing and clean.
We met some great people there from all over the world. Mostly from Canada and the UK, but some Americans also. There was a big cricket thing going on there so a lot of interest in that and there is a big TV in the lobby so that was on most of the time.
As for our room, other than the negative things I mentioned, the room was very nice. Bed was comfy and we slept well. As I said before the view from our balcony was exceptional. We watched some beautiful sunsets over Dickenson bay in the evenings, and also cruise ships and cargo ships come and go. We had a coffee maker which we did not use, a fridge that worked fine as well as a safe. The air conditioner was a fairly modern unit that worked well and no trouble keeping the room cool. Bathroom facilities were a bit dated but functional and clean. Hot water was always available although sometimes it took a while to get there! Maid service was good although we did have to phone the front desk for towels at 5 PM one day since they had forgotten to replace them apparently. They did send some down after we phoned. We did a couple of excursions booked with our transat tour rep Marie which I will review separately, and also took a taxi into St John's for shopping one day. Taxi into town is $12 each way for max of 4 people so $6 each for a return trip. Taxi and car rental services are available right at the hotel.
Nightly entertainment was so-so. Karaoke one night was fun and the steel drum band another night was pretty good. We did not attend every night so can't comment on some of the other entertainment.
One thing that was missing at this resort that we have had at other all inclusive resorts is a 24 snack bar. Meal times are set and that's ok but sometimes it's nice to be able to grab something to eat at other times. That's something they might consider adding in future.
Night life seemed to end every night at 11 which was fine with us. We were never kept awake by loud music or loud people so that was good. Of course our room was at one end of the resort so well away from the main lobby area. Having said that, it seemed most of the people at the resort were middle aged, or older with a few families and very few of the "younger" crowd.
All in all we had a really nice holiday at the Halcyon cove and even though it is not as fancy as the Sandals next door we had no trouble relaxing and enjoying ourselves. I would recommend this resort as a base to explore the island, or just relax and get away from the winter weather!

Room Tip: Room 360 has a great view if you don't mind a leaky roof when it rains.

We went to this resort last year, it had won a trip advisor award for service. Our stay was wonderful, so we decided to go again. This hotel is a 3 star so the facilities are older and lack some modern comforts, , again service was so good last time we overlooked these things. Before we left we ask our agent to put in for a late check out, this resort checks you out at 11am and cuts you band off. Since our flight was not until 9pm we thought it would be best to pay to keep the room. We were told no when we checked in and maybe check back. We were rudely checked in and told to hurry up and eat because they wanted to go home. Dinner was not that good as it had been sitting in a steamer for hours. The first thing we noticed was all the new staff, all of them were impatient and rude, even the senior staff was short and rude.
I had to request at the front desk for coffee in the room which is normally provided. Took 2 days to get another pillow.Everywhere we went staff was texting, if you needed something they would put there hand up and say wait. The people giving out towels would point to the towels, not say a word to you. By Wednesday we were so fed up we went to barbuda for 2 days to get a break. When we got back our room hadnt been cleaned in 2 days. Again we complained and it took our tour operator to complain to get it done.
The day before we left I had an alergic reaction to my sunscreen and coulnt go outside. My husban went to get late check out and they said no, he offered to pay full price for one more night. They said they need to keep the room open in case a charter came. My husband went to the manager and got the room until 2pm (our flight was 9) By this point I was thankful, when they check you out at 11 there are no more drink service or food service.
I apologize for my previous review service here is horrible

Room Tip: Dont get poolside very loud or go to a different hotel

We have just returned from a week in this island paradise feeling very relaxed and contented with the whole experience. The beach and reef are absolutely incredible and the staff at Halycon helped to ensure that our first trip to Antigua was a memorable one. Many thanks to Orlando, Dwayne, Janet, Nathan, the entertainers and all the servers and cleaning staff. Cudos to Dale and his team for over-seeing all those delicious meals! Cole and Tapley were very informative and personable as they escorted us around a bit of the island and to Cedar Valley Golf course. Last, but certainly not least, a very special thank you to Ken, "D" and Ashton at Halcyon Watersports . Our excursion to the beautiful Reef and surrounding area was definitely the highlight of our trip. Ashton's knowledge, professionalism, enthusiasm and expertise out on the water was exceptional. We were advised by a departing guest on the first day to book Ashton and his crew and these gentlemen lived up to a high standard. We love Antigua! We will be sure to visit Halycon Cove again! Thank you!

Room Tip: Pool-view room was quieter than Garden View.

The manager was always dotted around making sure everbody was happy and beeing looked after, what a lovely man. Thankyou so much for making us so welcomed. Food was AMAZING and the head cheff greated everyone each night he was a big cuddly chap. The restaurent staff are beautiful Roxanne and Charleen to just name 2. I confused him one night wearing a tropical flowered dress which was all the colours in the rainbow and by golly he came up trumps! The beach bar staff lovely Dolston and Austin to name 2. Little Heleen is a sweetheart. I constantly had a huge smile on my face they made us both so chilled and very happy. Entertainment each eavening is really good different every night. I went for the cricket. I read the reviews and thought "oh my God" what have I done! It was brill. the rooms did need an upgrade, they were tired. But I can honestly say I loved it. Room 202 10 yards from the beautiful beach I didn't care about cold water and how clean the grouting was! The food was lovely, the 2 meals on the pier could not be beat for location. Anyone that moans about this place should shut up pay double and go to sandals. All in all well worth it. Staff lovely and the island beautiful.

Tips:
Keep your empty water bottles from plane
Take insect repellant although I found the bites didn't itch for long
Do go on the round the island catamaran
Buy aloe Vera from the guy on the beach, good for red skin and bites
Don't read reviews from Canadians especially the French ones!

Room Tip: Pay extra for 202

The Halcyon Cove sits on one of the best beaches in Antigua and it is an excellent location.
The weather was perfect and the staff is doing the best they can with what they have to work with . The nightly entertainment was great , the staff in the dining area and bars were all friendly and accommodating. Mario, the Duty Manager was very helpful in resolving issues that I had. Thanks Mario. As previous reviewers have said this property is to say the least ,"dated" . It is in serious need of a makeover. Management needs to attend to some basic issues that won't cost a lot of money[ if they are interested in their guests comfort], starting with supplying each room with Hand Towels, Face Cloths, and a box of tissues. a spare roll of toilet tissue would also be a good idea.
Even a 3 Star hotel should have these items covered.

The Towel Hut at poolside should be open from 9am to 5pm and not just between the hours of 9am to 11 am and 3pm to 5pm.Should you want to leave the beach at 2pm and go somewhere you have to take your wet towel to your room as the towel hut is closed then. The cabanas on the beach all need to have their roofs refinished as they no longer provide enough shade due to the large holes in them . When we were there they were fixing the lights on the walkways and hallways as most of them were not working .They are working on the property but it only seems to be band aid fixes.
While I booked this hotel fully aware that it was a 3 Star property I was not prepared for what I experienced.
